When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. The most dangerous thing in the woods isn’t rattlesnakes, bears or wild boars. It’s people. Increasingly outdoors lovers are coming into contact with criminal elements and even human predators everywhere from suburban green spaces to our national forests. We shouldn’t enter these areas afraid but we should be aware of potential threats and how to avoid them. When parking in remote areas, always park with the vehicle facing the direction you would need to retreat. If 80s slasher moves taught us anything it’s that trying to back up and leave a dangerous scene, can end badly. Carry a remote transponder that can send a distress signal to rescue units if you get a hurt or need help. Be cautious of strangers approaching YOU for help. If the situation is unclear, offer to go back and call emergency officials. And finally, go with your gut. If you feel uneasy about a location, don't go there. There are plenty of other options out there. The outdoors is a place of peace and tranquility but sometimes the outdoors experience goes dark. Keep these tips in mind and always be aware of your surroundings.…
