The New Old: Redefining Aging in the 21st Century In today's world, growing older isn't what it used to be. We now expect a longer, more active life than our parents' and grandparents' generations. This episode dives into how the stages of life have evolved over the past century and introduces two thought leaders, Chip Conley and Barbara Waxman, who have reshaped how we view aging. Covering how life expectancy has shifted from the early 1900s to now, how adolescence was discovered, and why midlife is no longer just a pit stop. We discuss "Middlescence," a new life stage that mirrors adolescence but in reverse, and how this transitional period can help us prepare for a fulfilling second half of life. Whether you're in your 40s, 50s, or 60s, this video offers empowering insights on how to embrace midlife and beyond. Discover the concept of wisdom workers, the importance of mentorship, and why aging in the 21st century is more about growing whole than growing old. 💡 Join the conversation: Share your memories of your parents' or grandparents' aging journey on the MIdlife and Beyond YouTube channel 📺 Watch the TED Talks mentioned in the video: Chip Conley and Barbara Waxman Please browse my website , where you can buy my books, and subscribe to my Newsletter for free resources.…

How is your relationship with your mother? This week, I’m talking to psychologist, Vanessa Wallace about her program, “Healing the Mother line.” Vanessa explains how growing up in a dysfunctional relationship with our mothers can cause us to adopt behaviours such as people pleasing and “good girl” syndrome, or carry deep seated anger and resentment which we then pass on to the next generation. We talk about inherited beliefs and self acceptance as a better goal than self esteem. And how by letting go of resentment and anger we can break the chain. We all deal with anxiety in different ways - for this week’s guest, Mindfulness was a life saver. Billy Lahr is an intentional living and mindfulness coach, certified personal trainer, former educator, and serial overthinker. Billy is also the host of The Mindful Midlife Crisis , a podcast for people navigating the complexities and possibilities of life’s second half. Billy spent 21 years as an educator but experienced burnout due to budding mental health concerns, social media harassment from students, and a lack of job satisfaction. In 2021, Billy left his job as dean of students in order to travel the world in search of meaningful experiences and community. Since then, he’s been a GPS for those seeking purpose and passion by helping them identify strengths, explore curiosities, synergize with their crew, and cultivate consistency, discipline, patience, and self-compassion. In this conversation, Billy talks about his experience of anxiety and overcoming it, traveling, and why finding your curiosity, your strengths and needs and your community is far more valuable to finding your purpose than “finding your passion”. Passion is something you discover as a by product of purpose rather than an end in itself. If you've enjoyed this conversation, PLEASE LIKE & SUBSCRIBE . Thank you for your support! Imagine suddenly losing everything you’ve built up in the first half of your life - marriage, friendship, mother role, home - at one fell swoop. That’s what happened to the protagonist in novelist, Tracy Bloom’s latest romantic comedy, “The Time of her Life.” This week, I’m talking to Tracy about infidelity, empty nests and some more of life’s fickle twists and turns. Having time in midlife to think about what we want from our lives now we no longer have to put others first, we talked about the Happiness Curve and how losing people we love makes us determined to live life to the full and to let go of some of the stress and striving. Writing is Tracy’s second career and she describes how, over 13 books, her characters have grown up with her, reflecting her life and interests now. We also talk about how fairytales taught us that “happily ever after” always involved a woman finding a man to love her, and just how over that old trope we are! Melina Abbott says that wild swimming, especially in the cold of winter, gives you so much more than a momentary thrill: “In menopause, you do start to feel more anxious. You start to feel more afraid, but by doing something crazy, like plunging yourself in freezing cold water, it gives you confidence because you think, wow, I did something really hard. So when I come out, especially if I've not wanted to go in, I come out and go, yay, I did a hard thing. And then I know that I can apply that in every area of my life.” The benefits of cold water swimming include: increasing immunity reducing stress improving mood being good for anxiety and depression improving circulation decreasing inflammation and improving libido The Blue Tits Chill Swimmers : https://thebluetits.co/ Connect with Melina: https://www.melinaabbott.com/ About the Midlife and Beyond Podcast Like all transitions, midlife can be messy and sad and glorious all at once, leaving many midlife women feeling rather alone and somewhat invisible. April believes that having a healthy money mindset comes from feeling you deserve to be taken care of and trusting that things will work out. She feels her early experiences being around very wealthy people in college, even though she had little money herself then, shaped her belief that large amounts of money are possible and normal. April says she has leaned on her spiritual beliefs during difficult financial times, believing she would be provided her "daily bread" and taken care of. She feels surrounding yourself with loved ones during hard times and having an attitude of gratitude makes situations less scary. April credits her spiritual mentor with the phrase "fear is false evidence appearing real" and applies that to money fears and scarcity worries. She advises visualizing large future income goals, feeling your emotional reactions, and focusing on the good feelings and purposes behind the money versus the negative reactions. April recommends spiritual practices like meditation and time in nature to relax money fears. April emphasizes that even without a spiritual belief system, having an attitude of hope versus fear and gratitude versus lack are critical for overcoming blocks around money and attraction. Award-winning British actress, director, producer and entrepreneur, Sharon Maughan developed health problems in 2009 due to a reaction to salicylates, known as salicylic overload. Suffering from symptoms including breathing problems, nasal polyps, eczema and incredibly sensitive skin, she had major surgery and was warned to make significant lifestyle changes, and drastically limit her salicylate intake or risk the condition returning within 6 months. Salicylates’ common presence in cosmetics, food, cleaning products, perfume and more, means many others have also developed reactions and salicylate build up can affect sufferers with a varying spectrum of severity over time. Women are not simply small men - we often experience medical events differently to our male counterparts. This week I’m talking to Sam Palmer, about the risks and symptoms of heart attacks. Sam explained that once we lose the protection oestrogen provides, our risk of heart disease rises. Sam listed the risk factors: Smoking Obesity Hypertension (high blood pressure) Raised Cholesterol Elevated stress levels Poor sleep Sam runs an online fitness program for women in midlife and beyond (which I can personally recommend!) and advocates raising your heart rate for 20-30 minutes regularly AND practising restorative exercise, such as yoga to calm you down. Eat the rainbow - as many different and plentiful fruits and vegetables you can fit into your day - avoid excessive salt, saturated fats and processed foods as far as possible, but eat “good” fats like avocados and nuts and plenty of protein. About Sam Sam’s career started in the NHS where she qualified as a nurse eventually working as a Sister in NeoNatal Intensive Care. An award winning running coach, she underwent further training to help her clients, eventually founding Midlife Makeover. How do you talk about growing older? This week I’m talking to author and life coach, Rebecca Ronane about how two major unexpected life events in her mid fifties made her aware of ageism for the first time, and her determination to ignore it! “Since my mid fifties, I've created my own business. I've created two podcasts, I've created two websites, I've created a networking organisation, and now I've written a book. And so if I can do it, anyone can do it.” Rebecca describes that “post 50 freedom feeling” - something she wants everyone to experience. “Forward after 50” by Rebecca Ronane is available to buy on Amazon now**: https://amzn.to/3PTjfLO You can connect with Rebecca on her website: https://www.rebeccaronane.com/ About this Podcast. Certified Health Coach, Elizabeth Sherman, talked to me recently about our distorted relationship with food that, she believes, we don’t recognise until we hit midlife. We all know we can’t eat and exercise the same way as we did at 20 or 30. Once we understand how food and exercise makes us feel we can get away from the “calories in, calories out” mentality and actually start to become more healthy. Elizabeth’s common sense approach to diet and exercise is a breath of fresh air. As is what she calls “self authority” - who decided what we should eat? Or how a middle aged woman should look? That women should be good cooks or that body hair is unfeminine? What does feminism mean today? And does the “pursuit of happiness” prevent us from living in the moment and actually being happy? Do we need to let go of relentless self improvement? I’d love to know your thoughts! Connect with Elizabeth via her website: https://elizabethsherman.com/ About this Podcast. Although happy and successful on the outside, at 45, Jen Vertanen felt lonely, sad and bitter. The only thing she hadn’t tried was leaving her husband! In this raw and honest episode, we talk about: Loneliness Childhood trauma Difficult parental relationships Gaslighting Finding different perspectives on old stories Role models What do we mean when we talk about “doing the work”? The need for human connection The challenges of lifelong relationships Wanting to be alone and without emotional responsibility Emotional Burnout How Jen and her husband came back from the brink Being role models Our hope for our daughters’ generation We discuss how we can project our own discontent onto someone we love so strongly that they almost become and effigy for everything wrong in our lives. The book is the story of how I became a pilot, but as one reviewer said, it’s about so much more than flying. It is about the way we learn as adults; a story of adapting to change with hope, optimism and courage. For me, it’s a dream come true – a dream I have worked so hard to realise, and at times thought would never happen. I kept going because I had promised myself that I would help the woman who felt as lost and dispirited as I did all those years ago, to realise there was a different path. This has been on my vision board for a very long time. Sometimes, though, that goal doesn’t happen in the time frame you had hoped, and you have to accept that and go with what life gives you. For me, it was lemons, and I couldn’t see how to make lemonade. My son was ill, I didn’t feel like a pilot, I was squarely back in the mum phase. How did I make that authentic in a book where I am telling people they can discover their best life? I t was actually working with a coach that helped me find the answer. I knew I wasn’t sorry about what I had chosen, even though I was sad I was in a situation where I had to make those choices. “Own it,” she said. And suddenly I knew the answer. We all have bad weather we have to fly around, and I had a downpour. I just had to acknowledge that, and I did so by writing an epilogue, for all the women who find that things aren’t working out quite the way they wished. A parent or a child who needs care, a body that isn’t functioning the way you would like, a job that doesn’t fulfil. Whatever it is, we all face it, some of us many times over. And I found the more compassion I gave myself, the easier it was. So that was one of the lessons I learnt, but not in the cockpit. And now I hope my book will be, as someone wrote, a paper plane that can help other women discover a different future for themselves. Biologist and self care coach, Kylie Patchett and Jo talk about their experiences of midlife depression in this raw and honest discussion. They touch on: Shame and guilt The role of Hormones The role of Trauma Trauma Responses Depression as an invitation to heal old wounds The dark side of resilience, bravery and strength Redefining the roles we play in our own lives The value of getting out of the head and into the body Somatic practices, breath work and yoga Mental Health First Aid Reducing stigma The Jim Carrey quote Kylie was thinking of is, I believe: “ Depression is your body saying f*ck you, I don’t want to be this character anymore, I don’t want to hold up this avatar that you’ve created in the world. It’s too much for me. You should think of the word ‘depressed’ as ‘deep rest.’ Your body needs to be depressed. It needs deep rest from the character that you’ve been trying to play.” Jim Carrey Books mentioned: “The Woman’s Brain” by Dr Sarah Mackay: https://amzn.to/44gPE3W “The Second Spring, The Self Care Guide to Menopause” by Kate Coddrington: https://amzn.to/3PEdL7V You can find Kylie here: https://www.kyliepatchett.com.au/ About this Podcast: Like all transitions, midlife can be messy and sad and glorious all at once, leaving many midlife women feeling rather alone and somewhat invisible. Something often happens to women around the age of 45 - we get a sense of something rising. Whether you frame that as "wisdom", or "spiritual awakening" or something else, it's fascinating to explore what it could mean. In this, the 100th episode of The Midlife Movement Podcast, Jo is talking to author, Stephanie Raffelock, whose latest book, "Creatrix Rising" argues that we need to consign the male-imagined "crone" archetype and replace her with the Creatrix - the power-full, dynamic feminine responsible for a surge in creativity and energy. This is a stage in life when women transform "from quiet strength to a resounding voice". You can buy this fascinating book via Stephanie's website , where you can also find out more about the author, who herself embodies the beautiful spirit of the Creatrix. I asked menopause fitness expert, Sam Palmer, of Midlife Makeover to answer some questions about menopause asked by women in The Midlife Movement community. We covered a multitude of issues: Sex, Mind and the Menopause Documentary with Davina McCall Forgetfulness: 14.45 Libido: 18.45 Sleep: 28.45 HRT (and whether suitable if you've had cancer) 31.51 How to get the best from your doctor 33.25 Leg pains 36.45 Social life 40.00 I am so grateful to Sam for bringing her brand of down to earth, common sense advice to the conversation. As she so rightly says, we shouldn't buy into the gloom and doom about menopause - there is so much we can do to help ourselves. And it's called a "pause" for a reason - this is time to take a step back and reflect on our lives. Check out Sam's website, Midlife Makeover , for a range of programs to help you deal with the challenges of menopause. And if you need help to work out who you want to be and how you want to spend your life beyond menopause, book a Rediscovery call with me to see if I can help you with my Transform your Midlife Program of 121 coaching. I had the great pleasure of interviewing author, Laura Davis, on the publication of her searing memoir, The Burning Light of Two Stars: A Mother-Daughter Story. In this wide ranging conversation, we talk about mother-daughter relationships, healing, caring for an elderly relative and childhood sexual abuse, an experience that led Laura to co-author the ground breaking book on recovered memory with Ellen Bass, The Courage to Heal. Laura’s new memoir, The Burning Light of Two Stars: A Mother-Daughter Story is the riveting story of her embattled relationship with her mother Temme, their determination to love one another, and the dramatic and surprising collision course they ended up on at the end of Temme’s life. For the millions of readers of Laura’s first book, The Courage to Heal, The Burning Light of Two Stars is both prequel and sequel, revealing in page-turning, intimate detail how Laura reconciled with the mother who betrayed her, and came to care for her in her final days. Having lost her confidence and losing sight of herself in the midst of work, caring for an elderly parent and sons with extra needs, she knew she needed to do something for herself, something she had always wanted to do. In 2022 Margaret will embark upon an interesting journey - sometimes alone, sometimes with friends and relatives. She wants you to know that you too can do that “thing” you always wanted to do. Like all transitions, midlife can be messy and sad and glorious all at once, leaving many midlife women feeling rather alone and somewhat invisible. But what does this transition we are experiencing lead to? I'm Jo Blackwell, a photographer, author and coach for women who want more from their lives post 50, and I'm here to remind you that if we manage our health and embrace it, growing older can lead to one of the greatest periods of growth and transformation of our lives. The Midlife Movement was created to change minds about midlife and growing older, one story at a time. Because we only become invisible when when we stop seeing ourselves. email jo@joblackwell.co.uk to take part in the podcast or suggest guests. Jojo is celebrating her 6th year of sobriety. She had a wake-up call at 53 after suffering a stroke but remained in denial about her dependency on alcohol. Being reunited with her sister after 34 years was a life changing intervention. She finally acknowledged the dysfunctional relationship she had with alcohol and set out on her path to recovery. She is now a transformational coach, author and motivational speaker who has transformed her world of, in her words, shame and pain into one of purpose and joy.
