In this episode, we delve into the concept of being "qualified" in the workplace, examining who gets labeled as such, who doesn't, and the underlying reasons. We explore "competency checking"—the practice of scrutinizing individuals' abilities—and how it disproportionately affects underrepresented groups, often going unnoticed or unchallenged. Our discussion aims to redefine qualifications in a fair, equitable, and actionable manner. Our guest, Shari Dunn , is an accomplished journalist, former attorney, news anchor, CEO, university professor, and sought-after speaker. She has been recognized as Executive of the Year and a Woman of Influence, with her work appearing in Fortune Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Ad Age, and more. Her new book, Qualified: How Competency Checking and Race Collide at Work , unpacks what it truly means to be deserving and capable—and why systemic barriers, not personal deficits, are often the real problem. Her insights challenge the narratives that hold so many of us back and offer practical solutions for building a more equitable future. Together, we can build workplaces and communities that don’t just reflect the world we live in, but the one we want to create. A world where being qualified is about recognizing the talent and potential that’s been overlooked for far too long. It’s not just about getting a seat at the table—it’s about building an entirely new table, one designed with space for all of us. Which do you hate more? We all have little things that annoy us, but we cannot continue to complain about things we permit, especially if we want to choose happiness over stress. I wanted to share this one again to remind us that we always have a choice. I am so pleased to say that my driving has carried on improving with bigger challenges and longer trips. Thank you all for your support! Have a great weekend.…
What is the difference between being arrogant and being confident? What does it mean to know your worth versus being too proud? Join me in exploring this with reflections from last year I have decided to share again. Feel free to share your thoughts on Afiniki.co.uk
Happy Valentines Day! Whether you are disgusted by the commercialisation of these calendar days, or looking forward to a lovely Valentine's meal out tonight, I just wanted to remind you of a simple way to choose happiness over stress in life and love. Don't be the grumpy one no one likes to be around. Attract good things by smiling and laughing more. "When you find happiness within yourself, you will find it everywhere else".…
I wanted to share this one again, as there has been a lot of intentional change in my life recently. The excerpt below from "The Indispensible Man" helped me to reflect and make some useful career changes for a better family life, as a way of choosing happiness over stress. I hope you find it thought provoking too: " Y ou can splash all you wish when you enter, You may stir up the water galore, But stop and you’ll find that in no time It looks quite the same as before. T he moral of this quaint example Is do just the best that you can, Be proud of yourself but remember, There’s no indispensable man."…
As we come to the end of the first month of 2025, some may have started to feel dejected about their new year's resolutions, while others are feeling good about the progress they have made. The feeling of making progress is good for our mental health. We can choose happiness over stress by setting small achievable goals and targets that will allow us to feel like our lives are moving forward. They can be private, public, short term or long term targets, but please create our own success story this year.…
Everyone wants to feel valuable and respected, but are we willing to earn it? How can it be earned? Whether at home or at work, no matter how old or young we are, there are things we do to earn respect. Respect is also reciprocal - just because people respect us does not mean that we are better than they are. When we appreciate people around us, they also feel valued, respected and safe in their dealings with us.…
Leadership is not always about being the boss or CEO. We can all be leaders wherever we find ourselves. Having the wrong ideas about leadership can lead to so much harm and disappointment. It has been said that "Power without love is wreckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anaemic". Today's podcast is a good opportunity to reflect on how we relate to others in our spheres of influence, at home and at work.…
Thanks again for joining me for this podcast this week. I am sharing a bit more about our pets, and my reflections on parenting versus keeping pets. We can choose happiness over stress in the future by the way that we raise our children. A lot of stress in later life comes from issues with teenage or adult children. We may not be able to control everything they do in future even after we have trained them well, but we can have peace knowing that we gave them the right tools to be independent and responsible adults, if they choose to be.…
Happy new year! I hope you had a lovely Christmas and got to share special moments with people you care about. This week, I am reflecting on my days as a junior doctor and how the lessons from that job can help us with life in general. Having goals and purpose is a big part of choosing happiness over stress. Please feel free to contact me via Afiniki.co.uk to share your thoughts on this one.…
