On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. From milestone celebrations across the country to the powerful words that stopped Kirby in her tracks, this week’s shows gave us all the reasons to celebrate. Bo was in full party mode when Amy called to shout out the 20-year anniversary of DC 7017 in Wintersville, Ohio. Kelly from Store 197 in Macomb, Illinois, successfully solved Kirby’s riddle in You Don’t Know My Name. Chris’ good mood took a small dip when no wan was able to guess the movie, until Danny from Store 1459 in Indianapolis, Indiana, gave him a new hope. But it was John’s shoutout to his fiancé and fellow associate, Angie, from Store 1294 in Marion, Indiana, that totally took the cake. Listen now!…
In a galaxy, far, far away, Chris couldn’t fool listeners with his Take On Me question, when three associates called in with the correct answer. But the mic-drop moment came from David at Store 520 in Winder, Georgia, who gave himself a shoutout for simply showing up to work that day. Bo named two Associates of the Day when Justin and Josh from Store 151 in Mcalester, Oklahoma, called in first. And Kirby was all aglow when she took a moment to honor Charlene, from Club 6651 in Catonsville, Maryland, who achieved her college-degree dreams thanks to the Live Better U program. Discover why Kirby says the best is yet to come, Bo believes the wheel is within reach and more on this week’s show!…
There’s always something to celebrate with our DJs, and this week was no exception. Barb from Store 4323 in Kankakee, Illinois, called Chris to send long-distance birthday greetings to Skyler at Store 3262 in Cambridge, Ohio. And Adah from Store 86 in Springfield, Missouri, called Kirby to say happy birthday to her daughter, Sarah, at Store 1141 in Greenfield, Indiana. Listen now to join the party!…
From houseplants to forest bathing, Bo, Kirby and Chris ease into 2023 with a peek inside the wellness world. Bo shouted out some incredible associates in Milestone Minute. Kirby reminds us that we don’t have to go full Snow White to reap the benefits of taking a walk in the woods (or a stroll around the block). Antonio from Walmart World and Andre the Dancing Cart Pusher bring big energy to The Chris Show, as do Chris’ clues for a classic 1980s throwback. Press play for these highlights – and more New Year’s inspiration – from the Walmart World Radio team!…

From Connecticut to Idaho (w/a stopover in Purdue, Indiana, home of the Boilermakers) Chris is riding the shoutout express all week long, proving that the holidays really are the perfect time to shout out the love! Spoiler alert: Chris packed plenty of puns for the trip. Kirby recognizes the team at Store 2496 in Boone, North Carolina, for the ways they’re Sparking Good in their community, then continues to spread joy with a Before You Go reminder that the people we meet – and the stories they share – can expand horizons and hearts. Bo celebrates three outstanding Walmart milestones. He also stumps everyone with his Impossible Question: 45% of families say they have done this activity together. Think you know the answer? Tune in and dial up the volume; this week’s podcast is full steam ahead!…
The holidays are a time of special moments and memories, and food plays a huge part. We treasure those delicious Thanksgiving and Christmas meals with our favorite dishes and family traditions. For the Season 3 finale of the Huddle, I talked to John Laney, who runs Walmart’s U.S. food business. John talked about some of his favorite items, and how HIS family does holiday meals for their family of 10! John and I were especially proud to share how Walmart was able to strip the inflation out of an entire basket of holiday food items, so our customers can serve this year's big meals at last year’s price! I hope you'll enjoy this episode, and I hope you'll come to Walmart for all your holiday needs. Thank you so much for tuning in this year. Happy holidays!…
Bo’s Impossible Question leaves us auto-ly delighted, as does this head-scratching stat: 40% of people say they read a book while driving. Hmmm. Does that make them wheel read? Chris takes his show – and Bo! – on the road, and the pair winds up in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. Their on-air celebration of Store 3564's Grand Reopening is one for the books, especially when Store Manager Richard shares the story of his 23 years at Walmart. Spoiler: it has a heartwarming holiday plot twist. Kirby takes a nostalgic drive down Sesame Street with You Don’t Know My Name, and the whole radio squad gets together for a very merry edition of 10 in 10. Fasten your seatbelts; this week's wrap up is gonna jumpstart your morning commute!…
Bo raises a mug to National Cappuccino Day before serving up a triple shot of motivation during a chat with Pam, Deb and Sandy from Pittsfield, Illinois, Store 480, who are each celebrating 40 years with the company. Detective Product dishes clues fit for a Thanksgiving feast. A letter from a pilot has Kirby reaching for the tissues inside the Group Chat. We’re all ready to lace up our sneakers for Coach Mike at Store 1931 in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and Chris’ new fixation on green bean casserole-flavored sparkling water has us rethinking our holiday H2O strategy. Don’t miss these highlights (and more) as the radio team delivers a cornucopia of holiday flavors during this week’s radio wrap up!…
Chris talks office time wasters (hint: ⛈️), the perfect cereal-milk ratio and the best-selling album of all time. It’s a standing ovation for Steve, from Store 130 in Muskogee, Oklahoma, with his double shoutout to boss Sandy and wife Starla, followed by birthday kudos for his daughter’s birthday. With the help of Stacey, from Store 3741 in Atlanta, Georgia, Bo puts the “wraps” on Halloween and starts unpacking for the holidays. But, he really gets “on a roll” with his impossible question: “The average person may use 57 of these a day.” The guesses that follow will have you 🤣 (and no, “emojis” is not the right answer). Kirby turns up the volume on the Group Chat, especially when a case of mistaken feline identity in Des Moines, Iowa, has her asking all the questions. Kaylee from Store 3153 in Omaha, Nebraska, shoots for the moon with her guess inside the game of You Don't Know My Name, but Craig from Store 2334 in Lancaster, Ohio, brings it back down to earth with his answer. Tune in for these stories and more out-of-this-world shoutouts with this week’s highlights from Kirby, Chris and Bo! 🪐…
With Halloween fast approaching during last week’s shows, Kirby learned that the top three most-searched costumes were a dinosaur, witch and Spider Man. After sharing trending news in Group Chat, she swung over to the phone and talked with Austin from Dallas, Texas, who gave a special shoutout to his girlfriend, Samaya, for the KG Birthday Club. Speaking of webs, AJ from the Global Tech Information Security Team joined Kirby to talk about phishing and how to stay safe from cyber villains as we closed out Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Finally, our very own superheroes celebrated huge anniversaries in Milestone Minute! Congratulations to Jeanne from Store 2158 in Northborough, Massachusetts; Kimberly from Store 2427 in Dallas, Texas; and Teresa from DC 8234 in Searcy, Arkansas, on 25 years with Walmart. Get caught up on the best of the week with Kirby Gwen & Friends.…
