The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. ×In Romans 13:8-10, Paul explains that we owe a debt of love. Paul says that we are in debt and that we pay that debt back through the inward and outward action of love. This paying of the debt of love is the fulfillment of God’s Law. Today, as we look...
Whenever a Christian disobeys the government their conscience is pained. It is this pain of conscience that often leads Christians to compromise in their faith in order to get along with the government. But one of the things we learn from Romans...
Today, we consider Paul's general maxim in Romans 13:1-7 that believers must be subject to the governing authorities. God commands us to respect and to submit to the governing authorities. Yet Christians are not called to a blind obedience to...
What is the relationship of God's authority to that of civil authorities or the local government? In this message, Pastor Tyler Walkden gives a broad overview as begin our study of Romans 13.
What is hypocrisy, and how is that incompatible with love? . . . God calls us not merely to making the correct choices, but to having the correct emotions. There is no room for hypocrisy. The salvation that we seek from God can not merely be a...
Too often our pursuit of joy is rooted in selfish interests. We seek pleasures that will bring us joy quite apart from others. But the Scriptures teach that real joy is found in giving of ourselves for a happiness that can be shared. To this end, God...
In a culture that so often rewards the proud, humility occasionally attracts some surprising attention. In his 2001 bestselling book, "Good to Great", Jim Collins points out that some of the most effective corporate business leaders are...

The wise men come from Babylon to Bethlehem to worship Christ, and in so doing, they defied the governmental authority of Herod for the higher authority and the greater Kingdom of Christ. This is the calling that we face as we celebrate Christmas...
A sermon about the benevolence of God.
C.S. Lewis once observed that there was a time when an ordinary little barn held something within that was bigger than all the world without. As we come to Christmas and mediate on Advent, the first mystery that confronts us is that Jesus is called...
Nobody wants their identity stolen. Each of us have a name and a reputation, and we live from that identity in relationship with others. Or do we? Is it true that we are content to be the people that Jesus is slowly transforming from one degree of...
The Christian is called to think with faith in Romans 12:3. How do we do this, and why are we called to think with our own, individual measure of faith? Follow along as Pastor Josh unpacks Romans 12:3.

No Christian will stand alone, nor will they remain by themselves. The Scriptures reveal that the Holy Spirit leads every follower of Jesus to be joined together with other believers in forming a Christian "body", or church. Why is that?...

"In Christ, we have redemption -through His blood- according to the riches of His grace..." What a powerful picture is presented to us in this single sentence of Scripture. To have such forgiveness before such a holy and pure God requires an...
In Romans 12:2 Paul calls upon Christians to practice discernment in order to do the will of God. While the Bible provides a framework for the method of discernment, we will not find a verse or passage that explicitly instructs us point-by-point...
How can Christians be discerning and avoid evil when Jesus explicitly taught us not to judge others? In part 3 of our series on Discernment, we need to consider this question. In Matthew 7 Jesus taught that we are, "...not to judge others, lest...
