Interview - David Pepose - Space Ghost! On Sale May 1, 2024 - Artist JONATHAN LAU
- David, thanks for being on the AIPT Comics podcast. How much research did you feel you needed diving into Space Ghost, or are you a super fanatic and needed no time to know it all?
- Jan, Jace, and Space Ghost proper hasn’t really had a backstory, which means you could start clean slate. Was there an inspiration that you started with to delve into building out this continuity?
- We’ve had Batman writers tell us they hear Kevin Conroy in their heads when writing him, do you find that Gary Owens or George Lowe pop in your head when writing Space Ghost?
- There’s going to be fans of Coast to Coast and Hanna Barbara, are you thinking about both audiences for this series?
- If Space Ghost was a song, what would it be and why?
- Sidewinder - First Aquaman song
- Queen Flash Gordon Theme
- You’re just coming off Punisher, you had a great stint on FF, could you give us a hint at what’s next for you at Marvel?

Dave : The Ultimates #10 ( Mateus Manhanini ) CJ : The Terminator #5 ( Declan Shalvey ) Interview : Tyler Boss You’ll Do Bad Things #1 out March 26, with artist Adriano Turtulici What inspired you to blend the true crime genre with the pulpy, neon-soaked aesthetic of Giallo films in You’ll Do Bad Things ? How did the concept of a true crime writer whose fictional murders start happening in real life come to life? Was it your own writers block? Can you describe the creative journey behind developing Seth Holms as a character struggling to write a happy ending? The comic is described as a "love letter to the Italian slasher genre"—how have films like those of Dario Argento influenced your storytelling and visuals? 13 How do you balance the elements of horror, gore, and B-horror camp with a critique of our cultural obsession with true crime? I really liked how, in a scene set in the narrative, you call back to the fact we’re in the story within the story via lettering, was that in the script or Hassan’s idea? With He Came in with a Smile as a backdrop, how does Seth’s past impact the unfolding narrative in this new miniseries? What are some of the challenges you faced while infusing both literary and cinematic influences into a cohesive comic book experience? In what ways do you hope readers engage with the commentary on true crime fandom as they dive into this dark, twisted world? If you discovered that your own stories were coming to life, which character from 'You'll Do Bad Things' would you least want to encounter in a dark alley, and how would you try to escape their clutches?…

Interview: Matthew Rosenberg We're Taking Everyone Down with Us #1 out March 26 (FOC March 3) Artist Stefano Landini Colorist Roman Titov Letters Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou Story and Themes We're Taking Everyone Down With Us blends super-spies, mad scientists, and robots with themes of family and revenge. What drew you to this mix of genres and how did it shape the story’s tone? Annalise’s journey is centered around two big choices—revenge or normalcy. What inspired this core conflict, and how do you balance her emotional arc with the high-stakes action? Favorite James Bond? You’ve worked on grounded crime stories like 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank and more fantastical ones like What's the Furthest Place From Here? . How does We're Taking Everyone Down With Us build on or depart from those previous works? Family seems to be a recurring theme in much of your work. What’s unique about the father-daughter relationship in this story? Characters and Development The story leans into some wild concepts—super-spies, futuristic tech, and global domination. Were there any particular influences from spy fiction, sci-fi, or pop culture that helped shape these elements? Process and Legacy You've mentioned this story turned out funnier and more heartfelt than you originally planned. Were there any moments during the writing process where you surprised yourself with how the story evolved? With your earlier work, like 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank , now being adapted into a film, how do you think your storytelling has changed or evolved over the years, and how does We're Taking Everyone Down With Us reflect that growth? Fun/Silly Question If Annalise’s robot bodyguards were to pick a theme song for their revenge mission, what song would they choose and why? DC vs. Vampires Questions Switching gears to DC vs. Vampires World War V, we already spoke wayyyyy back in August about the series before it launched, but with the special DC vs. Vampires: World War V – Darkness and Light #1 and essentially half the maxiseries out, (#7 out Mar 12th, 2025), how are you digging the fan reaction? With "DC vs. Vampires: World War V – Darkness and Light #1" releasing this week, Are there themes or messages you're particularly excited to explore in this installment? Alfred is becoming more or less the “good” guy main character, Can you discuss the psychological and moral complexities you aimed to portray in Alfred as he navigates his new identity as a GL? If DC vs. Vampires was made in 2026 riffing off the Absolute Universe, how would it be different? Anything you could tease for the second half of this series?…

Something that I’ve loved about Nights is how the most insane surprised occur many times in an issue, is there an art to plotting a single issue like you do? As we turn the page onto season 2, looking back at the first 12 issues, is there anything you would tweak or do differently? Luigi, you’ve worked with Wyatt long enough to have plenty of banter about "bizarre demands." Can you describe a moment where Wyatt’s vision challenged or inspired you to take the art in an unexpected direction? The series mixes playful moments with genuine horror. For both of you, what’s your approach to balancing these tones, and are there horror or non-horror works that directly influenced this? I gotta ask, nudity in this title is a curious one. Sometimes we see things, sometimes genitals are covered up, what gives?! The series takes place across both mundane and fantastical locations—Estonia’s cold landscapes and Las Vegas’s vibrant excess are especially highlighted in Nights #13. What’s the significance of setting in this arc, and how did you choose those locations? If Vince, Gray, Tsukumari, and the rest of the crew formed a rock band, what would their band name be, and what kind of music would they play?…

How do you balance his intellectual, manipulative side with his more overt, imposing displays of power in this series? Vision and Timing: One World Under Doom has been in the works since 2023 and I can’t help but think this was made to be read with a new U.S. president shaking things up, am I way off base with this feeling? The Sorcerer Supreme Element: Incorporating Doom’s newfound status as Sorcerer Supreme super charges the villain yet we know we can’t have characters running around like gods… are there chinks in his armor you’re weaving into this story so that the heroes have a chance to defeat him? Squirrel girl fans must know, will she be a key component of your event? World-Building: Latveria has been shut away for some time, with it seemingly opening up in the first issue, how important to this story are any societal shifts or cultural dynamics spinning out of Doom taking over everything? Collaboration: Last time we spoke in November you were wrapping up the last issue of the arc, with some time to reflect on writing it, along with working with other creative teams for tie-ins, do you have a new perspective on what we’re in store for? Character Reactions: The Avengers and Fantastic Four have faced Doom countless times, yet Doom has been hidden away for some time, does that influence their emotional responses with Doom’s new global domination? The Mystery of Power: The series teases a mystery about how Doom convinced the world’s leaders to accept his rule, and it sort of reminded me of WWI, without giving away spoilers. Were you looking at any historical moments for inspiration to kick off his rule? Visual Storytelling: R.B. Silva’s art is a standout feature of the series, and likely he stuns consistently as I saw with issue #1, but do you have any Silva high water mark moments in any specific issues? Silly Question: If Doctor Doom were to design a reality TV show in his new United Latveria, what would it be called, and who would be its target audience?…

What inspired the decision to begin this new "Rebuild" era, why now? How do Radiant Black #31 and Rogue Sun #25 serve as jumping-on points for new readers? For Kyle (Radiant Black): With Marshall now fully stepping into the role of Radiant Black post-Catalyst War, what unique challenges will he face, both as a hero and as a person, in this new chapter? Check out a smattering of the questions asked in this interview below. What sort of themes are you juggling in Seasons? What inspired you to weave these themes together, and how do they relate to the broader human experience? How did you approach building the world of Seasons , and what were some of the unique challenges in creating a story set across different landscapes and "seasons"? Your work often includes flawed and complex protagonists. What can readers expect from the characters in Seasons ? You’ve collaborated with many artists over the years. What drew you to work with Paul Azaceta on this project, and how does his style complement the story? Something so endearing about the first issue is how it seems quite ordinary, yet subtle things like a guy with a jetpack reveal there’s more to this world. How do you balance showing too much or showing just enough? If you two were thrown into the world of Seasons, which of you would last the longest, and what ridiculous strategy would you use to survive? So what's The Seasons about? Summer, Winter, Spring and Autumn are the Seasons Sisters, the daughters of the world-renowned Seasons Detectives. Ten years ago, their famous parents disappeared. Left to raise themselves, the sisters formed an unbreakable bond. Now that bond is tested as the sisters fall prey to sinister forces. The youngest sister, Spring, is the last hope of saving them from a fate worse than death. Will Spring be able to piece her shattered family back together before it’s too late for them all? RICK REMENDER (BLACK SCIENCE) and PAUL AZACETA (OUTCAST) weave an elevated tale of whimsical horror unlike anything ever experienced in comics and it all starts with this double-length premiere issue!…

Can you talk about what went into making such a bold decision? Exploring Diana’s Loss The solicit for issue #4 mentions that Diana pays a price she can’t bear. Without giving away spoilers, how does this loss shape her emotionally and strategically moving forward? Collaboration Between Writer and Artist How do you work together to bring Diana’s sacrifices and triumphs to life, especially in such emotionally and visually impactful moments? Building Diana’s Allies Allies play a crucial role in Diana’s journey in issue #4. Can you tease any new or returning characters and their importance to the story? Balancing Epic and Intimate Stakes Absolute Wonder Woman balances large-scale conflict with deeply personal stakes. How do you ensure both aspects feel equally significant? You’ve said that Historia is sort of part of the DNA of the book even if it’s not cannon. Could you mention anything specfic you drew from that and where may have diverged? Recently there’s been a growing amount of WW/Cheetah shippers, does that influence your use of Barbara Minerva at all? A question from Ryan Perry, you’ve effectively used hyperviolence so that it’s something the reader can’t look away from, yet it doesn’t feel provocative. Were there any specific challenges or opportunities in crafting his 'early days' narrative while staying true to the character fans love? Chances of a Batman Year One reference? Will there be data pages? Gosalyn plays a key role in Darkwing's world. How does her perspective shape the narrative in this series, and how does her dynamic with DW evolve through the story? I recently spoke to Jeff Parker about Zootopia, how has it been working with Disney on this? What inspired the idea of framing this series as an 'unauthorized (and unorganized) autobiography'? How does this approach bring new depth or humor to the character? Darkwing Duck has an impressive rogues' gallery. Can fans expect to see any iconic villains in this series, and how do they fit into his 'possibly embellished' origin story? Brandt & Stein bring their artistic talents to the series. How do their visuals enhance the humor, action, or nostalgic feel of Darkwing Duck ? What do you hope long-time fans of Darkwing Duck and newcomers alike take away from this series? Thematically, what inspired the blend of comedic and horror elements in this story, and how do these genres enhance the narrative? We’ve had Pornsak on, Michael Walsh, and each time I’m curious, how did you guys get in on this exciting project of one-shots? How was your collaboration with Pornsak? The Horizon Experiment introduces complex characters dealing with extraordinary circumstances—how did you approach balancing humanity with the monstrous elements of the plot? Can you share your creative process for developing the visual tone of the comic, and how the artwork complements the story's darker, chaotic themes? The concept of 'monsters' often carries deeper metaphorical weight—what underlying social or personal themes did you aim to explore through this one-shot? Take us through your collaborative process? For instance, what do the action beats look like in a script vs the page? Michael, a lot of the art has an almost fish-eye lens, what was your goal in that approach? Were there any monsters or villains you didn’t get to put in here that you’ve got sketched out? J, you probably get this all the time, but with a few comics series now under your belt, do you approach writing comics differently than with TV? How far out have you planned future chapters? What comics are you currently reading?…

With the Absolute Power tie-in wrapped up, how does it feel to get back to your main story arc? What does Trinity mean to you, as far as her potential legacy for Wonder Woman and DC? Should we expect The Sovereign to show up, is he inherently tied to Trinity’s origin? I feel like, with the creation of Damian, DC Comics has sort of owned the aspect of child heroes, and so far you’ve seemed to tie Damian and Trinity quite a bit. Are they inherently important to each other? We’ve gotten to know Trinity via the wonderful backups with art by Belén Ortega, and notably absent are the adults. Might you be exploring where they went off to? Daniel, your art is so striking, the fight around the Washington monument is one of my favorite fights ever in comics! What themes are you most excited to explore with Superman in this series? Are there new facets of his personality or struggles you’re aiming to highlight? The concept of social class is a strong one in the first issue, why was that so important to this character? To be honest, the social class element made me immediately think of Batman, do you think your Superman would get along with Batman? What challenges have you faced in writing Superman (though not for the first time), a character often seen as the ultimate symbol of hope and morality? What would Absolute Superman think of main universe Superman, or vice versa? The first issue seems to suggest there’s some tweaks to Superman’s abilities, or maybe how he charges up. Was there a trial and error process of figuring out this Superman’s power set? Since you’ve been developing this series more or less alongside the Absolute Batman and Wonder Woman, did the development of those series influence your approach or take at all? Interview : Ryan North (STAR TREK LOWER DECKS/WARP YOUR OWN WAY out Oct 22, Fantastic Four, The Rise of Emperor Doom) Ryan, thanks for joining us on the AIPT Comics podcast for the second time! You’re having the nerdiest of years, with Star Trek Lower Decks/Warp Your Own Way out Oct 22nd, the ongoing Lower Decks #1 out November 13 and Fantastic Four cresting into a huge 2025 year, what has been your favorite nerd thing you created this year? STAR TREK LOWER DECKS/WARP YOUR OWN WAY is a choose-your-own adventure! What is the process of plotting something like this? Anything you learned from Hamlet or Romeo & Juliet that opened the way for new experimentation? About how many “storylines” can someone get out of the graphic novel? Maybe this is sacrilege to ask, but do you have a favorite ending for the graphic novel? Is the STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS ongoing series a direct continuation of the animated show, or taking place at a different period? I’ve heard that Heather Antos is basically an encyclopedia of Star Trek lore – how invaluable was it to have her as your editor on this project. Footnotes, you’re one of the best at them…how does it feel to have them return!? Without spoiling anything, Lower Decks #1 touches on a fun part of Trek’s past. Are there any corners of Trek that you haven’t explored in comics that you’d love to? There’s a lot of science in FF, does Star Trek Lower Decks let you stretch your science legs in different ways? You got to visit with the The Fantastic Four: First Steps cast, how long was the visit and how much did you get to see? Do you get a sense they’re sticking to the comics at all? Considering how much science is in your titles, will The Rise of Emperor Doom also be sciencey, or is it all magic all the time? How would the lower decks crew deal with Dr. Doom? Could they withstand his might? Rapid Fire Question Round: Best sandwich? What's one thing you own that you really should throw out? Apples or oranges? What was your first comic? Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? When do you think your style came into its own? What do you think happens when we die? Favorite action movie? Favorite smell? Least favorite smell? Favorite superhero? Most used app on your phone? If you could have dinner with any three characters you’ve created or written, who would they be and why? You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it? A genre you want to make more comics in? Describe the rest of your life in 5 words?…

With multiple Count Crowley titles under your belt and a busy spooky season up ahead with even more comics, tell us: how’d you get attached to this project? Jesús Hervás’ art is so pulpy, what is it about his work you dig the most for this series? It’s rude of us to ask, but do you have a favorite monster in the commandos now that you’ve scripted a few issues? This is an eclectic bunch of monsters, were there any monster types you wanted to fit in, but maybe are saving for later? We understand Zatanna will be popping up in this series! Are you a Zatanna fan, and can you tease how she fits into this tale? Gotcha question: what are your feelings on Bauhaus? You have the unique pleasure of BEING a Suicide Squad member, how might you describe the differences between that team and this one? As an actor and writer, do you read your dialogue out loud to get a feel for each character? No spoilers here, but do you have a favorite moment in Creature Commandos and if so, which issue does it take place in? If a reader wanted to brush up on any horror classics for this series - comics or otherwise - would you recommend any? You also have a story coming up in the DC Horror Presents anthology! What can you tell us about that?…

Interview Michael Walsh (11 a.m. et) Nullhunter #1 (of 12) (Oct 23), Horizon Experiment Sacred Damned (Horizon Experiment Sacred Damned written by Sabir Pirzada) Oct 23, Universal Monsters Frankenstein #2 (Sep 25, 2024) Michael Walsh, thank you for joining us on the AIPT Comics podcast! You’re very busy at the moment, with Nullhunter, Sacred Damned, and Frankenstein all coming out at the same time, how do you find the time? Nullhunter is a bit different with you teaming up with Gustaffo Vargas, what’s the elevator pitch for this one? There are some incredible visuals in Nullhunter, from large-scale action to future tech. As an artist, how detailed are your scripts when you’re drawing the book vs working with a collaborator like Gustaffo? We know Nullhunter is inspired by the Labors of Hercules, but beyond Greek myth as a guide, do you have a world bible for this version of the future? In some ways Nullhunter reminds me of Dune with a big sweeping government in space, what were some of its inspirations? In Nullhunter, you have a way of stripping exposition to its bare essentials. What’s that process like? The Silver Coin and The Sacred Damned have some gnarly monsters in them. Do you ever find yourself pulling out an old sketchbook and dusting off a design when the right script comes along? We had Pornsak Pichetshote on the show a little while back to tell us about the Horizon Experiment, and we love the concept. How’d you come aboard? Switching gears to Frankenstein: What is it about Universal’s Frankenstein that has made this particular incarnation so enduring? With Frankenstein, you take a unique approach from a child’s perspective, was this always in your pitch, or did it come up organically? Fanboy question incoming: Can we expect more Silver Coin in our future? Rapid Fire Question Round: Best sandwich? What's one thing you own that you really should throw out? Apples or oranges? What was your first comic? Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? When do you think your art style came into its own? What do you think happens when we die? Favorite action movie? Favorite smell? Least favorite smell? Favorite superhero? Most used app on your phone? If you could have dinner with any three characters you’ve created before, who would they be and why? You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it? A genre you want to make more comics in? Describe the rest of your life in 5 words?…

To start, The Dark empty Void is out September 11 and it’s your first horror, did you approach this any differently than you’ve done with previous projects? There’s psychology in this series, how much research went into this, and do you tend to research a lot for your projects? It’s obviously also about black holes, when you’re crafting stories like this do you do research on other black hole tales? Do you ever wake up and go “that’s a great idea… has someone possibly already done it?” Shifting gears to Midnight Shadows, a story in collaboration with The Midnight band, themes in this work include escapism and nostalgia, what did the first outline of this look like? Tell us about your collaboration process with the band. Did you find yourself listening to the music when scripting? Did you ever find yourself writing and a song would come on, then suddenly you’d have to change gears in the story? The art team is incredible (Stephen Thompson, Jahnoy Lindsay, Elisabetta D'Amico) with clear 80s inspirations, anything in the book that blew your expectations away? Do you see this OGN as a standalone story, or something that could continue? Anything else you’d like to plug today?…
