Throughout the scriptures we see God desiring to have a relationship with mankind and dwell with them. It may be hard for us to fathom that God wants to be our God and have us as his people. God’s people in the Old Testament did a terrible job fulfilling what God desired and we read of their destruction. But we also read about a new people that God would create. Books like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Zechariah all point to this new people becoming what God always had in mind from the beginning. I would like for us to begin this series by looking at two passages that show a contrast between God’s people in the OT and God’s people in the NT. Isaiah 29:13–14 (ESV) — 13 And the Lord said: “Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men, 14 therefore, behold, I will again do wonderful things with this people, with wonder upon wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden.” Ezekiel 36:25–27 (ESV) — 25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. 26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. In the texts we will study this week my goal is to see how the NT writers say that we are this renewed people with a new heart. Tonight we find that Peter describes us as God’s people in 1 Peter 2. 1 Peter 2:9–10 (ESV) — 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.…

Preach The Word (2 Timothy 3:10-4:5) 48:51

March 2, 2019 It is great to be here with you and to bring you lessons from God’s word. I appreciate your interest in spiritual things and your willingness to test out someone who is still in the midst of training. Tonight I would like to explain why I have chosen to go into this training program that I am currently in and I would like to give you an idea of what my work will look like when I get out of the training program. I have had quite a few people question why I would go into a training program like this and also why it is a 2 year training program. The best explanation I can think to give for this is found in 2 Timothy. Let’s get an overview of what is there before I explain what I have been doing and what I plan to do when I begin to preach full time. Young Preacher Training In the book of 2 Timothy Paul lays out his purpose in 1:6 as trying to get Timothy to “fan into flame the gift of God.” Timothy is a younger preacher who has served under Paul for many years. As the book goes on Paul urges Timothy to be strong and willing to teach in the midst of suffering and he uses himself as an example. When we get to chapter 3:10 we have the beginning of one final exhortation. Listen to what Paul tells him first in verses 10-14. 2 Timothy 3:10–14 (ESV) — 10 You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it…
