Artificial intelligence is evolving at an unprecedented pace—what does that mean for the future of technology, venture capital, business, and even our understanding of ourselves? Award-winning journalist and writer Anil Ananthaswamy joins us for our latest episode to discuss his latest book Why Machines Learn: The Elegant Math Behind Modern AI . Anil helps us explore the journey and many breakthroughs that have propelled machine learning from simple perceptrons to the sophisticated algorithms shaping today’s AI revolution, powering GPT and other models. The discussion aims to demystify some of the underlying mathematical concepts that power modern machine learning, to help everyone grasp this technology impacting our lives–even if your last math class was in high school. Anil walks us through the power of scaling laws, the shift from training to inference optimization, and the debate among AI’s pioneers about the road to AGI—should we be concerned, or are we still missing key pieces of the puzzle? The conversation also delves into AI’s philosophical implications—could understanding how machines learn help us better understand ourselves? And what challenges remain before AI systems can truly operate with agency? If you enjoy this episode, please subscribe and leave us a review on your favorite podcast platform. 1.) What was your journey like to get where you are today? The journey was fun for the most part but challenging at times. We recently opened our second location in Rancho Cucamonga, with the first pharmacy in Yucaipa, so things are going very well now, but as I look back, I’m amazed by the twists and turns in my adventure. I graduated from Loma Linda University School of Pharmacy 2010. Thinking that I really wanted to go into residency to specialize in transplant, I interned at the university medical center throughout pharmacy school. During my internship, I realized that I actually enjoy working more in a social environment, which doesn’t necessary happen in a hospital setting. Up to that point, community practice had not crossed my mind, so I went on to select clinical rotations that I felt focused more on interactions with people. I selected the pharmaceutical Industry rotation with Allergan and Oncology Research at the NIH in particular, because I saw myself interacting with many other healthcare professionals on a regular basis. In the end, I did not go into either of those fields for various reasons. While I like to interact with people, it’s difficult for me to engage when I feel the interaction is tainted. I am not saying there is anything immoral or inappropriate, but if my purpose is to promote a certain product or to push a certain agenda I do not believe in, it’s very difficult for me. Hospice Pharmacy Services Prestige Palliative Care Pharmacy What is palliative care? It is provided to patients with advanced diseases who seek to improve their quality of life and help ease their suffering. Because it is interdisciplinary care, it includes hospice care as one of the specific types of palliative care that is delivered to people who have 6 months or less to live. Palliative care is typically delivered in hospitals but is also available for patients who wish to be treated at home and, less frequently, in outpatient clinics. Who needs palliative care? Patients facing life-limiting disease and their families. The doctor will recommend it at any point in the disease process, regardless of the life expectancy of a patient and the need for other therapies. Life-limiting diseases include but are not limited to Alzheimer's disease, cancer, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, heart disease, kidney disease, lung disease, and many more. What is the goal of palliative care? Like hospice care, it is focused on managing pain, symptoms, and issues on quality of life. The only difference is that anyone diagnosed with a life-limiting illness receives palliative care and not someone who has six months or less to live. As specialized medical care, a palliative care team consists of specially trained doctors, nurses, and other specialists who all work together to ensure your comfort and pain relief. Nurses and other specialists provide an extra layer of support for palliative care doctors. • Help a patient better understand their disease and diagnosis • Help relieve patient symptoms and distress • Help clarify treatment goals and options • Assist with making medical decisions and coordinate with other doctors • Help understand a patient's ability or the lack thereof to cope with their illness and provide the necessary support. With palliative care, your quality of life will be improved despite the presence of a disease. It can help you carry on with your daily life and help you go through medical treatments. Palliative Care and Insurance Plans Like other hospital and medical services, all or part of palliative care is also covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Consult with a social worker or a financial advisor from your palliative care team regarding any cost concerns you might have, including payment options. Medicare Part A Coverage • Receive palliative care in your community • Nursing care • Social work • Spiritual care visits and more Medicare Part B Coverage • Some services and supplies for disease treatment • Some palliative care treatments and medications • Visits from doctors and more Private Insurance Plans Coverage Prestige Palliative Care Pharmacy provides Medication Therapy Management (MTM) for chronic care, hospice care, and long-term care patients. If you're no stranger to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, then you know that it's not just a case of water shortage but a supply of water that can kill. The Flint Michigan lead poisoning is a prime example of what happens when people consume water that contains dangerous levels of lead. What was supposed to be a solution to a water shortage turned out to be a deadly mistake. In a class action lawsuit, the state of Michigan was accused of failing to treat the water with an anti-corrosive agent, resulting in erosion of water mains and service lines that are made of lead. During the water crisis in Flint, Governor Rick Snyder was charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection to 12 people killed during a Legionnaire’s outbreak. While legionnaires disease is not caused by lead, the fact remains that the toxic chemical is dangerous to the body and health. People can die from lead poisoning. But with lead exposure completely preventable, someone's death due to overexposure is truly a waste of good life. Lead causes a lot of health problems. How bad the health effects are will depend on whether you have been exposed in the short-term or long-term. Whichever is the case, exposure to very high levels of lead is bad for your health.
