What is power pop? The Who's Pete Townshend coined the term in a May 1967 interview promoting their latest single "Pictures of Lily". He said: "Power pop is what we play—what the Small Faces used to play, and the kind of pop the Beach Boys played in the days of 'Fun, Fun, Fun' which I preferred." So take one part Moptop Beatles melodies and harmonies, add in the powerful punch of The Who and The Kinks , mix in some great songs about unrequited love and voila, power pop is born. Despite the persistent pattern of great power pop bands being criminally under-loved, this hearty genre has had a long shelf life and still gets love to this day. Brent Stranathan and Jeremy Levy of the great power pop band Near Beer join to help ATTT scratch the surface of this beloved genre.
