On this episode of the HOPE not hate podcast, Nick sits down with the Editor of Joyzine, Paul Maps, to talk about a forthcoming fundraising campaign that Paul and his team are running to raise money for HOPE not hate.
Joyzine is an independent zine that covers music, film, books, art and theatre, and it has a real activist element directly at its heart.
Next weekend, Joyzine will be celebrating its 20th birthday with a two layer event at The Old Library in New Cross. Across two stages over the Saturday and the Sunday, there will be artists performing from a variety of genres, with the things uniting them being a strong independent spirit and a message of solidarity and unity.
On the episode, Paul takes us back to the origins of Joyzine, what the driving ethos is and the relationship between music and activism, before giving us a full run down of the weekend along with a sneak preview of what is sure to be an incredible 4 part compilation album which will also be raising funds for HNH.
To close out the conversation, Paul gives us some recommendations for some artists to check out.

On Thursday 23rd November, a 49-year-old Irish citizen, originally from Algeria but who had lived in Ireland for 20 years, committed a heinous knife attack on children at a primary school in Parnell Square East in Dublin. Quickly, far-right and anti-migrant activists and agitators turned to social media, spreading a range of misinformation about the attack, including that the perpetrator was an illegal immigrant. Within hours Dublin was ablaze, as rioters set police cars, buses and a tram alight and looted shops, causing over an estimated €10 million of damage. But how did this happen? Is the Irish far-right larger and stronger than previously thought? And how do antifascists and Irish society more broadly respond to such a violent outburst? To discuss this, and events in Dublin in more detail, we welcome the historian and author, Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc, onto the podcast. On Armistice Day, 2000 far right activists and football hooligans descended on London under the guise of "defending" the Cenotaph from pro-Palestine demonstrators. 10 days ago, Britain's hooligan chat groups were filled with the usual discussion of football and beer. But they quickly mobilised as the (now former) Home Secretary Braverman branded pro-Palestine demonstrations as "hate marches", and as the The Daily Mail and Douglas Murray suggested the Cenotaph was under threat. All this coupled with Tommy Robinson's return to X, and his calls for a new anti-Islam far right street movement. The result: chaos on the streets of London, as far right activists and football hooligans battled police and attempted to confront Pro-Palestine demonstrators. HOPE not hate had teams on the ground and embedded within the far right all day, feeding live information about what exactly was going on and where. HOPE not hate's CEO, Nick Lowles, makes an appearance on Radio 43 to give us the full run-through of the precursors to the carnage, how the itself day panned out, and what the backlash has been for those on the march and for Tommy Robinson himself. With over 100 arrests already and presumably many more to come as police trawl through footage, it's looking as though Saturday will go down as another costly moment for Britain's far right. On this episode, Nick and Joe discuss what is a very fast-moving situation. The far-right are mobilising in London this weekend in opposition to a demonstration calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Near the centre of this is Tommy Robinson, who was allowed back onto X (Twitter) on Monday, and who has mentioned repeatedly that he’s wanted to get the English Defence League (EDL) back together. Home Secretary Braverman’s recent comments calling pro-Palestine demonstrations “hate marches” have contributed to firing up an already hostile, and increasingly energised, mass of the former far-right street movement. Along with worrying rumblings from the underground, the literal Nazis in the National Front look set to make their Remembrance Day march to the Cenotaph as usual, whilst somehow avoiding being labelled a “hate march” by our Home Secretary… It’s a muddied picture, but Joe helps us to get to grips with what we should expect to see. Hall has liked posts endorsing Enoch Powell, Islamophobic tropes about Sadiq Khan, supported the myth that the 2020 American election was stolen from Donald Trump and expressed a disdain for the press and democracy. But what ought to happen now? On this episode of Radio 43, Nick and Georgie sit down to discuss the ins and outs of the shocking Susan Hall revelations, what the party needs to do now and how this case sits within the broader context of concerning Conservative Party incidents. The plan has gone ahead despite the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) condemning the boat as a “potential deathtrap” due to serious fire safety concerns. There’s no getting away from the fact that this has become a really unifying focus for the far right this year. HOPE not hate has been monitoring closely, and there’s been over 60 anti-migrant demonstrations that have taken place on town streets and at temporary accommodation around the country in 2023. But where did this all come from? How far is government rhetoric and policy encouraging the far right on the ground? How are local tensions being exploited by far right activists? And to what extend is the media helping to increase divisions? On this episode, Nick is joined by Director of Research Joe Mulhall and Director of Policy Rosie Carter, to pick through the features of a trend of activism that has been a real concern throughout 2023. Hello! It’s been a mere 5 weeks since the last episode, and there’s much to dig into. Joe has managed to tear himself away from his new hobby in British rivers to sit down with Nick for a discussion on the massive split in Patriotic Alternative. The two examine the context, the split itself and its fallout, and try to get to the bottom of some recent claims by other antifascists that the breakaway faction, despite being less than a month old, is now the most dangerous group in the UK. Elsewhere, it’s polling day tomorrow (May 4th) and as usual the far-right is in a dismal state electorally. The pair look at the various parties fielding candidates and work out where the far-right goes next after yet another embarrassing showing. Finally, today HNH researchers have sent a dossier to the authorities showing what we believe to be electoral malfeasance on the part of Britain First’s Paul Golding. Nick and Joe are back a week later than planned because poor old Joe lost his voice. But thankfully it has returned just in time for him to belt out some carols and, more importantly but less seasonally, talk about the far-right on this podcast. It’s a show full of big stories this week as the pair begin by treading familiar podcast terrain: the continued links between Patriotic Alternative and the extreme far-right, in this case the Nordic Resistance Movement - a properly nasty bunch. Next they move onto a big story that came courtesy of HOPE not hate: a fascist in the Tory Party down in Kent. They keep turning up there, though heavens knows why… HOPE not hate torpedoed another nazi Blood & Honour gig, this time up in Bathgate in West Lothian. It was going to be a big one, but it ended the same way as all the others - with lots of dejected nazis and a good chunk of money down the drain too. Finally the pair talk about Kanye “Ye” West’s disturbing appearance on the Alex Jones show and his continued descent into vicious and violent antisemitism, before discussing no-platform and Twitter more broadly. The far-right terror attack in Dover has raised a lot of questions, not just about the far-right politics of the terrorist himself, but of the state of public anti-migrant discourse in Britain. We must talk of about this man’s engagement with far-right figures and his radicalisation, and deal properly with this pipeline. But we must also ask what it says about the party of government that just a few days prior to the attack, the Home Secretary used established far-right rhetoric in speaking about an “invasion of our southern coast”? Elsewhere, there’s yet ANOTHER National Action-linked activist in Patriotic Alternative. How many is that now? The numbers keep adding up. Oh and this one is also a “Reverend” in a white supremacist cult. There will be more sweaty armpits amongst PA activists as the talk of proscription grows… Finally, the pair look at Tommy Robinson’s most extreme article ever, in which he’s openly antisemitic and engages with racist pseudoscience.
