‘Desperate Housewives’ Revisited: “Ah, But Underneath” (S1, E2)
Manage episode 460912017 series 87302
Welcome back to the second podcast in Desperate Housewives Revisited, a look back at the Emmy-winning first season of the enormously successful and Emmy-winning ABC dramedy series. This week, we take a look at Episode 2, “Ah, But Underneath.” The episode establishes a routine that the series will follow throughout its run: a few moments are spent with the four housewives together, but it’s mainly dedicated to their individual lives and the men / children / nosy neighbors that torment them. In the episode, Susan (Teri Hatcher) accidentally puts Mike’s (James Denton) beloved dog, Bongo, at risk in a bid to win his affections over Edie (Nicollette Sheridan). Gabrielle (Eva Longoria) discovers her fling is far more serious than she originally thought. Lynette (Felicity Huffman) can’t control her kids in the minivan and takes unusual advice from Mrs. Huber (Christine Estabrook). Bree (Marcia Cross) and Rex (Steven Culp) engage in couples therapy with Bree making an unexpected ally in the process.
We break down “Ah, But Underneath” through the perspective of each main character, chat about the regrettable moments that wouldn’t pass muster today (a running theme through out podcast), and dwell on two questionable / “just plain dumb” plotting choices that plague us still.
If you’ve never seen Desperate Housewives, then now is a great time to start. It’s available to stream on Hulu / Disney+. Catch up with our first podcast here!
