احبThe War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. A.J.'s Bio: My name is A.J. Howard and I am co-founder and a ceo of Tracked Learning. I have worked in special education for over a decade and have two masters degrees and my national board certification. I live in northeast Washington with my wife and 3 kids. We love spending as much time together and. Wing outdoors as much as we can. With high caseloads and being the only sped teacher in my building while overseeing multiple programs, I was starting to burn out quick and it transferred to my home life, something I was not okay with. I needed better quality data and to stop reinventing the wheel weekly, monthly, quarterly. I started compiling information, way to assess, meeting with special education teachers across the globe, along with other things and team up with Jeremy Korthuis to build what is now Tracked Learning. A software program designed to help streamline the special education action process and get teachers the quality data that they need to make informed decisions to best support their students. It gives others and myself the time to be intentional and effective and also the head space to be fully present with my family at home.

Josh has worked with students for the past 11 years and held many different positions in the educational realm including residential youth worker, instructional assistant, special education teacher, district behavior support, and SEL coach. When students returned in person Spring 2021, Josh noted that internalizing and externalizing behaviors had seemingly spiked across settings. Increasingly he heard, “students don’t know how to behave” and saw this as an opportunity. He thought to himself, “if they don’t know math or reading, we teach math or reading,” and sought a way to intentionally teach behavior at a tier 1 level via implementation of social-emotional learning (SEL). Rowan County Schools accepted this proposal, and he became SEL Coach for the district in 2021. With the support of the district’s Project AWARE Program Director, Tara Cornett, this structure has grown to dedicated SEL Coaches (shoutout Megan, Sarah, Emma, and Cody) in each school in Rowan County, and the team looks forward to seeing where they can positively impact school climate and culture from here.
