Summary of Section 2 of Urantia Paper 170.
"The Kingdom Concept in the Old Testament” (Urantia Paper 170)Section 2 of Paper 170 traces the gradual evolution of the kingdom-of-heaven idea among the Hebrew people, from tribal loyalty to a spiritual brotherhood under God. Early Semites viewed Yahweh as a localized war-god who favored Israel above all nations. The kingdom was thus material—a prosperous, dominant Hebrew state. Moses reinforced this with the covenant: obedience to law would bring national greatness, while disobedience invited defeat. Prophets like Samuel and Elijah framed Israel's fortunes as divine reward or punishment, yet the concept remained earthly. The turning point came with the exile. Defeated and scattered, the Jews reinterpreted their scriptures. Isaiah (Second Isaiah) and Jeremiah spiritualized the kingdom: it would be universal, eternal, and ruled by a suffering Servant rather than a military messiah. The post-exilic community, led by Ezra, fused priestly ritual with prophetic hope, producing a hybrid expectation—part theocratic state, part apocalyptic triumph. Daniel's visions added cosmic drama: Michael would overthrow evil empires, and the "Son of Man” would receive everlasting dominion. By Jesus' day, three main views competed: (1) the Zealots' political restoration; (2) the Pharisees' legalistic theocracy; (3) the Essenes' apocalyptic intervention.Throughout, the section stresses that divine sonship—personal relationship with God—was dimly perceived but never central. The prophets glimpsed a spiritual kingdom but clothed it in nationalistic imagery. Jesus would strip away these material trappings, proclaiming the kingdom as the present, inward rule of God in the hearts of individuals who accept divine sonship and practice brotherly love. The Old Testament, therefore, prepared the soil: it taught monotheism, moral responsibility, and messianic hope, yet required Jesus' revelation to transform a national hope into a universal, spiritual family of God.
