Johnnie's Cash Store in Santa Fe: the Last Family Run Grocer

The City of Santa Fe gave awarded Johnnie Armijo for his work in preserving the past and for living it. As Armijo is busy at work on this important document, he sits in the last family-run grocery store still in operation. Located at 420 Camino Don Miguel, Johnnie’s Cash Store has been in business since 1946 when his father, Orlando Armijo, first opened. Since that time, seven generations of families have traded with the Armijo family. “The viejitos have all died and most of the local families have moved away,” he says. “The area has really changed, but the grandchildren, nephews and nieces from the old neighborhood still stop in to say hello.”
