Love God, love people, and change the world. We believe the life and lessons of Jesus aren’t just good advice, but are Good News for us here and now. As a church, we are all about following Jesus and know there’s no end to that journey—we’re more about becoming than arriving. We are committed to becoming a multi-generational, multi-ethnic, multiplying movement of Christ followers, equipping and empowering our kids and students to not only be the church of tomorrow, but the church of today.
On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. Crystal had the opportunity to interview her favorite podcaster, Dana K. White, host of the podcast "A Slob Comes Clean." Dana just came out with a new book, Jesus Doesn't Care About Your Messy Home , and Crystal had a delightful time talking with her about it! Dana is the creator of the No Mess Decluttering Method and (much to her own surprise) a Decluttering Expert. Dana shares realistic home management strategies and a message of hope for the hopelessly messy in her books: Organizing for the Rest of Us, Decluttering at the Speed of Life (a Wall Street Journal bestseller), and How to Manage Your Home Without Losing Your Mind. Dana teaches her strategies through her blog, podcast, and videos at ASlobComesClean.com and trains coaches in her unique decluttering process at DeclutteringCoaches.com . This topic probably deserves a longer episode treating it, but I really wanted to get some thoughts about feeling homeless from the two primary institutions (family and Church), and especially from feeling so from within the institutions. There are a great number of people who come to Mass and don't feel at home, just as there are a great many who live at an address that doesn't feel all that homely. This isn't to dismiss the tragedy of being physically homeless-- I think I mentioned in the episode that physical homelessness is more visible, and after the fact, remembered that a great many homeless disguise their homelessness by roving from one friend's/family member's house to another-- what I meant was moreso that there is a physical malady there, and it is point-to-able in a way that spiritual homelessness isn't. Anywho, I still recommend the book True Leadership: https://amzn.to/4ju0AmI (and this link actually earns us a commission! When we make invitations, we're making several statements all at once-- that we have something worth offering, that the other might receive, and that they're free to make a choice one way or another. Scripture is shallow enough for a lamb to wade and deep enough for an elephant to bathe, so saith St. Gregory the Great. So for this episode, we'll do a shallow review of salvation history with little vignettes that show some of the depths to be plumbed. There are six main salvation history moments before Christ: Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, and the Babylonian Exile. Listen in for takeaways that still endlessly fascinate Joseph! Christ is king, but not like any other king. His authority comes from a completely different way of conceptualizing power. The constrained vision of authority as a permanent power struggle is something Christ totally side-steps, and that changes how we understand Him, our role in the world, and our role in our homes.
