Why did Jesus allow his friend Lazarus to get sick and die?

What are we to Believe?
John 11:17-27
- Jesus, I believe you can heal (John 11:21)
- Jesus, I believe you can do anything (John 11:22)
- Jesus, I believe in life after death (John 11:23-24)
Common Beliefs in Jesus’ Day about the Afterlife:
- Pharisees: Souls are immortal. The Good are resurrected, and the Wicked suffer eternal punishment.
- Sadducees: No immortal soul and no afterlife.
- Greek/Roman Influence: Souls are immortal and go to one of three places: The Underworld, Elysium, or Tartarus.
