We have HUGE news. After well over a decade of campaigning, we’re FINALLY getting Gonski. This is a win for every member who has supported funding campaigns over the years. Whether you came out to meet trucks and trailers carrying the full funding message, travelled to Canberra with us to talk to politicians, sent emails or postcards, joined social media campaigns or lobbied your state or federal MPs, every single one of you shares the credit for a crucial development in revitalising public education in Australia. In this episode hear SSTUWA President Matt Jarman talking about this recent state and federal government funding announcement. Under the new deal, WA public schools will finally be funded to the full 100 per cent of the Schooling Resource Standard recommended in the Gonski education funding review in 2011. Western Teacher Live

In this episode hear from Growth Team officer Chloe Hosking about wellbeing for new educators. Something that you might find handy as a teacher in your first five years of teaching (or at any stage of your career) is getting to know the SSTUWA’s current Agreement and Award, which can be found at sstuwa.org.au Plus - do you know what your graduate entitlements are? Graduate teachers are entitled to: A start up allowance ($1,600 pro-rata at the start of your first and second years of teaching). Eight days additional non-contact time/graduate release time over your first year of teaching (timetabled as additional DOTT or two full release days per term). Eight days of relief funding paid to your school so you can attend your graduate modules. (This is payable to you as PTOIL if you did your modules in the holidays or online.) $150 curriculum materials allowance. Contingency allowance or travel and accommodation costs incurred to attend graduate modules (amount varies based on distance to Perth, starting at $115.91 for metro graduates). And if you are in your first 30 months of teaching, have completed graduate module one and have a contract with the DoE for the duration of the program, you are also eligible for the In-Class Coaching Program. Have you heard of the right to disconnect? Outside of school hours, i.e. on the weekend, during the school holidays or when you have sick leave, you have the right to disconnect. So, unless there’s an emergency you are not required to respond to electronic communications such as phone calls, emails or text messages. (See General Agreement clause 32 for full wording of this entitlement.) This gives you some boundaries to work out when and how you are going to get your work done. Plus know your DOTT time allocations: secondary, kindy and pre-primary teachers are entitled to 320 minutes per week while primary teachers have 270 mins per week. A win from the 2019 Agreement negotiations, from the hard work of you and your fellow members, saw an extra 30 minutes of DOTT time gained for primary teachers. If you’re having issues at your school you can start with talking to your union rep, deputy rep or women’s contact officer or give Member Assist a call for confidential advice. In this episode, we’re talking about the recent Voice to Parliament referendum result and environmental sustainability. Tune into this episode to hear from SSTUWA Vice President Sharmila Nagar on these topics. The Voice to Parliament result was not what we wanted as an outcome but the SSTUWA is proud to have run an authentic and consistent campaign to support it. Conversations we had with our members at the grassroots level, through training, District Councils, forums and State Council were positive and we stood in solidarity with our members and First Nations education committee. Regardless of the outcome will we continue to listen to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Committee to guide us on First Nations educator voice and issues. We will be available to also provide avenues of support to our community as they process the result. Environmental sustainability is another issue of great interest to our members and we want to lead by example by reducing our environmental footprint and taking our environmental, social and corporate governance responsibilities fully. Western Teacher magazine is printed by local company close to our building, reducing transport distance. It is printed using recyclable paper. The plastic that it is wrapped in is fully compostable. We have 6,000 members who have opted into getting the digital version of Western Teacher rather than have it posted. We have an updated app and have done away with plastic member cards, replacing with e-cards. Solar panels are up and running at our West Perth building, with our union vehicles are shifting over to hybrid power. Lots of members are leading the way in terms of sustainability teaching in schools. We will share stories of good examples of practice in schools and TAFEs in Western Teacher. The union has also supported members impacted by natural disasters in recent times. In our current Log of Claims we are looking to make provision for natural disaster leave, which is on top of any other leave entitlements to support school members. Everyone is working hard out there and we encourage all members to seek the support and help that they need. Have a topic you'd like us to chat about?
