When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Homophobia in the Caribbean is still a very real thing despite the many advances we have experienced in the United States in recent years. Yet as recent as two weeks ago, at the Sonesta Beach Ocean Point resort in St. Maarten, Mike and his partner Eric experienced discrimination and homophobia, the result of interacting with other gay guests staying on the property while poolside. Accused of sneaking in others using non-existent video footage as proof, Mike and Eric had to defend themselves in the lobby of the Sonesta Resort to the dismay of others, while facing an additional $800+ in charges. Sadly, this isn't the first time Mike and Eric have experienced homophobic discrimination in the Caribbean, and during this episode, gay travelers are encouraged to research their Caribbean destinations prior to booking. Mike discusses this ongoing concern with 20 cruises under his belt as avid oceanic traveler.
