According to the American Academy of Neurology, individuals with sleep apnea have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Understanding sleep apnea is important for diagnosis and treatment. In this episode, Dr. Charles Mok goes deep into the different types of sleep apnea treatments and how technological advancements have made the screening process more accessible and convenient.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by interruptions in breathing during sleep. These interruptions, known as apneas, can occur due to either a blocked airway (obstructive sleep apnea) or a signaling problem from the brain (central sleep apnea).

Traditionally, sleep apnea is diagnosed through a sleep study conducted in a hospital or sleep lab. Recent innovations have allowed at-home sleep tests, such as the WatchPAT device, to make diagnosis easier and more affordable.

Dr. Charles Mok also explains how untreated sleep apnea can cause serious complications in your health, such as cardiovascular disease, neurocognitive decline, and even a decreased lifespan.
