We often cite the potential of a project or ambition; new business or fitness plan – telling ourselves and others about the great things we can do with some effort and time. But how often do we catch ourselves telling this story for too long? Or stop telling it with time because we’ve not taken the action to get things going. And this is where the safety of the situation is often unacknowledged. A rocket on the launchpad is relatively safe. We can see the potential – talk of the amazing things we’ll accomplish – and share the design of the craft and direction we’re looking to explore. But ignition brings a whole new set of risks. Inertia works against the mental and spiritual pursuits as much as it does the physical. Building momentum is hard. And risky. Scary even. The first steps are often the hardest! We consume the most fuel at launch, but once we get some movement, inertia can start working for us, too. Acceleration becomes less costly. And now we start to learn. This is when the rewards come. If you’ve slipped on a goal or a promise you’ve made to yourself or someone you care about, don’t let that slip stop you. The problem or change you’ve identified – taken the time to recognize and admit to yourself and maybe others that it’s time to amend – it’s not new. So you missed a day, or repeated the behavior, or acted in a way or responded to something you said you’d stop doing. Okay. That’s behind you now and you’ve got a chance to give it a quick review, be honest with yourself about the nature of the slip, and start again. Conversely, if you’re still on track and achieving that goal for the new year or the month, good for you! Keep it up! Have you taken the time to review the changes that you’re seeing? Journaling in some fashion of tracking it in a way that delivers some satisfaction in the action? If you’ve been eating better and exercising, are you feeling better? Sleeping better?
