True Sacrifice Come At A Cost
Manage episode 456090926 series 3438363
In 2 Samuel 24:18–25, we encounter a powerful account of King David's response to God's instruction to offer a sacrifice on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. This passage vividly illustrates the principle that true sacrifice is not without cost.
Earlier in the chapter, David's sin of conducting a census, driven by pride and reliance on numbers rather than God, had brought divine judgment upon Israel. A devastating plague broke out as a result. In his mercy, God gave David a way to intercede for the people and stop the plague: build an altar and offer a sacrifice on the threshing floor of Araunah.
This context sets the stage for the key events in verses 18–25, where David demonstrates what it means to give sacrificially to God.
God’s Command and David’s Obedience
Gad, the prophet, instructed David to go to Araunah's threshing floor and build an altar.
Without hesitation, David obeyed, understanding the gravity of the situation and the necessity of aligning himself with God's will.
Araunah’s Generous Offer
Upon learning of David’s mission, Araunah generously offered his threshing floor, oxen, and wood for free. He recognized the king's need and willingly gave what he had to facilitate the sacrifice.
Key Lessons from the Passage
Sacrifice Requires Cost
A sacrifice that costs nothing is no sacrifice at all. David understood that true devotion to God involves personal investment—whether of time, resources, energy, or comfort.
In our own lives, we are called to offer God our best, not just what is convenient or leftover.
Worship Demands Sincerity
David’s insistence on paying for the threshing floor shows that genuine worship is heartfelt and sincere. It is not a superficial gesture but a demonstration of love and reverence for God.
David’s story in 2 Samuel 24:18-25 is a timeless reminder that true sacrifice comes at a cost. It challenges us to examine our own lives and consider whether we are offering God our best or merely what is convenient. In every sacrifice we make, let us remember that God sees, honors, and uses our offerings to accomplish His divine purposes.
Let us, like David, embrace the heart of sacrificial worship, knowing that whatever we give to God, He multiplies for His glory and our good.
