Offshore finfish farming is the mass cultivation of finfish in marine waters, in underwater or floating net pens, pods, and cages. Offshore finfish farms are factory farms that harm public health, the environment, and local communities and economies that rely on the ocean and its resources. Don’t Cage Our Oceans are a coalition of diverse organizations working together to stop the development of offshore finfish farming in the United States through federal law, policies, and coalition building. And, although it is not yet happening, right now the US Administration and Congress are promoting this kind of farming, which would be nothing short of disastrous for the oceans, the planet and the people and animals who live here. dontcageouroceans.org…

About Our Guest
Kurt Fraese has provided consulting services to clients in the Energy, Development, Transportation, Federal Government and Water and Natural Resource markets since beginning his career with Woodward-Clyde Consultants in 1983, serving in their geophysics division and later in their dams and tunnels group. Kurt joined GeoEngineers in 1988, became CEO/President in March of 2007 and retired from the firm in April 2017. His technical expertise is primarily focused on assessment and remediation of hazardous substances in various media. He has served as project manager and/or principal in charge of over 1200 site studies. His business experience includes strategic planning, mergers/acquisitions, market intelligence, client feedback/engagement, ownership/leadership transition, executive coaching, conflict resolution, professional development and peer review.

Fraese and Associates provides business facilitation, advisory, and coaching services for organizations and executives.

About Our Guest Kent Bannister - Kent is the President and CEO of TREK Geotechnical Inc. , a firm located in Winnipeg, Canada. Over the past 15 years, TREK has grown from a 3-person geotechnical engineering firm to a staff of over 65 employees offering geotechnical, water resources, and environmental engineering services along with a full-service materials testing laboratory. In addition to his corporate duties, Kent also acts as the geotechnical design lead or reviewer on a variety of projects including several large multi-million dollar infrastructure projects. Over the past 26 years Kent has worked on projects across Canada’s prairie provinces and northern Canada. He has been employed with TREK since 2012. Kent presently is a member of the board of directors of the GBA and the Canadian Foundation for Geotechnique. He has previously served on the executive committee and the board of directors of the Canadian Geotechnical Society. Discussion Topics: Introduction (00:00) Early Life and Education (00:00:51) Born in Calgary, Alberta, Kent moved frequently during his childhood attending six different schools by grade 10. Moving around a lot taught him to adapt to uncomfortable situations. He enjoyed math and physics in school but admits he didn't have much patience for history and English. Kent's first job was at McDonald's at age 15. He also worked at the Royal Bank of Canada. Career Path (11:55) Kent gained valuable experience through summer internships at AMEC (now WSP). He began his career in consulting, working for KGS Group and AMEC in Winnipeg and Edmonton. He spent time in Fort McMurray, Alberta, working on oil sands tailings ponds. Later, Kent joined Manitoba Hydro, focusing on dam safety and geotechnical support for electrical transmission group. In 2012, Kent joined Trek Geotechnical. Leadership and Challenges (16:50) Kent discusses the challenges of transitioning from a technical role to management. He highlights the significance of understanding and relating to people. As CEO, Kent is focused on strategic planning, geographical expansion, and becoming more forward-looking. Stewart also oversaw the leadership transition to the next generation with the selection and successful turnover of top spots in the organization including CEO, COO, CIO, CPO, CRO, and Chairperson of the Board. Lessons Learned Reliance on traditional subsurface investigation methods aren’t always effective. Novel uses of lesser-known, geophysical methods can effectively guide traditional exploration, leading to confident geotechnical recommendations. In this case, it was clear that incorporating a geophysical component offered significant benefits early on, in the exploration/planning stage. Explore different drilling methods and be strategic with the location of borings. A strategic boring pattern is crucial to preserving the exploration budget, especially when dealing with proposed rectangular footprints. Before starting traditional exploration, consider how effectively you’ll be able to interpret conditions between borings. If this seems challenging, it might be time to consult with a geophysicist. Assess if your site has sensitive terrain, difficult access, or other challenging conditions for wielding or tracking equipment.
