The UAE is hosting the annual summit on climate change even as it looks to expand oil production. National oil companies like Saudi Aramco and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) are growing in power and influence in the region and beyond. Most absurd of all, they're playing a key role in discussions over climate change and the world's "green energy transition." How terrified should we be?

Dr. Adam Hanieh has studied the Gulf Arab oil economies in great detail, documenting their rise and deepening ties to China and other east Asian economies.

This is part three of our series based on the book Dismantling Green Colonialism: Energy and Climate Justice in the Arab Region.

For Arabic speakers, check out episode 32 with book editor Hamza Hamouchene on how the green energy transition is forging a type of modern colonialism, and episode 33 with Manal Shqair on how Arab-Israeli water and energy deals are devastating the Palestinian cause.

You can read Dr. Adam Hanieh's chapter, "A transition to where? The Gulf Arab states and the new 'East-East' axis of world oil," here:

Hanieh is Professor of Political Economy and Global Development at IAIS, University of Exeter, and Joint Chair at the Institute of International and Area Studies (IIAS) at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. His research focuses on the political economy of the Middle East, with a particular emphasis on the six states of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
