In this podcast with host Trip Durham, Cindy Potter talks about her unexpected evolution from college student-athlete to her current role as Director of Athletics for her NAIA institution, Columbia College. She is the most honored and decorated sports communications professional in NAIA history.
Potter is in her 23rd year at her alma mater, serving in a variety of communications and administrative leadership roles. Formerly the Associate Director of Athletics and Director of Media Relations and Compliance, Potter was promoted to Senior Deputy Director of Athletics in 2020, and then was elevated to the Director of Athletics role.
In June during ceremonies at the CSC UNITE25 national convention, Potter will be enshrined in the CSC Hall of Fame.
Previously, she earned organization's Rising Star Award (College Division) in 2008, the 2020 Warren Berg Award for outstanding communications service and leadership, and received the 2022 Bud Nagle Award for displaying ethics, integrity, compassion and/or bravery under an unusual or stressful personal or professional situations.
There are many “firsts” for Potter in her professional college athletics journey. When appointed to the CSC (then CoSIDA) national board of directors in 2011 to serve a three-year term, she was the first NAIA member to serve in that capacity. In 2018, Cindy was selected to the organization’s officer rotation, and served as President in 2021-22. This made her both the first ever NAIA member to serve as CoSIDA President and the first female not from an NCAA Division I institution to take the role.
Her college athletic journey started as a Cougar softball team standout, where she was a team captain and earned NAIA Scholar Athlete, All-Conference, All-Region and National Tournament All-Tournament Team honors. In the fall of 2012 she was inducted into the Columbia College Athletic Hall of Fame for her softball contributions as a player.
Learn about Cindy’s sports communications roots, her insights on how to distinguish yourself as a college athletics professional, and her leadership in both the NAIA and CSC. This conversation includes:

Stanton emphasized the importance of direct, positive communication during challenges and the value of planning for success, both by teams (your colleagues and you) and by the individual. His blueprint for success includes stressing the significance of adapting to new trends and maintaining high performance, in order to manage up and provide consistent value to colleagues and senior administrators. In his current role at Oregon since June 2017, Stanton is responsible for the communications, marketing, creative services/digital media and broadcasting areas. He also works closely with Oregon Sports Properties, the multimedia rightsholder for Oregon Athletics. Stanton highlighted his experiences at the collegiate, NFL and MLB levels. His work has included time with the Houston Astros and Tennessee Titans in the professional media relations ranks, and collegiately at the University of Tennessee and at the American Football Coaches Association. This conversation with host Trip Durham includes: Lessons learned from planning for success/planning for every eventuality while serving as Houston Astros media relations director, regardless of the team performance, team challenges and team record. How he puts this type of planning into practice today at Oregon. CSC Voices, Beyond the Scoreboard host: Trip Durham, 2D Consulting, LLC Guest: Brad Bankston , Old Dominion Athletic Conference Commissioner In this podcast with host Trip Durham, Brad Bankston talks about his unorthodox start to his athletic communications career. In 1997, at the age of 26, he was named Commissioner of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), becoming the second commissioner in the league’s history. The ODAC is one of the nation’s largest Division III conferences with 15 members. The conference office is located in Forest, Virginia. In 1997, Bankston replaced the only commissioner in ODAC history, Dan Wooldridge. Bankston first met Wooldridge in the summer of 1992, when Bankston, a University of North Carolina graduate, was working a summer job as a painter at Hampden-Sydney College. Knowing Bankston was headed to Virginia Tech the next fall for graduate school, former Hampden-Sydney sports information director Dean Hybl suggested he work part-time for Wooldridge and the Salem-based ODAC. Wooldridge sat down with Bankston for an interview, albeit an informal one, considering the paint caked on Bankston’s arms and face – and offered him the ODAC sports information director position. Three year later, Bankston was named assistant commissioner in 1995 and his elevation into athletic administration started. Learn about his sports communications roots and his advice and insights on the athletic communications profession today.
