A City Gripped by Fear: Inside the Notorious New Orleans Trunk Killings-Episode 6
Manage episode 401299267 series 3552159
On the night of Oct. 27 or early morning on Oct. 28, 1927, Henry Moity — “drink-crazed and insanely jealous,” according to the Picayune — attacked his wife and sister-in-law armed with a lead club and cane knife.
On the afternoon of Thursday, October 27, 1927, Nettie Compass entered the second-floor apartment at 715 Ursulines Street to do some cleaning. She had barely set foot inside before encountering traces of blood.
Responding officers uncovered the full horror of the murder scene. The victims, both in their mid-20s and both originally from New Iberia, were Theresa and Leonide Moity and were married to the brothers Henry and Joseph Moity.
You’ll find out in a moment how this tragedy got its grisly nickname, and how it inspired a famous New Orleans urban legend.
