Exile

When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Learn more at www.lbi.org/kollisch . Exile is a production of the Leo Baeck Institute , New York | Berlin and Antica Productions . It’s narrated by Mandy Patinkin. Executive Producers include Katrina Onstad, Stuart Coxe, and Bernie Blum. Senior Producer is Debbie Pacheco. Associate Producers are Hailey Choi and Emily Morantz. Research and translation by Isabella Kempf. Sound design and audio mix by Philip Wilson, with help from Cameron McIver. Theme music by Oliver Wickham. Voice acting by Natalia Bushnik. Special thanks to the Kollisch family for the use of Eva’s two memoirs, “Girl in Movement” and “The Ground Under My Feet”, the Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College and their “Voices of Feminism Oral History Project”, and Soundtrack New York.…

“ I swore off playing basketball ever again.” -Phil Morrison Imagine growing up with dreams of playing basketball professionally, only to quit after your first year of college, thinking you’d never pick up a ball again—then years later, finding yourself playing in front of 54,000 people. This week on the show, Kurt and Chad welcome Phil Morrison—founder of Hoops For Christ ( https://hoopsforchrist.org ), basketball instructor, and missionary—to share his incredible journey through the game of basketball. After a successful high school career, Phil had the opportunity to play college basketball. But after just one year, he walked away, giving up his dream of playing professionally. Then, a life-altering encounter with God changed everything. With a new sense of purpose, Phil found his way back to the game, playing at Asbury College, where he became an All-American and the first player in school history to go pro. His career took him overseas, where he played for multiple teams—and eventually, he found himself on a court in the Philippines, fulfilling a dream he once had in his sleep, playing in front of 54,000 fans. From quitting basketball to meeting God and his future wife at the same event, to playing around the world and launching a global ministry, Phil’s journey has been about more than just the game. It’s a story only God could write—and it’s still being written.…

Dallas Willard (to philosophy students in class)- “What is the purpose of business? ”Student response- “Profits!” Dallas Willard- “Is that what you will tell your customers?” One of the things that can get men (and women) really engaged with when you bring it up, is business and work. Starting a business is scary but also invigorating. Challenging but rewarding. But if we’re running a business by God‘s economy and not the worlds, what does running a kingdom minded business look like? On this weeks show Kurt has on longtime friends and businessmen Mark Green and Glenn Bednarczyk. They talk about how they run their businesses and how they can help hold each other accountable and encourage one another through having a “board of directors” for one another’s business with other businessmen. (This is a repeat episode - enjoy!)…

“Growing up, no one was allowed to talk at the dinner table except dad.” Dan Woodard was raised with six unspoken rules: don’t talk, don’t feel, don’t trust, don’t think, don’t choose, and don’t change. These rules guided his life from boyhood till early in his marriage. When he finally dared to break these rules, it disrupted his status quo but ultimately set him free to experience and enjoy healthy relationships. In this compelling book, Let’s Break the Rules, Dan teams up with Dr. Dan Reinhardt to describe the damage these six rules can cause and how to find healing and wholeness. This book offers practical tools to break the cycle of abuse, relational brokenness, and family drama. (This is a repeat episode - enjoy!)…

Week 2!!! “Our first year of marriage was good for Brad , but not for Marilyn.“ -Brad Rhoads, co-founder of Grace Marriage. If you ignore your houseplant what will happen? If you don’t feed and care for the family pet, what will happen? What about your marriage? Your spouse? On this weeks show, Kurt and Chad welcome Pastor Brad Rhoads and licensed counselor Nathan Thompson to discuss Brad’s ministry to churches (Grace Marriage https://gracemarriage.com ) to talk about grace in marriage on week 2 of a 2 show series on marriage. The majority of energy and focus on marriage ministries is either on pre-marital (before you get married) or crisis marriage (when things are headed in the wrong direction). There is a massive gap in the church these days as it relates to ministering to marriages to keep them healthy. Brad shares his testimony of how the first year of marriage set the tone for the birth of the ministry. He and his wife Marilyn realized they were in a performance based marriage instead of a grace based marriage. The Bible says we are saved by grace through faith but what about your marriage? Do you give your wife the same grace that you’ve received?…

Prior to his Radio days, Kurt was the men’s minister of a church. It was the first time that church had a full-time men’s minister on staff. Where do you begin? How did Jesus put together his crew of men? Who are the people who need to be involved? Why is it important?
