This week we welcome Tim and Janet Scherer, Gold Star parents and the founders of Team Chris. In 2007, Cpl Christopher Scherer was struck by a single sniper bullet while serving his country in Iraq. Faced with the immense grief of losing their son, Tim and Janet were faced with a choice...to mourn him or celebrate his life. They chose to celebrate his life. In honor of their son, Tim and Janet established the “Cpl Christopher G. Scherer Semper Fi Fund”. This fund supports the “Cpl Christopher G. Scherer Scholarship” and the “Cpl Christopher G. Scherer, Leave No Marine Behind Project”. The “Cpl Christopher G. Scherer Scholarship” awards three scholarships each year to Northport High School Seniors; one member of varsity boy’s lacrosse, one member of varsity girl’s lacrosse, and one member of the graduating senior class are eligible for the awards. The “Leave No Marine Behind Project” supports our troops. Money contributed will buy socks, underwear, and any other supplies requested by Chris’ fellow marines of the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion. The "I Did the Grid" four mile race was created to fund these two important ventures, and to also educate the community on the meaning of Memorial Day. As the race grew, Tim realized that many other organizations were all working to help veterans and military families on Long Island. He identified an opportunity to share resource, and knowledge. The Suffolk County Veteran Run Series was born. Starting with six races, the run series has now grown to include nine races from Memorial Day all the way through November. This year will mark the 15th and final year of the "I Did the Grid" in Northport. Tim and Janet talk about how the past 15 years of giving has helped them grieve, and how, even though the "I Did the Grid" is ending, they plan on continuing to serve the military and veteran community. Join us as we honor the life of an American hero, and the family that celebrates his life everyday.
