Let’s examine some of the themes that we discover in the Mass readings for the 16th Week of the Year. 1st Reading – Genesis 18:1-10a Abraham and Sarah provide hospitality to three travelers. One of the men makes a prophecy that Sarah will have a son in the following year. Psalm – 15:2-5 “He who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.” Our love for the Lord is made known when our thoughts, words, and actions are pure. 2nd Reading – Colossians 1:24-28 Our sufferings participate in the afflictions of Christ through our connection to him. We make known what God has done in Christ through our words and example. Gospel – Luke 10:38-42 Martha implores Jesus to make her sister, Mary, help her with the serving. Jesus chides Martha, saying that Mary has chosen the better part by taking the time to listen to his words.
