Linking the Travel Industry is a business travel podcast where we review the top travel industry stories that are posted on LinkedIn by LinkedIn members. We curate the top posts and discuss with them with travel industry veterans in a live session with audience members. You can join the live recording session by visiting BusinessTravel360.com
Your Hosts are Riaan van Schoor, Ann Cederhall and Aash Shravah.
Stories covered on this session include -

  • Two major carriers were in the news for record-breaking profits:
    - Emirates at $5.1 billion, which is a 71% surge.
    - Singapore Airlines at $1.9 billion (SGD2.76 billion)
Both airlines paid staff generous rewards as a result, with EK paying staff a 5 month bonus, and SQ an 8 month one. Steve Hui wrote about both these, you'll find those posts on his profile.
  • The FAA bill on how travellers in the US should be compensated for delays and other airline issues becomes law, but ASTA - American Society of Travel Advisors is very concerned language in the bill that potentially forces travel agencies to pay out refunds.
  • The Lufthansa dream of owning part of ITA is almost certain not to happen unless they make further sacrifices to satisfy the EU Antitrust Authority.
  • David Studden ✈ teased us this week with news of an imminent investment by Qatar Airways into a airline "in the southern part of Africa", with plenty of people guessing which airline that might be.
  • In the end Thomas Otto MRAeS put us out of our misery by confirming it was RwandAir Ltd in which they will take a 49% stake. Interestingly they already own a 60% in the airport at Kigali. It is widely believed this move is to take on the very strong.
  • Turkish Airlines announced an agent NDC portal which will go live in October, after which they will impose GDS surcharges.
