Blinkist, My Fitness Pal, Trello, Pocket, reading, productivity and learning with Darren Bandoo, Personal Performance Coach, Photographer, blogger, volunteer board member for the International Special Events Society and Business Development Executive for PRG XL Video. What We Recommended: Tools & Apps MotionX – “I actually use this app called MotionX. It’s a bit of a sleep app. It’s got this wind down where you will put it on and it will sort of play ocean sounds and you can just lie there. It’s a bit like a head space, mindfulness strategy just to stop or to slow down, and that sort of drifts me off. Blinkist – précises of books to read and listen to. “You’re familiar with the app Blinkist as well. I know we’ve talked about that in the past, and sometimes listening to a book where your eyes aren’t active. It’s just you can just close your eyes and just listen to something and let the information settle in, and that sometimes drifts me off as well.” MyFitnessPal – “That’s something I use more. It gave me a good understanding of what I was eating because you can scan barcodes. I’m quite a healthy guy. I’m not overweight or anything, but I had no idea how or what concept a calorie was. Never counted them ever, and I thought, “Okay. Well, I’m trying to put weight on.” I’m in a body building phase. I’m not going to be Arnold Schwarzenegger, but I had to get a grip of good calories, bad calories, and that’s what led me onto the whole nutrition path as well. It gives you a better idea and fact about what is actually happening here.” Lightroom – “I use Lightroom now for my photography Final Cut – “for any editing” Logic Pro – “for audio” Trello – “is my to-do list. I’m very visual, so I find I like moving things from left to right once they get done. It’s great for that. It’s great for just sliding things across without too much effort. Trello I use as a task board, but also the ideas board. I’ve got boards for Aroha in terms of client management and things we’ve done which I share with my business partner. Then I have one for Drgnfly360.” Evernote – “I’m a big fan of Evernote. It’s sort of my brain outside of my head as I’ve heard it referred to once and I refer to it myself. I do all my thinking and capture all my ideas and notes that relate to anything that I’m dealing with in any of my projects. I love the search facility within Evernote and the [filing 00:20:48], so we use that a lot for any content. We draft up contracts, agreements, ideas up, our processes sometimes are even labelled out there. That then gives us a resource because I can share that folder. I’m a premium user so I’ve got a lot more capabilities. Then I share that folder again with my business partner. I even share a folder with my wife which we call our home folder, so all the shopping lists get created in there, and we take snapshots of our bills. It’s a nice one stop shop where you can go search things out and go from there. My top two would be that first one, compartmentalising by having a notebook, then breaking your life into categories that you want to work on, contexts as they’re called. The second is studying. Every time I’m learning something I’ll start a notebook, and for every chapter topic within there I have a note, and the great thing I lucky about Evernote is you can then turn all of those notes into a table of contents at the top. You go into there and it creates these hyperlinks, so you just read through, boom, and then go straight to that notebook. It’s got a lot, a lot of features that I love and use daily. Jo said “When I am in a meeting I love the fact that I can take notes straight into Evernote which means I never have to write them up again, and I can find them again, and I can even create checklists and to-do lists from them without having to use anything else, and just thinking back a long time since I’ve not used it, but to writing handwritten meeting notes and then looking at them day in, day out in my in-tray while I kept telling myself I needed to type them up but never got round to it. I don’t need to anymore.” Pocket – “It’s my favourite reader, and the one thing I love about it is that the articles are available offline, so if you send anything to it say from Feedly, you can actually have a good read offline, underground. We’re always underground on a train or anything like that. It’s all there and you can then forward it to any of the other apps that you want for storage like Evernote. That’s one of my favourites that I’m using at the moment.” Other Resources MacProVideo – “I have access to a website called macProVideo, and that basically gives you tutorials on every bit of software that’s out there in the world. It’s like Lynda.com. You might have heard of that.” Music “I’m a very big fan of Motown, soul, anything all the way up to the high BPMs of the electronic dance music today like jungle and drum and bass, but what I really like is it’s definitely got to be the Motown. I’ve got a record collection. I don’t know. People don’t use those anymore, but I’ve got a vast, a vast record collection sitting right behind me, and I like to pull them out and just dust off anything from Earth, Wind, and Fire . Don’t laugh. Films “I love a good movie. I like my horrors. I like edgy things like some of Guy Ritchie’s films or Quentin Tarantino. I like the edgy. [inaudible 00:30:11] with people that take the intros very seriously with the artwork and that really … That’s my creative edge.” Tips “I’m a big fan of lemon tea in the mornings to sort of kick start my digestive system before I eat.” “Getting up that early sort of gives me that time to look at my day, see what I’ve got to do, and then get mentally prepared for it” “I like to just stick with one topic so that I will make a lot of progress in one evening, whether I’m writing articles for the blog or touching photos up and doing the albums. I like to do a bulk load of work and then I’m happy with where that project is, and I find that I move a lot faster that way rather than spending an hour then shifting topics.” “As you can imagine task management is crucial here, and I like to organise my days so the middle of the week, so Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday I call project nights, so Monday and Friday is just relax, get into the week and spend some time with my wife in the evenings. Tuesday through to Thursday are project nights, so I pick a day to focus on each of those projects just so that I know I’ve got that time to do that. It keeps me on top of everything.” “One of my early revelations was I just want to be happy, and it’s not a destination, it’s the journey, so one day I just started thinking about, “Okay. Well … ” I was in a bad place and a bit of a turbulent childhood. I thought, “This is it. I’m just going to be happy.” The next morning, woke up. Made myself the best cup of tea. It just starts from the simple things. You know?” “Healthy mind, healthy body, and if you’re not making time for health, you’re making time for sickness. Isn’t that right?” “On the whole sort of nutrition tip I steer away from white rice, white pasta, white breads. I’ve learned a bit more about gluten free and I’m trying to incorporate that in terms of prevention of later degenerative effects.” “It’s about like having a 360 look at your world, your situation, and quantifying how satisfied you are with various areas, whether it’s health, work, your hobbies, your relationships, et cetera. I actually have a quantified system where it gives you a number at the end of it and then you can work on your lowest satisfaction rating. I urge your readers have a look at it. It’s on my website and any questions I can always answer them. I’m more than happy to do that.” “To relax. The reading does take me down. I like to surf around on the net a lot in terms of travel. My wife and I we just recently qualified as scuba divers, so I’m constantly on the net trying to find good locations to dive. I’m definitely a warm water fan though. I can’t stand the cold water.” “Because of obviously the progresses that I’ve made now from my early days of being a milk runner. It was my first ever job was running milk to people’s doors and collecting the tokens. When things don’t go right for me I always just think of the progress that I’ve made, and progress. I remind people if they’re in the same position about the progresses they’ve made, and things could always be worse, Jo. They can always be worse.” “The trick is how you take it on board, what you learn from it, and how then are you going to turn this into a success. Again, everything is always a work in progress, but without your failures you don’t learn the greatest lessons, and winning isn’t as good if you don’t fail.” To Contact Darren “First step if you haven’t, check out my website, Drgnfly360 . That’s dragon without the vowels, so just D-R-G-N-F-L-Y 360.com, and interact with me through there. We’ve got a comments page. My email is also Darren@Drgnfly360.com . Page to View Diary, ValueAddon, Living your Dream and a Whiteboard with Roy Carter of IM Income Builders Club. What We Recommended: Tools & Apps Page a Day Diary – “I’ve been in corporate life and all the rest of it, in the long, distance past now, but I’ve never really found a better way of organising myself than the good old-fashioned page-a-day diary that I use. What I’ll usually do is I’ll have like three main, what I call PFA tasks, so I call them prime focus activity tasks, that I want to get done as a priority each day. They’re prime focus activities because they bring money in, so they get done first. As long as I get those, usually three main PFA tasks done in a day, I’m happy. Whiteboard – “I’ve got a whiteboard in front of me as I speak now, I’m looking at that on the wall. I know at any given time what the income is for the month, the number of members this month compared to last month of my main IM Income Builders Club. I have other membership programmes as well. It’s all in front of me at a glance.“ AWeber and GetResponse “I use them to send out emails, and broadcast emails, and sequential emails that go out with lessons for my membership programmes, things like that. I rely heavily on that, and that’s magic. I just think they’re a major part of my business, the autoresponders.” ValueAddOn – “The membership tool that I’ve just starting using, which I run my main membership programme IM Income Builders Club from. It’s all run from this one tool, which is an online. It’s so simple and easy to use. Intuitive to use right from the get go, which is good for me because I’m a complete technophobe. It does everything I want it do. I have video lessons in there for my members, because most of my training’s done by videos, step-by-step videos. All the videos are hosted in there by them too, so I don’t have worry about hosting. It’s a brilliant tool if you want to run your own membership programme. It’s really way too inexpensive for what it does. I think it’s about $37 a month or something ridiculous like that. It’s quite incredible. I mean, it does everything I need it to do, and it’s making me an awful lot of money in terms of my membership programme.” Dropbox – “Then I’d have to say probably Dropbox where I can save everything, you know, all my work and files. I access that anywhere I happen to be in the world.” Books “Well, obviously everyone obviously has to read a book called, ‘ Can A Beer Mat Change Your Life? ’ Yeah, that’s a great book, it’s called, ‘Can A Beer Mat Change Your Life?’ It’s a really good book. It’s available on Amazon. It’s by a really clever and a very hugely handsome guy called Roy Carter!!” “I tend to like books by entrepreneurs who kind of think outside the square a bit. One of the very first books that I remember reading when I was younger, of that type, of somebody who really thinks outside the square, was a book called, ‘ The Lazy Man’s Way To Riches ’. It’s by a guy called, Joe Karbo. Obviously the title is ‘The Lazy Man’s Way to Riches’ or whatever, but it’s much more than that. He tells how, during the Great Depression in America, he made a lot of money in a lot of quite ingenious ways. Even during that Great Depression time, when everyone was suffering.” “As for probably the best book I’ve ever read, fairly recently actually, probably only a few months ago, it was recommended to me by my mentor, and the book is called, ‘ Straightline Leadership ’. and it’s by a guy called Dusan Djukich and it honestly is superb. I read it in one sitting, I couldn’t actually put it down. It was an absolute epiphany to me. I actually now recommend every consulting client that comes on with me, I recommend that they read that book, because it’s such an eye opener. Yeah, without a doubt, it’s the best book I’ve ever read. It’s not just about leadership. If you think about leadership, it’s also about leading yourself rather than leading others, or as well as leading others. It simplifies things down when you really look at it, because it gets yourself to ask yourself questions about your own business. For example, you know, it’s so simple, like he does a 4 step thing where he says, “Okay looking at your business, so what you’re really looking at is what’s working. What’s not working. What’s missing and what’s next.” You know, that’s just a simple example of how he breaks things down in one respect. Then he’ll say things like, “Okay a decision about this particular activity – do you do it, do you drop it or do you delegate it?” When you look at the book, I’m going to read it again and again, because it was just a bit of an epiphany for me. I’m big on simplifying things for other people, and trying to make things easy for my consulting clients and members, and everything else like that. I like to keep things simple. This book, when you read it, Straightline Leadership, it just opened my eyes, to think about things in a different way. I would recommend anyone who runs their own business or feels that they’re an entrepreneur in any way, get that book and read it, because I think you’ll be glad you did.” Music “I’ve got a really varied taste in music. I like people like Jason Mraz , pretty much anything by Jason Mraz. He’s great. “Diana Krall, I don’t know if you’re familiar with Diana Krall ? She’s amazing. I just love her stuff. It’s so smoky and jazzy and relaxed. She’s really great.” Films “ The Shawshank Redemption would probably be one of my favourites. You know, that’s ages old now, but a classic I think.” “I’m a bit of a romantic so, Clint Eastwood did one called, ‘ The Bridges of Madison County ’, which is a real great, sort of weepy thing, you know, showing my romantic side.” Tips Planning the Day Before – “Before I stop work, or in the afternoon or whenever it is, I’ll actually note down in the diary the things that I want to get done the following day. It’s classic time management stuff really. You don’t wake up in the morning and think, “Okay well what am I going to do today?” and waste the first hour wondering what you’re going to do, it’s already there and laid out for you.” Three Monthly Planning – “I don’t look much more than about three months ahead because I think a lot can happen in three months and things can change a lot, you know. I’ll say, “Okay, this is where I want to be in three months’ time. This is where I want to be in a month’s time.” Generally, what I tend to do is I’m working month to month, so I know what I want to achieve this month Fishing to Relax – “I find that when I’m fishing I can just empty my head of anything really. Everything else just goes and I’m completely sort of in the moment and at peace when I’m fishing.” Learning and Personal Development – “I spend a lot of money on different programmes just to keep abreast of what people are doing in the marketing online industry. I spend a lot of money on that just keep myself up with most things, but really, I’ll usually be working with a mentor. Very expensive in one sense, I mean, I’ve worked with a couple of mentors, two or three mentors, and they’re extremely good and at the top of their profession at what they do. It’s not cheap, it’s very expensive in one sense to be with them and learn from them, but unbelievably inexpensive really, when you look at what you learn and how you that can contribute vastly to your bottom line and your profits. From my mentors alone, I know that I’ve learnt a lot from my mentors. I’ve very nearly been about to make a major maybe and they’ve said, “Whoa, whoa, whoa, don’t do that. Do it this way”. Just that one like thirty-minute conversation has changed the entire bottom line for me over the next God knows how many months.” When Things Go Wrong – “I think the older you get, you put things in perspective a little bit better. For me, now when things don’t go right, and that happens you know, the fact is, I always think, well tomorrow’s another day. Life is always full of highs and lows really, as we know, as everyone knows. Sometimes, if it isn’t going right, I’ll usually step completely away from it, and I’ll just go for a walk or I’ll take myself off fishing, take the day off. Sometimes I’ll just say to Lin, “Do you know what? Blow this, let’s go get some lunch somewhere and forget the day.” That’s what we’ll do. Then what I’ll then is, I’ll come back to the problem with a completely fresh mind. That’s the way I handle it.” Dealing with Problems – One piece of advice I have given to my mentoring clients and consulting clients is, when you’ve got a problem, it doesn’t matter whether it’s health or financial worries or someone you love or care for, whatever it is, the one thing I will say is, that you will always, always start to feel better about things the minute that you start to take action, some form of action and doing something about the problem. The moment you start doing something to actually take action and resolve the problem, however little that action might be, you’re doing something.” Living your Dreams – “A client said to me recently, “Oh I’d love to live on an island.” I said, “Look, it’s not as difficult to live on a tropical island as you think it is. What you have to do is, just decide that that’s what you’re going to do and go ahead and make it happen”. It’s not as difficult as people think. Helping Clients – “I call it, shining the light on their pathway to success, kind of thing. What you are, is you’re really just a cog in the wheel that shows them the right way really.” To Contact Roy “I write a monthly newsletter, which is a subscription newsletter. The newsletter is called, ‘Letters from A Small Island’. It’s a monthly newsletter that gets delivered to your inbox in pdf format. If you go to https://www.lettersfromasmallisland.com . People seem to like it. I enjoy writing it every month. It sort of keeps people in touch with what I’m doing. Paul and Emily Hughes have both made the leap from public sector teaching into entrepreneurship and now run the Parent Guide to GCSE , a website where they support parents whose children are in Year 11 and are preparing to take their first set of important exams. They met in 2003 as trainee teachers assigned to the same school after completing their Master’s studies in Information Management and Computing, and Maths and Education, respectively. They enjoy working from separate rooms at home and relish the freedom that their business has given them. Emily also runs a Pop Choir in her spare time and loves the opportunity that it gives her to connect with other like-minded people. Paul and Emily join me today to discuss their membership website for parents who want to help their children prepare successfully for their GCSE exams and how they were inspired by a parent chat on WhatsApp to start their business. Emily discusses her love of reading and researching and how she used this ‘superpower’ to plan the website that shares their professional knowledge with parents who are struggling to understand how to help their children get exam-ready in a way that also supports their mental health. Paul and Emily also dive into how they manage their days now that they are working on their own business and no longer have the day timetabled by the school bell, and why they make time for prioritising their family with regular ‘Fri-dates.’ “A lot of the stress of exams is caused by not feeling in control.” Emily Hughes This Week on The Power to Live More Podcast: Why Paul and Emily began to feel that teaching was no longer a long-term option for them Other business ventures that paved the way for The Parent Guide to GCSE website The similarities and differences between education and entrepreneurship How Paul and Emily plan and organise their tasks to work together successfully How they brainstorm the future of their business and the areas in which they plan to expand their concept Hints and tips on how to talk about exams and revision with your teenage children Why it’s vital to support mental health and promote wellness strategies The importance of prioritising Why they outsource some of their business tasks to a VA How they deal with situations that don’t go their way and challenging days What their day looks like when they’re ‘living more,’ and how they prioritise family-time Resources Mentioned: Oversubscribed: How to Get People Lining Up to Do Business with You by Daniel Priestley Copywriting for Creatives Course Free to Focus by Michael Hyatt The 1% Club with John Lamerton Big Ideas for Small Businesses by John Lamerton My World Domination Plans by John Lamerton Connect with Paul and Emily Hughes: The Parent Guide to GCSEs The Parent’s Guide to GCSEs on Facebook The Parent’s Guide to GCSEs on Twitter Emily Hughes on LinkedIn Paul Hughes on LinkedIn NEW BOOK GCSE Survival Guide for Parents Join the POWER to Live More CALM Membership Attention home-based coaches and consultants! Dr. Allen Lycka was a leading cosmetic doctor for over 40 years, pioneering many modern cosmetic procedures that have become so routine today. His passion for his practice was apparent in the holistic approach he took to his patients and the many accolades he received throughout his career. In 2003, everything changed when he began experiencing drop foot. After numerous doctors and tests, he was diagnosed with ALS and told to get his affairs in order. Dr. Lycka, however, was not convinced. With his health declining, he continued to run his practice while trying to find answers for his mysterious ailment. He finally found a doctor who was able to confirm his suspicion – that he had been misdiagnosed. He is currently being treated for long-term Lyme disease and has turned his experience into a way to give back. He has written several books and now spends his time as a transformational speaker and coach. Today, Dr. Lycka shares his experience of going through the five stages of grief after his ALS misdiagnosis. We discuss the transformative power of choosing happiness and how living enthusiastically can impact your place in the world. He shares his experience as a top cosmetic surgeon and why he felt that his role went beyond changing his patients’ aesthetics. He offers some advice for allowing our grief to become gratitude and why it can be a powerful blessing. He also shares some of the “Golden Pearls” that he writes about in his book, The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life . “It’s not what happens to you. It’s what you do with what happens.” Dr. Allen Lycka This week on The Power to Live More Podcast: How his illness changed his perspective and inspired him to give back The “Golden Pearls” that help us survive personal traumas and setbacks Why 2020 can be seen as a blessing if we choose to prioritise our non-negotiables Why moving from his role as a top cosmetic surgeon to an inspirational speaker and author felt like a natural transition The importance of consciously creating gratitude for the things and people who are important to you How being a cosmetic doctor was about more than changing physical appearances The power of choosing happiness and paying it forward every day How he transformed his grief into joy and thankfulness Resources Mentioned: On Grief and Grieving by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz Connect with Dr. Allen Lycka: Dr. Allen Lycka Website Book: The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life Dr. Allen Lycka on LinkedIn Dr. Allen Lycka on Instagram Dr. Allen Lycka on Facebook Dr. Allen Lycka on Twitter Dr. Allen Lycka on YouTube Join the POWER to Live More CALM Membership Attention home-based coaches and consultants! Do you ever feel overwhelmed when you open your email inbox? Whether it’s your personal email or business account, it can be easy to begin feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of email you receive every single day! Email has helped businesses grow much faster today than in the pre-internet days. It has helped keep people connected – for work and play – in a much easier way. It has even helped improve productivity for businesses, but if you’re not managing your email properly, it can quickly begin to feel more like a ‘time-suck’ than a productivity and communications tool. Today, I want to share with you some of the tips, strategies, and tools that I use every day to help me manage my email and get more done so I can live more. “I have always worked on the ‘inbox zero’ philosophy.” Inbox Zero Strategy to Help You Live More: Consolidate all your emails into one. Use rules, filters, folders, and labels. Read and respond to emails that require your immediate response. Sort the rest. Check email at specific times of the day. Be free with the delete key and forward reference materials to an external programme (like Evernote!) Create templates for frequently asked questions – or create a FAQs page on your website. Keep your responses short and sweet.
