We're back for a second series!
This time round, in a packed episode, Vince recalls the grim and disturbing culture of the mid '70s to early-'80s when a maniac stalked the north, dropping bodies and running rings round the police: The Yorkshire Ripper. How prevalent was blatant prejudice towards sex workers? Did the 'Wearside Jack' tape send the investigation down a blind alley? Vince tries to make it all make sense as he works through his chronic anxiety about 'the north'.
We pause for a jolly bit of pop from Chicory Tip, with their baffling and Moog-tastic 1972 UK No 1 hit single 'Son of My Father'. Let's get those weird early '70s glam rock haircuts back in style!
Jeremy looks back at the summer of 1981, which was momentous for several reasons: he was in Chicago (the US city, not the soft rock band); there was a (doomed) Royal Wedding; 'Beefy' Ian Botham, super-charismatic cricket all-rounder, ran away with The Ashes; and there were race riots in several major cities. "This town... is coming like a ghost town..." Now you've got that in your head, haven't you? And believe me, it'll hang around for days.
