When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. This week my guest is Greg Hanson; show promoter, sometimes-drummer, and head of the Brooklyn tape label King Pizza Records. He was kind enough to have me over to his place on a warm October evening to talk about growing up in the suburbs of NYC, film school in Boston, booking and playing Brooklyn shows over the last decade, striving to create a community, and how to be okay with taking care of yourself. From King Pizza’s website: “King Pizza Records is support, community, and fun. We are not just a label, we are a collective. Resistance is futile. We are about creating a scene and building our community. Come hang out with us. We throw lots of parties and release lots of records and tapes.” King Pizza Records official site http://www.kingpizzarecords.com/ King Pizza on Bandcamp https://kingpizzarecords.bandcamp.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kingpizzarecords Twitter: https://twitter.com/kingpizzarecs Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kingpizzarecs/ Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/king-pizza-records Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2lJ1gJeAlZ-90yEv9ginew/videos…
This week my guests are Ev Gold and Paul Claro, Brooklyn-born cousins who make up the heavy-experimental duo Cinema Cinema. We met up over the summer to talk about growing up in south Brooklyn, playing gigs in what’s known these days as “Old New York,” how formats have changed over the years, and, of course, their favorite music. Since their formation in 2008, Cinema Cinema have played nearly 500 live shows including half a dozen European tours and an opening slot for Black Flag’s 2014 North American tour. They’ve also released a handful of albums, including the latest, CCXMD, released Nov. 1st 2019 on Nefarious Industries. Cinema Cinema is currently on tour of the West Coast through November. Tour dates can be found at https://www.cinemacinemaband.com/booking.
