Symptomatic: A Medical Mystery Podcast

Ian Stedman suffered 32 years with full body rashes, debilitating headaches, joint pain and hearing loss without a clear diagnosis. His Mother Barb had gone over 60 years with the same symptoms. After hundreds of doctors visits and decades of frustration - they had resigned to believe there were no answers. That is until Ian’s daughter, Lia was born covered in that all-too-recognizable rash. Ian re-ignited his search for answers in an effort to save his family. We want to hear from you! Balanced Mind with Julie Potiker
Julie Potiker leads you through this meditation centering on peace. She completes the meditation with the poem, "Staying True", by James Crews. This version ends with music allowing you to drift off into sleep. Staying True Though they've begun to shrink and shrivel, the echinaceas I saved from the killing frost last night still send out their honeyed scent, filling the whole room. And I think: Let me be that stubborn, that reckless with whatever time I have left, staying so true to myself, I keep trying to make this world a kinder, more beautiful place right up to my final breath. —James Crews Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . Breath in compassion for yourself, for others, and the world around you through this guided meditation led by Julie Potiker. She completes the mediation with the poem, "How to Stitch Together the World", by Marjorie Moorehead. This version ends with music allowing you to drift off into sleep. How To Stitch Together The World by Marjorie Moorehead, from her book, "Into the Thrum" When there are so many tears, what is my needle and thread? Maybe each word written down on the page is a stitch to fix a rip, or to salvage the covering whose material has worn thin, the cold now seeping in. Maybe words, laid down with care, perform a kind of repair, and, when shared, are joined with others' handiwork, our small mendings become stronger with the merging. Our words not a cure, but a healing, allowing for possibility of health, wholeness, harmony. Maybe well-stitched words can be a song. Is there anything more beautiful than the making of harmony? No matter carrying sadness, or joy, it is the carrying that makes us strong. -Marjorie Moorehead Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . Breathe goodness in - and out - through this guided meditation led by Julie Potiker. She completes the meditation with the poem, "Into the Thrum", by Marjorie Moorhead. This version ends with music allowing you to drift off into sleep. Into the Thrum, by Marjorie Moorehead Finally, the forsythia is at full throttle froth. Yellow petals spangling in large group celebration. Nearby, magnolia too, has decided to pop. It's time to show up, and each tree is a handful of confetti-in-the-air. The crocuses have teased forth daffodils to join them and tulip greens are hinting at days of color to come, when they'll bloom in pinks and purples and bring the hyacinths along to prance in parade. Why not? The sun i strong, and after burning through morning fog, is out for serious business all afternoon. Sunsets will be highlighted in cloud forms, docking like ships in the waning light, making them blush and glow, putting on quite a show, yet prelude for the exhibition of moon, and stars. Birds know. The geese have come back, squawking, joining cardinals, robins, and crows. With each venture out, I've captured spring-tilled soil in my soles. Sit in stillness, in silence, as Julie Potiker leads you through this guided meditation She completes the meditation with the poem, "Hope Waits Its Turn", by Shawn Avenigo Sanders. This version ends with music allowing you to drift off into sleep. Like the number I pulled out from the take-your-turn dispenser at the DMV, Hope sits inside my pocket. It takes a seat in the green plastic chair, understanding there are other emotions ahead of it, each with their own urgency. Anxiety likes to hover near the counter, staring at the red flickering number on the wall, while Logic pretends to be in control, recalculating time as the now serving number grows. But Hope watches as integers glows, notices how light shifts, ever so slightly, through each changing digit, and how zero radiates out from its inner hole. The way Hope shows up when we open to each other, asking, How can I help you today? -Hope Waits Its Turn, by Shawn Avenigo Sanders from her book of poems, "Pockets". Quiet the thoughts in your mind through this guided meditation led by Julie Potiker. She completes the meditation with her poem, "Perseid Star Party". This version ends with music allowing you to drift off into sleep. Perseid Star Party, Julian, California, by Julie Potiker Am I in your way? No, it’s straight up in the sky, she said. But my spirit is huge, I say. No worries, the jacketed person replied, folded into her black canvas camping chair, I can see right through it. How did she know my spirit is translucent? Tower of Babel. I hear chips of Chinese, Spanish, English seeking the divine throughout space and time. Incredible telescopes - all different - hooked up to gizmos, red light doohickies. A community that does this - monthly or more… Us, first timers fearlessly wading into the night sky. My down jacket zipped up to the neck, head tipped back in this camping chair to witness meteors streaking through the dark sky. Is there a friend you would like to visit...someone who is now gone? Someone you would like to have a conversation with? Julie Potiker guides you through this journey. She completes the meditation with her poem, "July Morning". This version ends with music allowing you to drift off into sleep. July morning, by Julie Potiker There’s a California wild rose bush in bright sun at the edge of the patio in Hailey, Idaho where I sit in the shade of the house and sip my morning coffee A silky smooth brown and beige 14 inch garter snake is sunning itself in the moist mulch under the leafy bush. His small beady eye is watching me watch him Morning coffee so different here than Southern California The air is teaming with flying creatures- tiny insects catching the light, and bees as big as ping pong balls bopping in and out of the grass and shrubs. Only the Western Fly Catcher and Black capped Chickadee are tweeting, that’s another big change - in Cali there’s dozens of species of birds that create the morning symphony. Here, only a few layer their voices to the sound of the river flowing and the gentle breeze whistling through the green coin leaves of the quacking Aspen trees. This is perfect, I think, different yet perfect, as a plump American Robin drops in to say good morning, good morning, we do things bigger here in the mountains. Close your eyes and imagine the warm rays of the sun embracing you as you melt into this guided meditation led by Julie Potiker. She completes the meditation with the poem, "The Sun", by Mary Oliver. "The Sun", by Mary Oliver. Have you ever seen anything in your life more wonderful than the way the sun, every evening, relaxed and easy, floats toward the horizon and into the clouds or the hills, or the rumpled sea, and is gone - and how it slides again out of the blackness, every morning, on the other side of the world, like a red flower streaming upward on its heavenly oils, say, on a morning in early summer, at its perfect imperial distance - and have you ever felt for anything such wild love - do you think there is anywhere, in any language, a word billowing enough for the pleasure that it fills you, as the sun reaches out, as it warms you as you stand there, empty-handed - or have you too turned from this world - or have you too gone crazy for power, for things? -Mary Oliver Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . Think of a word or phrase that you find soothing - as you listen to this guided meditation led by Julie Potiker. She completes the meditation with the poem, "Soft Medicine", by James Crews. This meditation ends with music allowing you to drift off into sleep. Soft Medicine, by James Crews Soft medicine is what I need today— summer sun filtered by a lemon tree and cedar chips cushioning each step across the rocky yard. I need wool socks and a hoodie zipped up to my chin in spite of the heat. I need the relief of dandelion tea wrapping a gauze of steam around my hands wrapped around the warm mug. With each sip, let me find the kind of peace we make ourselves these days—let me see your face and not look up at the kitchen clock, counting down the minutes and seconds we might have left together. —James Crews Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . Julie Potiker leads you through this guided meditation focused on compassion. She completes the meditation with the poem, "In a Friend's Garden", by James Crews. This meditation ends with music allowing you to drift off into sleep. In a Friend's Garden, by James Crews "I want to be here to see the poppies open," my friend says, telling me why she never travels anymore in the middle of summer. We each hold one of the heavy buds whose petals already ache to break free and spread, bursting red at the seams. The mulch is warm beneath our feet, and sunlight shimmers pink in the sifting leaves of the Japanese maple. I keep hearing her words - I want to be here - and feel something new leaning toward the light inside me too, some seed of need just to be rooted right where I am for each small pleasure, every rippling wave of sorrow. She wraps an arm around me, and we go inside for tea. There is nothing to escape from, but our own desire to escape at all. -James Crews Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . Breathe in as you relax into this calming meditation led by Julie Potiker. She completes the meditation with her poem, "Whispers of a Fifth Force". This meditation ends with music allowing you to drift off into sleep. Whispers of a Fifth Force, by Julie Potiker In Idaho’s early morning hush, I settle into the Adirondack chair by the fire pit, fast running river less than a pickle-ball court away, my slippered feet rest on the cool back of a boulder, smooth and steady beneath me. Above, the Aspen leaves shimmer— green coins rustling their soft applause in the mountain breeze. A plump American Robin bounces a spindly branch nearby. Gravity holds me gently, as it always has, the known forces humming their familiar song: electromagnetism weaving light across the sky, strong and weak nuclear threads binding the world within. Resting my head on the chair, I contemplate Far beyond this stillness, Bennu drifts— its ancient body charting paths we can measure, paths we can question. Physicists tilt their heads, listening for the quiet slip of anomaly, searching for a fifth force hidden in the mathematics. So far, Bennu holds its silence. But Apophis approaches— another messenger tumbling closer, another chance to find what might have always been there. Since the 1980s they have wondered— Could it be anti-gravity? Could it be quintessence? A hidden thread explaining dark energy, or light dark matter a secret folded into the fabric of everything we thought we knew. I breathe in the pine-sweet air, feel the steady earth beneath my feet, The cool breeze gently touches my face— and in the rustling leaves above, the universe whispers: there may yet be more. -Julie Potiker Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . Use your breath to breathe in compassion for yourself and others through this guided meditation led by Julie Potiker. She completes the meditation with the poem, "The Guest House", by Rumi. This meditation ends with music allowing you to drift off into sleep. The Guest House This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, Some momentary awareness comes As an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, Who violently Weep your house Empty of its furniture, Still, treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out For some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, Meet them at the door laughing, And invite them in. Be grateful for whoever comes, Because each has been set As a guide from beyond. -Rumi Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . This meditation may be just what you need right now. Julie Potiker completes this guided meditation with her poem, "Sunday Morning June 1, 2025". This meditation ends with music allowing you to drift off into sleep. Sunday Morning June 1, 2025, by Julie Potiker Stretched out on the thick grey sofa cushion, the courtyard still cool with early light. Above me, the carob tree leans in—its green leaves filtering the sun, green pods long and thick, not yet brown or curled with time. Before me, a swath of pale blue Texas ranger shimmers like sky. Tucked above and below, magenta moss rose spills in bright whispers. Closer to the ground, white dog rose lifts its face, next to the flame of alstroemeria— orange petals flared with red, as if the morning is speaking in color. In another bed, tiny prairie flea-bane mends the spaces between hybrid tea roses— their soft blush in peach and pink rising like a slow breath. California tree poppy—floppy, wild— leans toward the bold crimson bottle-brush. The soundtrack, a bird symphony. The rhythmic coo of the mourning dove. The grosbeak’s steel tapping. The sparrow and finch melodies, warbler, towhee, woodpecker— each voice layered into the morning like a choir without need for harmony. Allen’s hummingbird stitches between sage vine and air, a flash, then absence. I stay still. Let the morning hold me. Let the petals, birdsong, feathers, the light be enough. This is the benediction I needed. -Julie Potiker Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . This meditation ends with music allowing you to drift off into sleep. “Going gently looks like” (prompt from Julia Fehrenbacher) This rounded cane chair, my body nestled in cozy fleece, the breeze kissing my thighs, knees, shins, and ankles. Black-headed Grosbeak trilling like a Song Sparrow Cobweb threads fluttering from the body of the cracked wooden shorebird to its black wire legs Western Backyard Birds pocket guide dusty atop the Cornell Lab of Ornithology field guide book, on the weathered cement side table. Going gently is me on my second cup of coffee in a mug that says, fill this cup with joy, given to me by a place where I feel belonging and connection. A Cedar Waxwing is here, a Sparrow, the Grosbeak, the wind, and me, going gently. ~Julie Potiker Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . Julie Potiker lead you through this guided meditation focusing on what you need right now. She completes the meditation with the poem, "How to Love Yourself", by James Crews. This meditation ends with the poem so you can drift off to sleep at the end. How to Love Yourself Sit by the open window as long as you can, listening as rain taps out its own rhythm on the canopies of trees at last gone to green. Feel how that music seeps into you as each new droplet sinks into soil, touching earthworm and root, feeding all the small things we cannot see. This solitude is food for you too, the kind of love you give yourself as you would a guest in your home. Ask: what do you need, how can I help, the way rain offers itself to the world, polishing each stone and leaf, before dropping down into the grateful ground. —James Crews Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . This meditation led by Julie Potiker might be just what you need today. She completes the meditation with the poem, "Imaginal Cells", by James Crews. (This version ends with music so you can drift off into sleep.) Imaginal Cells, by James Crews Like caterpillars born with imaginal cells that know how to become a thing with wings, we too carry a dream inside ourselves of a different, better world. There will be struggle, yes, as we claw our way out of a chrysalis that can no longer keep us trapped, as we give the heart room to breathe, space to seek the nectar of flowers, and the nectar of mud and dung alike, feeding on darkness when darkness is all there is. If we can imagine a body that breaks free of its own container, if we can envision a place where everyone feels safe and welcome, then we can become anything. Perhaps it begins with a small yes stirring in a cluster of cells, and the trust that this—whatever this might be is never the end of the story. -James Crews Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . Breath in peace for yourself - as you breath out peace for others through this guided meditation led by Julie Potiker. She completes the meditation with the poem, "Light Show", by James Crews. "Light Show", by James Crews . Before supper, I called upstairs to him: Come see the light show. And without a moment’s hesitation, he rushed down to the basement to stand next to me on the other side of a pool of sun stretching from the one small window in the door across the concrete floor. We watched in silence as light moved through the leaves of the cherry tree, mingling with shadows, rippling and shifting like the mind when you go quiet enough to isolate each thought— ever-changing, not made of anything you can touch. We stood captivated by that puddle of late light, which seemed to ask: When was the last time you dropped everything and danced? -James Crews Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . Relax and breathe along with Julie Potiker as she leads you through this healing breath meditation. She completes the meditation with her poem, "In the Habitable Zone". In the Habitable Zone, by Julie Potiker I let the thought settle—dew on my skin— 120 light years from my morning coffee, a world, more than eight times bigger than Earth, orbits a red dwarf star. Spinning steadily in what scientists call the habitable zone. It could be a Hycean world, covered in water so deep it forgets land. And maybe, just maybe, tiny beings float there like Earth plankton releasing dimethyl sulfide into an atmosphere the stirs with methane, each molecule , a question flung toward us by the James Webb’s patient lens. Science says: 99.7 percent confidence. Still, let’s be careful. There are other paths that mimic life. But I want to exhale wonder. Let awe arise like phytoplankton basking in the sun. If the universe speaks in more than one place how can we not listen with our whole hearts. Maybe, just maybe, we are not alone after all. -In the Habitable Zone, by Julie Potiker. Use your breath to focus on what you need right now - through this guided meditation led by Julie Potiker. She completes the meditation with her poem, "11 minutes". 11 minutes, by Julie Potiker The Karmine Line, invisible. But real enough to draw a boundary between us and what's beyond. At 62 miles the air gives up its grip and Blue Origin, that sleek silver wish, carries six women through suborbital space into weightlessness. 11 minutes, a life can turn inside that. 11 minutes, enough to change how the soul spells home. And when they landed they brought space back in their eyes. I watched video of them landing how they must have looked at the trees, the grass, and each other differently as if the whole world had shifted just slightly toward kindness. I wish I could go, feel the silence, see the curve of the earth with my own eyes. But that journey isn't mine. Not this lifetime. Instead, I breathe into the knowing. We are made of stardust, bones, breath, memory already part of the vastness, already connected to everything. Space isn't only up there. It lives in here. -Julie Potiker Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . Join Julie Potiker as she leads you through this Classic Metta Meditation. She completes the meditation with her poem, "March on Meadowbrook Road". March, on Meadowbrook Road, by Julie Potiker. Down the way from the old Triumph mine, Narrow-leaf Willow, a rust-colored and wild, leans into the breeze. Rubber Rabbit-brush waits in stillness, not yet yellow - there's room here for what takes time. Basin Wild Rye a parchment scrap from last year's book, whispers its end in a papery rush. Between patches of snow, soft ground starts to look like something breathing. My boots sink low - just enough to remind me there's life below, waiting to rise, quiet as roots, steady and slow, without need for applause. Chickadees gossip - Black-capped, mountain, in stereo tones stitched through the trees, voices bright. A Northern Flicker taps at Aspens, bare as bones. Does it know the language that flows beneath this frost? Roots that spill messages deep, a network unseen holding hands in sleep. And I stand there, Stetson tipped just right, letting the sun do what it does best - warm my cheek. It says: you're here and so is spring. And that's enough. More than enough, I think. -Julie Potiker Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . Find compassion for yourself and those around you through this guided meditation led by Julie Potiker. She completes the meditation with the poem, "The Return of Hearts and Minds", by James Crews. The Return of Hearts and Minds, by James Crews I wake before dawn this morning to live inside the quiet, to feast on the dark bread of the possible. The house breathes on its own, though no footsteps stamp the floor above, no doors slam shut, and nothing stirs outside except for the masked raccoon, hungry eyes glowing green. I know who I am in these small hours, and watch for signs that daylight is finally coming, spreading like a blue ink that brightens the sky instead of darkening it. This early, I imagine the hearts and minds of everyone who gave them up the day before, tossed out as easy as paper crumpled on the floor, suddenly returned to them, compassion flowing into each of us like an IV drip, like fresh light meeting our eyes with the chance to begin again. —James Crews Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . Relax into this meditation -- as you breathe in compassion. Julie Potiker completes the meditation with her poem, "Joy has Four Legs and Doesn't Ask for Permission". Joy has Four Legs and Doesn’t Ask for Permission, by Julie Potiker No one told them about wars or the price of eggs. Mutts and pure breeds of every flavor run without hesitation, as if the world has always been this open, this forgiving. Wellington leaps and sprints with every dog chasing a ball Madeline rolls her old bones in the wet sand. One black lab charges the waves with a Frisbee in his mouth, another digs fiercely – sand flying above his head - both entirely certain of their purpose. Just now. Just wind. Just sand and salt and the miracle of tails wagging. Nothing in them resists the day. The heaviness in my chest loosens, This is how healing looks— wild, sandy, and grinning. -Julie Potiker Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . In this guided meditation you will focus on peace, love, and compassion. Julie Potiker competes her meditation with the poem, Prayer, by James Crews. "Prayer", by James Crews I ask for just the slightest shift in my thinking, the kindest sifting of my busy mind so only wonder and peace are left behind. So that as I walk in sleet on this spring morning I can see even these muddy ruts made by careless trucks on the forest trail as harbors of miracle, knowing they will fill with enough snow melt and rain for tadpoles to swim in come summer, until that sunlit instant when they feel the flexing of legs in the water beneath them, and leap out onto the ground, their bodies having decided, by instinct alone, to be soft and alive in this world. -Prayer, by James Crews. Relax into this guided meditation led by Julie Potiker. She completes the meditation with the poem, "Sunflower", by James Crews. Sunflower, by James Crews "Joy is not made to be a crumb." Mary Oliver once wrote, but isn't that how it often shows up at first? One crumb of attention, then another, and another until you're able to follow the trail leading to the volunteer sunflower you hadn't noticed blooming by the garden. "Volunteer," we say, meaning no human hand nestled that seed in the ground, though the same could be said of joy too, which seems to spring up out of nowhere when you see the face of the flower the French call tournesol , meaning "turned toward the sun." And don't we each carry a small sun in our chests that tells us where to turn, where it's warm, where something bright has struggled up out of the earth, and is now calling our name? -Sunflower, by James Crews. Using your breathe ease into this guided meditation led by Julie Potiker. She completes the meditation with a reading of the poem, "Awe", by James Crews. Awe It's a shiver that climbs the trellis of the spine each tingle a bright white morning glory bursting into blossom beneath the skin. It can happen anywhere, anytime, even finding a sleeve of ice worn by a branch all morning, now fallen on a bed of snow. You can choose to pause, pick it up, hold that cold thing in your hand or not. Few tell us that wonder and awe are decisions we make daily, hourly minute by minute in the tiny offices of the heart, tilting the head to look up at every tree turned into a chandelier by light striking ice in just the right way. - Awe, by James Crews Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . This guided meditation may be just what you need today. Julie Potiker completes the meditation with the poem, "The Most Important Thing", by Julia Fehrenbacher. The Most Important Thing, by Julia Fehrenbacher I am making a home inside myself. A shelter of kindness where everything is forgiven, everything allowed—a quiet patch of sunlight to stretch out without hurry, where all that has been banished and buried is welcomed, spoken, listened to—released. A fiercely friendly place I can claim as my very own. I am throwing arms open to the whole of myself—especially the fearful, fault-finding, falling apart, unfinished parts, knowing every seed and weed, every drop of rain, has made the soil richer. I will light a candle, pour a hot cup of tea, gather around the warmth of my own blazing fire. I will howl if I want to, knowing this flame can burn through any perceived problem, any prescribed perfectionism, any lying limitation, every heavy thing. I am making a home inside myself where grace blooms in grand and glorious abundance, a shelter of kindness that grows all the truest things. I whisper hallelujah to the friendly sky. Watch now as I burst into blossom. - The Most Important Thing, by Julia Fehrenbacher Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . This guided meditation led by Julie Potiker focuses on goodness - as you breathe in and out. She completes the meditation with her poem, "February 11th, 2025". February 11th, 2025, by Julie Potiker. Rain is coming, there’s a damp chill as I zip my down jacket, tuck my slippered feet under me in my favorite listening chair under the eaves. Bewick Wrens, tail up, are chirping and trilling in the green leafy branches of the carob trees. When one drops down onto the bricks, I get a close look of his plump little body. I’d love to hold him in my upturned palm. Orange Crowned Warbler gives me the same maternal pang. I’m watching a small one flick leaves off the branches, hearing the thwack as leaf hits bricks. Song Sparrow and House Finch are close - perhaps in the trees near the empty feeders. I’ve paused their food on the recommendation of experts to minimize the risk of bird flu. The white plastic seed container with the twist on lid sits untouched on the stone counter, surrounded by a dozen Mexican limes that let go from the tree above. Spotted Towhee takes over the airwaves as it begins to drizzle. It’s a sound unmistakably his, a sort of twisted croak/trill. Coffee cold now, I duck inside for a fresh hot brew. -February 11, 2025, by Julie Potiker Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos" , and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos" . In this guided meditation led by Julie Potiker you will focus on a being who brings you joy - and then move into classic loving kindness phrases. She completes her meditation with the poem, "Dream Life", by Billy Collins. Dream Life, by Billy Collins Whenever I have a dream about Poetry, which is not very often considering how much I think about her, she appears as a seamstress who works in the window of a tailor's shop in a section of a provincial city laden with a grey and heavy sky. I know the place so well I could find the dimly lit shop without asking anyone for directions, though the streets are mostly empty, except when I saw a solitary man looking in the window of a butcher's, his hands in the pockets of his raincoat. Poetry works long hours and rarely speaks to the tailor as she bends to repair the fancy costumes of various allegorical figures who were told by Thrift how little she charges. Maybe the ermine collar on the robe of Excess has come loose or a rip in the gown of Abandon needs mending, and no questions will be asked about how that came to pass. A little bell over the door rings whenever a customer enters or leaves, but Poetry is too busy thinking about her children as she replaces a gold button on the blazer of Pride. Dream Life, by Billy Collins, from his book of poems; The Rain in Portugal.
