God’s Word for Today
31 Oct, 2024
27 Whoever diligently seeks good seeks favor,
but evil comes to him who searches for it.
28 Whoever trusts in his riches will fall,
but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.
29 Whoever troubles his own household will inherit the wind,
and the fool will be servant to the wise of heart.
30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,
and whoever captures souls is wise.
31 If the righteous is repaid on earth,
how much more the wicked and the sinner!
- Prov 11:27-31 ESV
TO SEEK GOOD IS TO FIND FAVOR
It has been said that if you seek trouble you can find it. The opposite is equally true. You seek good you find favor. [see Mat 7:7-8] Should we look for good in others or seek ways to enrich their lives, we will most likely receive favor from both God and man. Psalm 84:11 affirms, that says, "No good thing does [the Lord] withhold from those who walk uprightly." Troublemakers can expect nothing but trouble as the natural consequence of their evil attitude and actions. The consequences will be both experiences here in this world and in eternity.
Wicked people primarily trust in their riches. Scripture does not condemn money, itself, but strongly warns against forgetting how fleeting it is. The righteous trusts the Lord. He will flourish like a green leaf. The picture of one who sows good seeds. Later, the leaves and fruits appear to bless him at the end.
In contrast, the wicked is sowing ‘troubles’ in his household. To "trouble" in this instance might mean to be disagreeable or unkind. Wickedness leaves no future to his family as inheriting the wind.[v.29] Their future will be consumed. They will end up serving the wise.
In summary, the righteous is a blessing, giving lives to others.[v.30-31] The Lord Jesus is the clearest example of this principle in action. He came to earth to minister and to give abundant life to all who believe in Him. Jesus "went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him" (Acts 10:38). Today, as Jesus’ disciples, we do experience the same as we share the gospel with others and lead them to Jesus. “So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” [Gal 6:10] ‘For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do.’[Heb 6:10]
