Have you ever wondered why peace seems so elusive despite your best efforts? The answer might surprise you.
Lesson 307 from A Course in Miracles reveals a profound truth: "Conflicting wishes cannot be my will." This powerful statement challenges our fundamental understanding of who we are and what brings us happiness. When we experience conflict, it's not because we're navigating competing external demands – it's because we're trying to maintain a separate will apart from our true nature.
The lesson teaches that God's will and our will are identical, not through subordination, but through perfect equality of love. "Your will alone can bring me happiness, and only yours exists," the text affirms. Every attempt to establish an independent will results in pain because we're believing in something fundamentally impossible – a self that exists separate from our Source.
What makes this teaching so liberating is recognizing that God's will for us is perfect happiness. When we feel unhappy, it's a clear signal that we're temporarily identifying with a false will. The practice involves noticing these moments of tension and asking, "Am I fighting for a separate will or resting in the one will that never fails?" This simple question provides an immediate pathway back to peace.
Through morning and evening stillness practices, and hourly remembrance throughout the day, we train our minds to recognize the impossible nature of conflict. Our identity and will are inseparable – they are one and the same. By acknowledging this truth, we enter a state "where conflict cannot come, because we join our holy will with God's, in recognition that they are the same."
Ready to experience the freedom that comes from releasing the exhausting effort of maintaining conflicting wishes? Begin today by remembering that your true will is already perfectly aligned with peace.
