Thom Shea served 23 years as a Navy SEAL. During his military career, he served in three wars, ultimately leading a team of Navy SEALs into Afghanistan in 2009 where he earned a Silver Star, Bronze Star with Valor, Army Commendation with Valor, and his second Combat Action Medal. Thom was also a SEAL Instructor in BUD/S and was hand-selected to be the Officer in Charge of the famed SEAL Sniper course. After retiring from the Navy, Thom went on to found Unbreakable Leadership, a learning and development company that helps people lead during chaos and achieve new levels of performance. He and he is the author of the bestselling books "Unbreakable: A Navy Seal’s Way of Life” and, his latest release, “Three Simple Things: Leading During Chaos.” In this episode, Thom and I discuss what drove his desire for war and his yearning for combat, and the mindset that led him to overcome four failed attempts to make it through SEAL training and graduate BUD/S Class 207. We also talk about his book "Unbreakable," originally written as a journal of his last deployment in Afghanistan so that his children would have a record of what made him who he was should he not make it back home, however, his musings on war and his outlook on life evolved into a cannon of principles on what made him excel as a warrior and a high achiever, ultimately penning 13 lessons on how to live life to the fullest of one's potential. We also explore Internal Dialogue as a central theme of Thom's Unbreakable philosophy and how controlling the language we use both in our self-talk and in our interactions with others will ultimately shape who we become. Along the way, we also delve into Thom's thoughts on how damaging it is to use words (or invest in concepts like) like hope and belief, his views on commitment as the avoidance of living in an excuse driven world, and why men who survive and win have a "need to be needed." Thom also gives us a preview of his new book "Three Simple Things," which grew out of his process for training people to master 5 key areas of their life (Body, Intellect, Spirituality, Wealth, and Relationships) using three powerful precepts. In this episode of The Alpha Human Podcast, host Lawrence Rosenberg interviews Dean Stott, a former British Special Forces operator, record-breaking adventurer, and author of the book "Relentless: From Special Operations to World Record Breaker." As one of the first British Army Special Forces soldiers to pass the Special Boat Service (SBS) selection process (a path traditionally reserved for Royal Marines), Dean’s story is a testament to determination, persistence, and an unrelenting pursuit of excellence. Throughout the conversation, we delve into the mindset, traits, and qualities that have defined Dean’s remarkable journey ... from his time in Special Forces to his transition into the high-stakes world of private security, where he earned renown for his expertise in executing complex evacuations in countries facing civil war, military coups, and societal collapse ... including single-handedly orchestrating the evacuation of the Canadian embassy during the Libyan crisis and aiding in the extraction of over 1,000 individuals during the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. Additionally, we explore Dean's ability to lead with humility, his mastery of transforming fear into focused confidence through relentless preparation, and his remarkable capacity to harness negativity as fuel for success. The interview also dives into Dean’s record-breaking 14,000-mile cycling journey along the Pan-American Highway, where his relentless mindset and dedication to a higher purpose (raising £1 Million for mental health) fueled him to overcome extreme terrain and temperatures to become the first person to ever cycle the Pan Am in under 100 days. In this episode of the Alpha Human Podcast, Lawrence Rosenberg interviews Master Sergeant Darrell Utt, a retired Green Beret with a storied 26-year military career. Darrell shares insights from his book, "Grit to Glory: A Green Beret’s Journey from West Virginia to Baghdad," which chronicles his path from humble beginnings to leading an elite Special Forces team in high-stakes combat. During the discussion, Darrell reflects on overcoming the obstacles of not embodying the Special Forces archetype and conquering imposter syndrome, as he didn’t fit the traditional mold of a Green Beret. Drawing from his austere and hard-scrabble upbringing in West Virginia, he credits his parents and early mentors for instilling in him the toughness and adaptability that became cornerstones of his success, enabling him to rise and transform himself into an elite warrior ... proving that true excellence transcends conventional frameworks and stereotypes. Darrell recounts how his unconventional path to becoming a Green Beret was shaped by childhood struggles, mentorship from figures like his high school football coach (a former Green Beret) and his relentless work ethic. Despite not fitting the stereotypical image of a Special Forces warrior, Darrell recounts how through sheer grit and mental toughness (inspired by lessons from his humble and hard-scrabble upbringing) he rose through the ranks to lead his own team of Green Berets into urban combat in Baghdad, Iraq. The conversation also delves into Darrell’s philosophy on leadership, innovation, and adaptability - his "Grit Code" ... principles for overcoming challenges and pursuing excellence, including "Courage is Contagious," "Calm Breeds Calm," "Control What You Can Control" and "Eradicate Arrogance," among other maxims for success. He also discusses the importance of "Embracing Innovation," especially in high-stakes, high-risk environments, and how he encouraged his team to think unconventionally to achieve victory on the battlefield. As he transitions to civilian life, Darrell also opens up about the challenges of recalibrating after being addicted to the adrenaline, high stakes, and raw survival instinct of combat ... a place where he thrived in chaos, transcended fear, and felt invincible, courageous, and free. Darrell’s journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance, responsibility, and embracing challenges head-on. His “Grit Code,” developed through years of extraordinary experiences, offers universal lessons for anyone striving to achieve greatness. Beyond his 23-year military career in combat operations across Colombia, Iraq, and Afghanistan, he is an accomplished playwright and actor who created the stage play "Last Out: Elegy of a Green Beret," shedding light on veterans' untold stories and the profound cost of war on military families. He's also the bestselling author of "Operation Pineapple Express," which details a grassroots mission to rescue Afghan elite forces allies during the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. In addition, Scott founded Rooftop Leadership to train corporate leaders, law enforcement, and military teams, as well as The Heroes Journey, a nonprofit helping veterans and first responders find their voice as they transition to civilian life. During their conversation, Lawrence and Scott explore Scott's new book "Nobody Is Coming to Save You: A Green Beret's Guide to Getting Big Sh*t Done." They delve into the importance of connection and rapport by understanding the human operating system, that humans are meaning-seeking, emotional, and social storytellers who struggle. They also delve into "the churn" as a modern challenge, a metaphor for the forces that divide and isolate people, eroding trust and fueling fear and anger. Scott shares insights on how to find meaning and purpose through "leaving tracks," and how to use storytelling and narrative competence (the ability to influence and inspire others), as potent leadership tools that help ensure we get big things done. Sgt. Eipper spent 16 years as a member of the Wichita Falls, Texas SWAT team, gaining extensive experience as a SWAT sniper and serving as the head of the department’s Gang Task Force Unit. Throughout the conversation, Sgt. Eipper delves into the qualities and traits essential for excelling in the complex and demanding role of a sniper in law enforcement, as well as the profound psychological challenges that can arise following deadly encounters, offering a glimpse into the mental and emotional landscape that police and soldiers must navigate when using lethal force. Sgt. Eipper also shares his insights on the intersection of faith and duty as outlined in his book, "Jesus Christ on Killing," and explores the scriptural interpretations of taking a life, examining various biblical passages to understand what the bible articulates about the morality and ethics of killing, and how scripture provides a framework for understanding the morality and legality of lethal force, emphasizing the conditions under which such actions are considered permissible by God. This discussion reflects on the biblical narratives and commandments that discuss the sanctity of innocent lives while also acknowledging the realities of justice and protection that sometimes necessitate and justify taking a life under certain circumstances, such as self-defense, war, and capital punishment. Additionally, Sgt. Eipper addresses the fundamental misunderstanding of Christ's role as the Lamb of God and His commandment to "turn the other cheek," challenging the belief that Jesus is a pacifist. In this episode of the Alpha Human Podcast, Lawrence Rosenberg talks with Jay Feldman, host of The Energy Balance Podcast, who offers a deep dive into the bioenergetic perspective on health, challenging prevailing dietary paradigms, particularly the skepticism around high-carbohydrate diets and the necessity of carbohydrates. Feldman methodically deconstructs the myths that carbohydrates are non-essential and that our ancestors had limited access to them, presenting evidence that ancient diets were likely rich in carbohydrates, which are crucial for optimal metabolic health and energy production. Feldman also tackles the misconceptions about sugar and fructose, providing a nuanced explanation of their metabolic effects and disputing the common belief that sugars are inherently harmful. He emphasizes the body's ability to utilize carbohydrates efficiently, arguing against the notion that high carbohydrate intake inevitably leads to insulin resistance or metabolic disorders. Additionally, the conversation explores the metabolic implications of low-carb and ketogenic diets, underscoring the bioenergetic view that carbohydrates are the body's preferred energy source. Feldman argues that this preference is not just about survival but about thriving, with optimal energy production and metabolic health being the key benefits. You should not disregard or delay in obtaining medical advice for any medical condition you may have, and you should seek the assistance of a healthcare professional for any such conditions, and always inform your doctor of any changes you make, or are thinking about making to your lifestyle. In this episode of The Alpha Human Podcast, Lawrence talks with renowned fitness expert Clark Bartram about his personal journey with prostate cancer. Clark's approach to the disease is unconventional, focusing on alternative treatments instead of traditional methods like surgery or radiation, with a battle plan that centers on four key objectives: slow the cancer, stop the cancer, destroy the cancer, and heal the root cause behind the cancer's occurrence. Clark also shares his perspective on testosterone deprivation therapy, commonly used in prostate cancer treatment and emphasizes the importance of not letting your anxiety dictate your treatment path. He encourages those facing a similar diagnosis to take time to research, understand their condition, and make informed decisions rather than rushing into treatments out of fear. Clark's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of self-advocacy and personalized care in the face of health challenges, and his experience offers valuable insights and inspiration for those facing prostate cancer. In this episode of The Alpha Human Podcast, Lawrence Rosenberg talks with Morley Robbins, founder of the Root Cause Protocol, on iron overload and its connection to cancer. Robbins delves into the history and misconceptions surrounding iron and its perceived deficiency in human health leading to a societal fixation on iron supplementation. Robbins challenges this narrative, highlighting the abundance of iron in the environment and the human body's natural ability to regulate iron through copper. Robbins asserts that many health issues, including cancer, are due to a lack of bioavailable copper and an excess of unregulated iron. He describes how the body's metabolism, particularly in cancer cells, shifts from using oxygen (oxidative phosphorylation) to fermenting sugar (glycolysis) due to a copper deficiency. This shift, known as the Warburg Effect, indicates a lack of bioavailable copper necessary for iron regulation and oxygen metabolism. The conversation also touches on the role of liver impairment and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which Robbins attributes to an imbalance of copper, retinol, and iron. He emphasizes the importance of retinol (animal-based vitamin A) in maintaining copper balance and its critical role in overall health. Robbins challenges conventional wisdom on supplements like vitamin D and ascorbic acid, arguing that they can impede the body's natural mineral balance. https://therootcauseprotocol.com/ "Copper deficiency will favor glycolysis and cell proliferation": Role of Copper on Mitochondrial Function and Metabolism https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmolb.2021.711227/full The Disturbed Iron Phenotype of Tumor Cells and Macrophages in Renal Cell Carcinoma Influences Tumor Growth https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7139531/ Altered Iron Metabolism and Impact in Cancer Biology, Metastasis, and Immunology https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/oncology/articles/10.3389/fonc.2020.00476/full Copper deficiency increases iron absorption in the rat https://journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10.1152/ajpgi.00509.2002 Association between blood copper and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease according to sex https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0261561420304982…
