Manage episode 449761920 series 3595907
Imagine being born prematurely with atrial septal defect and put into the foster care system and using that early experience in hospitals as career inspiration. That's exactly what Ava Roberts-Stewart, a dynamic nursing student from Samuel Merritt University, did. As she shares her journey from Danville to Oakland, Ava reflects on her formative years at Diablo Valley College, balancing high school and college credits through the College Connect program. Listeners will be inspired by her ability to overcome the challenges of online learning during the pandemic and her deep appreciation for Oakland's vibrant, culturally diverse community.
Stalking, a topic often shrouded in misconceptions, comes into focus as we shed light on its complex realities. By drawing on insights from the Stalking Prevention Resource Awareness Center, we aim to dismantle the stereotypes that often surround stalking and emphasize the importance of vigilance. The SLY framework—Surveillance, Life Invasion, Intimidation, and Interference—serves as a crucial tool for understanding these behaviors. Through thoughtful conversation, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of stalking for potential victims and those providing support, underscoring the need for awareness and professional readiness.
Cyberstalking presents its own terrifying challenges, as shared by a guest whose personal ordeal underscores the need for early intervention and documentation. This episode highlights the often underestimated emotional complexities victims face, such as overcoming misplaced empathy for their harassers, and the vital role of supportive networks. We discuss the necessity of education and advocacy in healthcare settings to better equip professionals in recognizing and addressing these issues. Through candid stories and expert insights, we strive to build a more informed and empathetic community equipped to support those affected by stalking and cyberstalking.
Ava is currently nominated for several awards for her efforts in stalker awareness, including the The Peggy Klinke Award, recognizing efforts to combat stalking as a gender-based violence and The Spirit of SMU Award, recognizing a current student who exemplifies the SMU mission by positively influencing the experience of care in our communities.
