"This Kind Comes Out Only by Prayer and Fasting"
Jesus' disciples came to Him after a failed attempt to deliver a little boy from a demon. "Master, why could we not cast it out?" The Lord replied, "because of your unbelief. This kind comes out but by prayer and fasting." What I love most about this passage is that Jesus didn't tell them they didn't have enough authority. He had already sent them out in pairs to cast out demons and heal the sick. Moreover, he had given them His authorization to do this in His name.
The Lord was saying that although they had the authority, they didn't believe they did. So that is where fasting comes in. Jesus said prayer and fasting drive out unbelief. Unbelief blocks us from recognizing and walking in the authority we already have through Christ. Jesus said, "I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy," and "all authority has been given to Me; therefore, go." Our commission to go into all the world is predicated on His authority becoming ours. Our mandate is to do the works that Jesus did. It is part of the great commission. Telling people about Jesus, even getting people saved, isn't enough. We are supposed to heal the sick, cast out demons, raise the dead, and speak in new tongues. The Gospel isn't in word only but in power and demonstration. Jesus' top priority, His sole focus, was destroying the devil's works, including sin, sickness, and even death. The cross was Satan's ultimate defeat. Jesus conquered and disarmed every principality and power by triumphing over them through the cross. Our responsibility is to enforce this victory in all things. We don't have to defeat the devil, but we do have to enforce his defeat by using our authority.
Fasting is the quickest way to remove doubt and unbelief because doubt comes from our flesh. Our flesh wars against our spirit and is in no way our ally in apprehending what Christ purchased for us. When we fast, we subject our flesh to the things of the Spirit. Miracles should be everyday occurrences in the life of every believer, but for most, unbelief stands between them and the demonstration of power in the Holy Spirit. If we honestly don't doubt that we have the same Spirit living in us that raised Jesus from the dead, we would see the power of God manifest more remarkably in our life.
