Writer/Director, “The Comic Shop”
This week, Ira spoke with writer/director Jonathan L. Bowen, whose film, “The Comic Shop,” is set for streaming. In this comic episode of “Ira’s Everything Bagel,” Jonathan talks about his new film, shot on location in Las Vegas; why “The Comic Shop” is a slice-of-life love letter to comic fans that general audiences will easily relate to; the focus on his main character; being interested in film since being a teenager; why he chose philosophy instead of filmmaking in college; how a small book showed him how to make sure he stays on his A game; pursuing your passion (even if it’s parttime); why it’s more difficult for a director on a small-budget film than a big-budget one; casting for the film; how he wanted to make it a “Vegas” movie, but without the Strip; the interconnectedness of relationships; and why it’s never too late to pursue your passion.
Jonathan L. Bowen is an award-winning feature film writer-director proudly part of the Director’s Guild of America. His music videos, short films, and feature films have played more than 50 film festivals nationwide. Film has been a life-long passion for Bowen, who ran a critical review site for years and also wrote two non-fiction books on the industry before delving into directing. For 16 years, he has run JLB Media Productions, a leading business-to-business video production company operating nationwide that has produced more than 1,000 videos in 47 states.
