The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. This mix is a recording from a recent event at the Civic Underground club in Sydney.
It was the gloves off set for Mark Farina who had just done a four hour harbour boat party for Mushroom Jazz earlier that evening.
I was asked if I wanted to do the closing set, and who would I wanted to go b2b with.
Two names immediately came to mind, Ritmiq, a deep and minimal house DJ who I rate highly and iLLya Cooper a well known Sydney legend. In the end I went with iLLya, because of his long standing friendship with Mark, having played alongside him on many previous tours.
A lot of people thought I was brave and a little crazy trying to play b2b with such a skilled DJ, but I wanted to be challenged.
I had iLLya come onto my radio show a couple of days before the event to see how we could sound together. You can check out the show here.
The atmosphere in the club was pretty special, the crowd was very knowledgable and a real mix of ages. Mark got them fired up good and proper and before we knew it, we were up.
iLLya started our set off and played for the first 15 minutes. We then went back and forth for the next hour and a half. As you can hear iLLya drops acappellas and vocal hits all through the mix, scratching and chopping. It was a wild experience but so much fun.
I dropped my latest track "London Nights" and was blown away by the response. Everything seemed to change on the dancefloor, different people were suddenly at the front of the dancefloor in front of me and they were giving it some. It felt amazing seeing people connect and enjoy something you have created.
I really hope to get the chance to play b2b with iLLya again. A longer set would be magic as we were just getting into our stride.
For anyone in Sydney you can catch me at Tatler tomorrow night where I have the whole night to myself!!! Four hour set where I can stretch my legs and play some incredible music from the last 35 years of house.
The following Saturday (21st), I am back at the Civic again for Night Safari. I'll be picking up where I left off.
Finally, on NYE I'll be playing for Boogie at the Ivy Ballroom supporting none other than DJ Spen and Dave Lee (Joey Negro)!
It's been a great year for DJing out for me, fingers crossed that 2025 continues in the same direction.

Finally broke my Soul of Sydney duck. I went to their very first party at Sydney Park maybe 14 years ago with my then two little boys. The youngest who was only two took to it like a duck. He dragged me into the middle of the makeshift dancefloor and started dancing. He didn't want to leave. Fast forward to 2025 and I'm the one behind the decks spinning vinyl classics from 91-94. It was a beautiful sunny day and the vibe reflected it. Smiley happy house heads everywhere you looked. I wasn't sure what I was going to play, but as set time approached Terry playing before me was putting some thickness out of those speakers, so I started with something chunkier to match - Frankie Knuckles 2005 hit - Back In The Day. From there it was back to back classics, not the big obvious ones, you hear them all the time at classics events. No this was the cool stuff that we all loved but it stayed very much underground. The only exception is towards the end when I decided to drop my latest track - Beautiful Persons . It samples Beautiful People which meant it fit nicely alongside tracks more than 30 years older. So many kind words from everyone after the set. Such a wicked crowd, as most older crowds are, knowledgable, friendly, want to have fun, and don't have their phones out all the time - THEY ACTUALLY LIVE IN THE MOMENT!!! Huge thank you to Phil & Sam for having me onboard. Well done to the other DJs, the music was solid from start to finish. And we can't leave out the energies bunny that is Mirrah Reflects 🙌🏾 and all of the Soul Patrol ✊🏾. Finally big shout to the amazing crowd. I wish I could play for you all every week! Here we go with the start of a new month and with it a new mix of fresh new sounds. I actually ran out of new tunes, it was a well discussed topic in the chatroom as to whether I had enough. So I decided to end the mix with two of my own tracks, Can't Play which was my second track made and my latest one, Beautiful Persons. I was also so happy to be able to play a track I melted in 1998 in my attic room in Nottingham. I got excited when Defected bought Strictly Rhythm's back catalogue but The Believers , Heather Wildman - Gotta Keep Holding On wasn't released. Imagine my surprise when it suddenly shows up in Traxsource! Locking in the guest DJ for this month, Tony Garcia of Rotary Disco fame. He produced the excellent remake or Nights Over Egypt - Over Pyramids that appeared in last months mix. One of the nicest guys in the scene, I can't to have him on. Last show of the month and we were lucky two get two guests on the show, em_laa and Jeremy Sylvester. The first show on VBR was a new mix of new(ish) tracks, so that leaves this week for crate digging and boy did we dig! At least three quarters of the mix is vinyl as I didn't switch to digital until 2005 and most of these tracks are much older than that. No preconceptions of what I was gonna play or even the style. We started super chill with Karizma's remix of John Legend's - Ordinary People. By track four we'd gone all the way back to the early 90's and that's where we spend a lot of the first half of the mix. The US garage sound of the early 90's reigns supreme with classic after classic raining down. We then transition across the pond to my homeland for the UK garage equivalent with mid 90's classics on the menu. We'll do it all again next month, but for now I'm gonna call the first month on VBR a roaring success. There's a great energy and real buzz on the station. The chatroom seems to always be busy and everyone is so supportive of each other. Congratulations Andy. No you are not seeing things! If you had told me at any point in the last 30 years that I would get to play b2b with the person that made so much of the music that I played back in 97/98 I’d have maybe peeeeeeed laughing. With over 350 releases under his belt and over 950 DJ gigs around the world there is no doubt Jeremy Sylvester is one of the godfathers of UK garage. Jeremy is a DJ who is capable of covering a vast repertoire of styles, blending them into one sound that has become synonymous and identifiable to him as a DJ. Combining a mix of deep house/garage, classic 90’s style house, deep tech and jacking with a bit of old skool 4×4 garage thrown in for good measure, Jeremy’s diversity and sheer panache is second to none. His cool DJ sets are known for twisting the dance floor into a sexy melange of movement before letting loose into a filthy beat, Jeremy knows what the crowd want, and he knows how to give it to them. What is crazy is that Jeremy's USB's wouldn't load, so he had to use my music!! Any DJs out there can sympathise. The upside though was that I had a folder full of Nice 'n' Ripe and one full of Jeremy's unreleased tracks from over the years! So what you end up with is a rare classic UKG set from the man that produced half of it back in the day. Perfect! Last month we said goodbye to Pressure Radio after almost 13 years (Feb). This month we make our debut on Vocal Booth Radio, a new radio station set up and run by Andy Ward. We've moved from Thursdays fortnightly to Tuesdays weekly. The time remains the same. You'll be wanting the new URL....... www.vocalboothradio.com The chatroom is similar but with new updated emojis which kicked off a few Emoji wars in the chatroom. I didn't know what to expect for my first show, would anyone be there! I needn't have worried as there were great numbers inside the chatroom and on the outside. We also had amazing support from Sydney. For large parts of the show we had more people from Sydney than not from Sydney! I even got to know new people in Sydney, not something you expect on a Spanish radio station! Huge thank you to everyone that tuned in especially those in the chat. This is my last ever radio show on Pressure Radio after almost 13 years! It all began with me wanting to be challenged to mix live, no pre-programming which is what I had been doing with my podcast series. The radio is challenging because there is so much more to stay on top of. You have to maintain a presence in the chatroom, but be careful not to get sucked into conversations or the music suddenly stops!! I reckon there are about 175+ mixes from the show so it has definitely left it's mark. As this door closes so the next one opens and I have to give a massive props to Andy Ward for stepping up to start a new radio station which will provide shelter for all the newly homeless Pressure DJs. I will be making a few changes for the new show. Firstly it's moving to Tuesday at the same time (9-11pm Sydney). Secondly it's going back to weekly just as it was for the first seven years of Pressure. It makes it easier to remember when I'm playing compared to the old fortnightly show. My first show will be on Jan 7th. Huge thank you to Paul & Carol at Pressure for giving me a chance and providing a reliable platform for me to play on over all those years. Biggest thank you is to all the listeners over the years. Especially the Thursday chatroom crew, a mix of Brits and Aussies bound by their love of great quality house music. This show was so much fun. Carrying on the guest mix series, we welcome local Sydney DJ legend Illya Cooper. Illya has been part of Sydney's house music fabric for over 25 years. Known or his jacking, jazzy rhythms but more so his insane technical ability. He's played with the biggest names out there including Basement Jaxx NYE on Bondi Beach to 20,000, Derek Carter and Mark Farina NYE and most recently closing for both Mousse T and Danny Rampling on consecutive weekends for Ministry of Sound. And now he can add the c2eMusic Radio Show to that illustrious list! There were a couple of technical issues that led to no music for a few minutes but that's all been cut from the recording. I also need to apologise for the volume levels with the mic, I need to buy a second mic for interviews. The good news is that we were having so much fun that we played for an extra hour b2b! We then went on to play b2b closing for Mark Farina a couple of nights later. Illya opened and played the first few tracks before I took over. While I was playing Illya jumped on the third CDJ and stated dropping lyrics and chopping things up, it was intense, mental and loads of fun. I look forward to more b2b sessions with Illya for any Sydney promoters reading this. Next week marks my last show on Pressure Radio after almost 13 years. I aim to make it a special show, drawing on music from the last 13 years that showcase the best of the show. All is not lost, I will be moving across to Andy Ward's new Vocal Booth Radio. However I am moving from Thursdays to Tuesdays so that I can go back to a weekly show. It will be at the same time as the current show. There will be a monthly guest slot, continuing on from Illya. I will do a monthly crate dig, as well as a brand new music show like today. The fourth show I'm still considering ideas. One is for me to pick out tracks that have meaning to me and play them along with a little about my connection to that track. This mix is from the last show in August, but since we already have an August release out there it's more of a peak into the upcoming September mix. The beginning of the mix is like the start of the night. A nod to those minimal deep rolling, chugging sounds you hear when you first get to the club. We then have a flurry of vocal tunes thanks to Martin Evans (Brum's finest) who was in the chat room asking for female vocals again (he asks every time, sometimes I listen :)) We then get a little chunky with some solid floor stompers. This is a recording from a show I did recently for SoulfulHouseDJs in the UK. My friend Will Nice has a slot on Sundays and asked me to cover for a couple of weeks. Two became three and this mix is from the third show. The show was at 9pm Sunday night in Sydney where I am, but only 12pm Sunday lunchtime in the UK. As a result the mix stays very much on the soulful, vocal vibe out of respect. There were one or two technical issues during the show as it was a live stream on Mixcloud. I was scrambling about checking things and moving cameras in between mixes. Luckily you can't tell when listening to the mix, although there are more naked beats than I would have liked. Back after six weeks off the airwaves. Internet problems, still ongoing but workable this week. It's actually a pretty chilled mix this month. The mix opens with lush deep vibes courtesy of Jimpster. We build gently with jazzy vibes along the way, the odd sing along here and there. The main part of the mix again has a UK feel, with those bumpy skippy warm beats. I really thought I was going to run out of new music and have to blend towards the end, but it worked out almost perfectly. Happy to report that I am involved in a few nights here in Sydney. Open House is shaping up to be a monthly event at The Barrie, featuring South African sounds, phunky house, latin vibes and UK beats. Larry's Herd is another new night with a focus on 90's deep house and disco sounds. Finally there is Boogie which ended its tenure at the picturesque Ivy Pool Club.
