On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. In this latest sermon, Pastor Derek talked about the importance of cultivating our hears for prayer and revival. He taught on how our hearts need to be hungry for the things of God, and for seeing God move on our campus.

Pastor Amber continued our series on cultivating our hearts by preaching on the topic of growth. She taught through the story of Josiah, and challenged us to not let our hearts for Jesus grow stagnant.
Pastor Derek kicked off the spring semester by introducing our new sermon series. This series is all about cultivating our hearts for the different things of God. In this first message, he preached about cultivating a heart for God.
In our final service of the semester, Pastor Derek preached a message on Jesus' father Joseph. He talked about how Joseph faithfully married Mary and raised Jesus even though the situation was uncertain.
We continued our sermon series on different characters from the beginning of Jesus' life, and Pastor Joel gave us a message on Simeon and Anna. He preached about how their greatness came from how they stayed completely devoted to the coming of Jesus in their lives.
Pastor Derek kicked off our final sermon series of the semester with a message on the greatness of John the Baptist. He taught on how he modeled humility in how he lived his life not for his own glory, but for the coming of Jesus.
For missions week, we got to hear from guest speaker Jake Johnson. Jake and his wife are missionaries to Botswana, and he shared a message on the importance of being sent. He highlighted how we are all sent by God to the people around us.
This week Pastor Amber finished off our sermon series on Counterfeit Truths by sharing about how the suffering we go through shapes our character. She notes how beating the temptation to give in to easy choices shapes us into the person God wants us to become.
Pastor Derek continued our sermon series on counterfeit truth with a message on fame and identity. He preached on how our identities need to be rooted in being a son or daughter of Jesus, and not in the approval of others or achievements.
This week, Pastor Derek started our new sermon series on the temptations of Jesus. He taught us how we have both strong desires and deep desires, and how we can avoid the lies in our life by choosing our deepest desires over the desires we feel in the moment.
In week two of our sermon series on the pillars of Chi Alpha, Pastor Derek preached on the importance of community. He emphasized how we cannot follow Jesus alone, and he challenged us to be our authentic selves as we engage in community going forward.
