In the South, food and music go hand in hand. They define much of what we think of as Southern culture, and they say a lot about our past, our present, and our future. Each week, Sid Evans, Editor in Chief of Southern Living, sits down with musicians, chefs, and other Southern icons to hear the stories of how they grew up, what inspires them, and why they feel connected to the region. Through honest conversations, Sid explores childhood memories, the family meals they still think about, and the intersection of food and music in their lives. Always surprising, always engaging, Biscuits & Jam is a celebration of the South—and the people who are moving it forward every day. New episodes every Tuesday.

This is a mash up of different experiences and observations over the last few weeks. The words, which I wrote down as a reminder for what to discuss on this week’s episode and didn’t intend to be the title – works out well. Enjoy – the last few weeks, although not ideal, turned out to be pretty awesome in most aspects! You can view the live recording of today’s episode on our YouTube Channel Here! How’d we get here? The Ultra Dad’s Podcast came from an idea Cindy Shane created. Well, she planted the idea in our head after listening to the first time Bryan was on the RFP Podcast in May 2020. There have many times over the years when we speak on the phone or in person the “we should be recording this” line comes out. Well, here we are jumping in with both feet, like we tend to do, sharing with you our perspectives on life. Let’s be candid – we are not perfect, and we fail often. Our favorite term to use is “it’s not ideal” and there have been countless times we’ve uttered, “a plan is great until you are punched in the face;” – but we do laugh a lot, at ourselves and/or each other mostly 😊. All that said, there are those brief moments where things tend to fall into place and we, somehow, make it to that finish line – as ultrarunners yes, but most importantly has husbands, fathers, friends, and human beings. We wanted to share those imperfections and those incredible moments that we’ve been fortunate enough to experience together over the last 30+ years. So, sit back, grab a cold one, and hopefully this will be another time where things fall into place. Bryan & Mike

The title of todays episode comes from the book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck. If you are not familiar with her, she has studied the differences between the growth & fixed mindset; essentially how we can change from one to the other. This particular part of the book had talked about sustaining and practicing change, growth and improving vs. there being a “silver bullet” or that “one big thing” that makes the difference. Have some firsthand examples that were pretty funny too 😊! At least from my perspective. Simple intro – today’s episode inspired by: From John C. Maxwell’s Leadership Gold Ten Characteristics of a Growth Environment: Others are ahead of you. You are continually challenged. Your focus is forward. The atmosphere is affirming. You are often out of your comfort zone. You wake up excited. Failure is not your enemy. Others are growing. People desire change. Today’s episode fell into place nicely. I’ve been needing some change. I am speaking for Robin too since this is something we’ve been talking about for a long time. Full transparency – we’ve let our nutritional commitments lack over the last several months. Yeah – we’ve done our quarterly cleanses and did well with them but as soon as they were over, and this has felt like for 18 months, we’d go back to old behaviors. We’ve known what to do but our will, and our desire, weren’t strong enough to keep us on that track. Well, when you make a commitment to do some scary shit – that tends to change behaviors……or it better 😊. Today we dig into that, and it is perfectly centered around this quote by David O. McKay below: “The greatest battles of life are fought out in the silent chambers of the soul.” The RFP Ultra Dad’s Podcast is sponsored by Time on the Trails – delivering you a customized experience out on the trails in Arizona and beyond. As I am wrapping up Thinking for a Change by John C. Maxwell, I came across another couple parts that I am compelled to share. I guess these last few episodes have become a book review 😊. No worries, I believe all these lessons are great to pass along to see if and where they may resonate. This particular section is a quote by Thane Yost: “The will to win is worthless if you do not have the will to prepare.” I read this and my mind went to ultra-trail marathon’s/running and training - or “preparing” for them. Having the “will to prepare” for a race I don’t think had ever entered my mind. It was just the thing I felt I must do if I wanted to complete an ultramarathon. Having the “will” to train wasn’t a concept for me, I just ran. However, in a race, I’ve felt and thought about that will to continue, to keep moving forward, like life! There is something, that why, passion, purpose – however we want to classify it, that keeps us moving forward, no matter how much pain we may be in or how much hardship we are facing, there is that will. But the will to prepare/train? Not a feeling – conscientiously at least. Yes, during training periods, or preparing for a life mission, we deal with the same struggles and pain caves that surface in an ultramarathon. Yes, there are days we don’t want to get up and do the things we must do and honor our commitments. But we do – there is that will to prepare. For me however, it is the race – that why I guess, rather than a will – is it the same thing??? Last week I started reading Thinking for a Change, by John C. Maxwell. This one excerpt got me thinking a bit and it is the topic for today’s episode; let’s dive right in: “The younger you are, the more likely you will give your attention to many things. The title of today’s episode comes from several weeks back, as I was gathering some thoughts for another Journal Journey. It has been some time since I put one of those out & will get back to that shortly. As I was reviewing my journal at that time, the quotes below resonated with me but I wanted to do them in a spoken, rather than written, forum. Recently started rereading Stephen Covey’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It has been several years since I dove into this one and not sure what compelled me to pick it up again, but I guess the timing of the messages I’ve been receiving were in line. The nuggets below are certainly resonated with considering many of the concerning things happening throughout our country. Much of these circumstances, and that within my own personal life, keep me repeating this same characteristic in my head, saying it to myself, and in conversations with others!! “We need more personal accountability.” Hence the topic of today’s messages, “It Is You.” In today’s episode, we talk about the above thoughts and a few of these nuggets from the book. “Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions. We have the initiative & responsibility to make things happen.” What “things” are we allowing to control us? We get to “proactively choose” this! Are we “reacting” to our circumstances or “choosing to proactively respond” to them? Sharing some final thoughts and nuggets from Never Finished by David Goggins. Today’s episode is less about “performance” and more about the work and effort we get to put into ourselves each day. No too much on the intro but here are the quotes that resonated with me……thanks for tuning in! “Pride in my performance:” “Not half-assing” “Incremental progress is still progress.” “One step is all that is required to take the next one.” The RFP Ultra Dad’s Podcast is sponsored by Time on the Trails – delivering you a customized experience out on the trails in Arizona and beyond. Recently started reading Never Finished by David Goggins. My wife bought it for me as a Christmas present and I tore right into it. Today’s episode goes into the particular excerpt below and how it directly resonated with my past and my continuing pursuit of being that better version of myself. “I was carrying a boulder as big as the world on my back just trying to get to the other side of the darkness that was chasing me down. I was terrified that if I stopped getting better, if I gave myself a break from any of it, all my insecurities and innate laziness would get the drop on me again.” “Anytime I felt physically exhausted or mentally zapped I pictured my 24-year-old self glaring at me with a big smile on his face a smile that said, ‘I’m still here loser I am who you really are and I’m not going anywhere.’” “I looked at each day as an opportunity to mine the negativity that had colonized my brain, and became fascinated by the power of the mind, and how we can work for us and against us.” The RFP Ultra Dad’s Podcast is sponsored by Time on the Trails – delivering you a customized experience out on the trails in Arizona and beyond. Over the holiday break I was reading Steve Magness’ book, Do Hard Things. In one chapter, he referenced Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning. Both great books and linked in the notes here. The nugget that resonated with me by Viktor Frankl was how he described finding fulfillment as “creating, experiencing, and suffering.” Those that read Man’s Search for Meaning, knows that Mr. Frankl had accomplished all three. As we embark on 2023 those words got me reflecting on last year and looking into who I would like to become in twelve months. That’s what we did into on this episode. Last week I had the good fortune to attend a leadership webinar. Most of the content shared didn’t resonate much with me. Like most of these events, books, or other opportunities to learn and grow, I always get one nugget that I walk away with. This one was from Ed Mylett. He was talking about personal growth and how as we transition how that provides us the chance to guide others. Today’s episode digs into that and some other great nuggets from the linked Tom Bilyeu podcast here! This topic has come up over the years, being in a position to train our kids to leave the house and become great adults. My wife and I set that process in motion, as a vision we wanted to realize, many years ago. First however, I needed to set the tone, by become a better adult myself. That was the initial step in working to be a better husband, father, and human being. Listening to the below Gary Vaynerchuk video last week, reminded me again on how that all started, with accountability. This episode discusses that and a great zoo reference from the link 😊. Also, much thanks to Aravaipa Running (Jangover Night Runs - Aravaipa Running), who continues to put on great events and finds the best volunteers and staff – appreciate you all. Pretty epic pictures taken from a run this past Saturday morning. The first on is the moon setting! That’s right, the moon setting and part of the inspiration for today’s topic. The other came from a mentoring conversation I had with another athlete getting ready to do their first event and from this video and quotes below: The Participant: Understanding the 100 mile distance - https://youtu.be/8gzc6ta6bVw Dylan Harris - “Are you interested in running 100 miles or committed to it?” “Find a way to get it done, get myself to a place that I haven’t been before, a place that holds the unknows and see if I quit or keep moving forward.” “Once you decide to run 100 miles you are not in charge anymore. The people in charge are your former self and your future self. So during the race when it gets really hard and you don’t want to keep going, you don’t want to eat, or basically life is awful, just remember your former self decided to do this and your future self wants you to do this, so let those two be the guides.” – Eric Senseman Sure – it may be centered on ultrarunning but these are metaphors for life and lessons that can be used for any type of endeavor – any mission where we try to test our limits and see what we are made of. RFP Podcast Episode #262 – Ultra Dad Session #70: Unexpected Troubles The pictures included with this episode were taken 4 days apart from one another on opposite ends of the coast. One in the Arizona desert the other on the Gulf Coast of Florida. When I looked after recently taken the last one, I thought about change, and how fast it can happen. How quickly we can be driven to pivot and how the unexpected can great situations that are not ideal. There is a great quote by Mark Twain that I read, almost each day, “I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.” Today’s episode discusses, at least from my perspective and what I am beginning to become acutely aware of, is it seems that when we don’t plan and circumstances that are not ideal come up, we tend to navigate them much smoother, calmer, and better. This, verses spending so much time thinking about, planning and yes, worrying about how to handle a situation that in all reality, never happens! Bryan & Mike…

Another solo session this week and appreciate y’all for the patience. Thanks to all for the continued support. We are just settling back in from taking our eldest, Isabella, to college. It was an exciting, at times emotional, fun, and growing experience, for all of us. It was also a bit exhausting putting 3400 miles on the car and driving for 24 hours, twice. There were nuggets that surfaced, laughs that were had, and memories created as we continue to march forward on our journeys. Now Isabella gets to do it and design who she wants to become. Hope y’all enjoy the ride. The RFP Ultra Dad’s Podcast is sponsored by Time on the Trails – delivering you a customized experience out on the trails in Arizona and beyond. Another solo session this week and appreciate y’all for the patience. Thanks to all for the continued support. This weeks episode was inspired again by, Happy Mind, Happy Life: The New Science of Mental Well-Being by Rangan Chatterjee. It was also driven by our family coming off of a vacation last week and the adjustment getting back to reality. I’ve struggle in the past with going from such a high and great experiences with vaca digging into life and responsibilities. I had thought about how great things were and the, “I was at the beach at this time last week,” thoughts as I was banging away at sales calls or in meetings. What I learned from the book is that we have the gift, each day, to take little daily vacations! Hopefully today’s episode helps you find your daily breakaway and you also are blessed with taking much more time away with family and friends! Another solo session this week and grateful to get back-to-back ones out. Thanks to all for the continued support. This weeks episode was inspired by another book, Happy Mind, Happy Life: The New Science of Mental Well-Being by Rangan Chatterjee. A few nuggets to list here that drove me to put this out and we go into some of the weeds with a little dash of our perspective. “Content – being at peace with life and decisions.” “Control – being able to make meaningful decisions. Not being overwhelmed.” “Alignment – are who you want to be and who you are actually being the same?” The RFP Ultra Dad’s Podcast is sponsored by Time on the Trails – delivering you a customized experience out on the trails in Arizona and beyond. Today’s episode is another solo mission and a compilation of from several resources over the last couple of weeks. Don’t really need to put too much into this outline, the show notes below and title above sum it quite well. Enjoy folks and have a great 4th of July weekend! John Maxwell’s Go for Gold: Amazon.com: Go for Gold: Inspiration to Increase Your Leadership Impact eBook : Maxwell, John C.: Kindle Store “The only true measure of success is the ratio between what we might have been and what we have become. Success comes as a result of growing our potential” “Potential is God’s gift to us and what we do with it is our gift to Him.” “We have limitless potential, yet too few ever try to reach it.” “We can do anything, but we can’t do everything.” “Many people let everyone around them decide their agenda in life. As a result, they never really dedicate themselves to their purpose in life.” Surround Yourself With People That Push You To Be Better (leadershipfirst.net) “Surround yourself with people that push you to be better. Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions, especially during these unprecedented times. According to Mark Twain, small people always do that, but the greats make you feel that you, too, can become great.” “Being around like-minded people will help you reach your goals and, in the process, allow you to become extraordinary.” From Impact Theory Podcast: Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu: The 5 Habits BILLIONAIRES Run Daily!
