When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Please open your copies of God’s word to Jeremiah 15 and I want to begin our lesson by listening to the startling words of Jeremiah 15:1.

Then the LORD said to me, “Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my heart would not turn toward this people. Send them out of my sight, and let them go! (Jeremiah 15:1 ESV)

The Lord proclaims that even if Moses and Samuel were standing before him, he would not be able to turn his heart back toward this people. You are supposed to hear those words and be totally shocked. Moses was one of the great intercessors on behalf of the people. There were many times where God was ready to rightly bring his wrath on the people but Moses intervenes and intercedes for the people. One of the most notable times where we see Moses interceding is in Exodus 32-33 where we see the sin of the golden calf. Moses intercedes with this terrible sin but then continues to intercede when God says that he would no longer go with the people to the promised land…

A Heart For Truth (Jeremiah 23:9-40) 38:25

Our culture has coined a phrase that we consider to be new. People will speak about “my truth.” I expect that you have heard this phrase used before. In fact, we are encouraged to speak “our truth.” You are told that you need to speak “your truth.” The idea is that there is something that can be true for me that is not true for you. But this is not a new idea as much as we might fancy that we have made a breakthrough about truth. The prophet Jeremiah was also dealing with people who were making claims about truth that were contrary to Jeremiah’s truth claims. What God is going to do through the prophet Jeremiah is to help them know how to seek the truth and to build a desire for the truth in the hearts of his people so that they will seek him. Now, before we can move into the text, I want to remind us of the context. The beginning of Jeremiah 23 revealed that God himself would rescue his people by sending the righteous Branch. He will do justice and righteous. He will save his people and he will be called, “The Lord is our Righteousness.” So after talking about God himself will rescue his people, he immediately starts talking about having a heart for truth. The Debt of the Gospel (Romans 1:8-15) 33:35

Listen to what Paul says: “I am a debtor…” (Romans 1:14). We do not want to be debtors. We do not want to have obligations. We try to free ourselves from every debt. But this is a good debt. Paul embraces the fact that he is debtor and it is understand the debt of the gospel that has changed his life purpose. Thankful For the Proclaimed Gospel (Romans 1:8-10) After opening his letter to the Roman Christians by proclaiming a summary message of the gospel, the apostle Paul turns his attention to being thankful. Paul says that he is thankful to God for these Christians because their faith is being proclaimed all over the world. Paul says that he has been praying for these Christians in all his prayers. The Righteous Branch (Jeremiah 23:1-8) 31:34

There are many New Testament scriptures that speak about the glory of God as seen through the amazing work of our Lord Christ Jesus. But we can miss the depth of what those images and teachings are giving because we do not know intimately what the prophets were proclaiming. Often the New Testament assumes we know those prophetic pictures so that we are ready to cry out to our God when we see their fulfillment in Christ. God is giving us these pictures so that we would see the multifaceted work of the Savior. Jeremiah is going to proclaim another name for the Savior so that we would see who he is and what he came into the world to do for his people. The Gospel of God (Romans 1:1-7) 33:26

I want to begin the lesson today by asking an important question. What is the gospel? If someone were to come up to you, could you answer this question? If your neighbor asked you, “What is the gospel?”, what would you tell them? What exactly is the gospel? Now if you have grown up in the pews, you might quickly answer that the gospel is good news. This is what the word “gospel” means. But I want us to think deeper than this. Do not merely provide a definition of the gospel, that is, being good news. What exactly is the good news? What is the good news you have received? What is the good news you proclaim? What is the good news that you put your hope in? What is the good news that you have placed your faith upon? What are the contents of the good news? The book of Romans can seem complicated to the point that we can avoid reading it. But the book of Romans was not written to theologians. The book of Romans was written to everyday people like us. We should understand the gospel and not make the book of Romans so hard that we feel lost by it. The Way of Life or Way of Death (Jeremiah 21-22) 32:13

We are in a section in the prophecy of Jeremiah where we are learning about having a heart for God. In Jeremiah 20 we saw the terrible treatment of God’s prophet. Jeremiah is mocked, scorned, and verbally abused. His close friends seek revenge on Jeremiah because of his teachings. Jeremiah was arrested, beaten, and put in prison for proclaiming God’s coming judgments. Yet in the face of his deep discouragement, Jeremiah has a fire in his bones that compelled him to continue to work as God’s prophet. The word of God was a fire in his bones that he could not shut even if he tried. But for more than a decade, Jeremiah has been preaching to the people only to receive rejection and scorn as their response. In fact, it is possible that at this point Jeremiah had been preaching God’s word to the nation for about 40 years. We are beginning a new series called A Heart For God. We are going to be looking at how to have a heart for God when life is particularly painful while trying to live for God. We would think that doing the right thing would keep us safe. We want to think that if we are following God and doing what he says that this would keep us from having to go through suffering and hardships. We would especially want to think that we would not be persecuted for doing the right thing. Whatever the reason, it is easy to become discouraged when we are trying to what is right but life seems to go so wrong. So how can we deal with our discouragement and what hope do we have as God’s people? How can we have a heart for God when feeling discouraged? Doubting His Protection and Care (Matthew 4:5-7) 33:41

We are looking at how to fight against the temptations that our enemy, the devil, is using to attack our faith. Our enemy wants us to doubt God, doubt God’s love, doubt our relationship with God, and doubt that God cares for us. There are many, many doubts that the devil launches at us so that we will question God, weaken our faith, and ultimately destroy our souls. I want to remind us the promise that God has given to us regarding our temptations. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV) God is faithful. God is with you. There is a way of escape and a means of endurance provided with every temptation. Let’s look at how this promise plays out as the devil is launching his spiritual attack against Jesus in the wilderness. Love Assured (1 John 3:19-24) 42:57

The apostle John is writing to help Christians know if they have eternal life (cf. 1 John 5:13). John does not want anyone to be deceived regarding their relationship with God. He wants us to evaluate our walk so that we can know if we are walking in the light or if we are walking in the darkness. The third chapter of this letter has been set off by calling for everyone to see the love of the Father. See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. (1 John 3:1 ESV) Our walk with God is defined and transformed by the fact that the Father has shown an extraordinary love for us. We are beginning a short series called Filters where we are going to talk about how to look at temptations properly so that we can overcome them. The apostle Paul claimed that there is no temptation that is unique to you. Listen what he taught in 1 Corinthians 10:13. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. The Power of Love (1 John 3:4-10) 40:03

The apostle John has proclaimed a glorious truth for us to hear. “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God, and so we are” (1 John 3:1 ESV). We have been placed into an amazing, undeserved relationship with the Father, being called his children. We noticed in 1 John 3:3 that everyone who has this hope of enjoying the fullness of this relationship when Jesus returns purifies himself. Seeing what kind of the love the Father has for us that we are children of God is the motivation for us to purify our lives. What John is going to express to us now is the power of God’s love to change and purify us. The apostle John wants us to know that we have eternal life (cf. 1 John 5:13). So he is going to describe what the children of God do and do not do with the Father’s love. This will be a difficult lesson but I ask you to stay with the lesson to the end to hear the message that God has for each one of us. The End of the Matter (Ecclesiastes 12:9-14) 37:35

The teacher of Ecclesiastes brings us to the final conclusions regarding his look at life. Remember that this book began with the teacher trying to determine what a person gets for all of his efforts in life. What is the gain? What is the advantage? What is the benefit? Do you get the payoff for all that you put into this world? What we have seen throughout our study of this book is that the answer is no. But his conclusions have not been hopelessness and meaninglessness. Rather, the teacher has shown us that there are some benefits in life and you are to enjoy life as God has given it to you. But if you try to make the pursuits of this earthly world your hope, you will feel empty, depressed, and frustrated because God subjected this world to futility so that it will never give back what you are putting into it. This is an important conclusion that I do want to remind us about at this moment. If you feel empty, depressed, or frustrated by life, you are not doing something wrong. God made life work this way so that we would look to him who is the only source of true joy. As you try to find satisfaction in life, you will only find it in God’s hands. See God’s Love (1 John 3:1-3) 34:34

We are starting a new series this evening in which we are going to examine God’s love and how his love is to change who we are and how we live. Now it is important to remember the purpose that the apostle John has for writing his first letter. John says he writes these things so that our joy may be full (1 John 1:4). John also states at the end of this letter than he is writing these things so that you may know that you have eternal life (1 John 5:13). One of the important ways that we can have complete joy and know that we have eternal life is by knowing the love of God. You might remember that the apostle Paul prayed that God’s people would know the love of Christ that surpasses understanding so that you may be filled with the fullness of God (cf. Ephesians 3:19). Grasping the love of God in Christ is everything for sustaining us for our walking with God in this life.
