Tanya Halliday, PhD, RD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health, Kinesiology, and Recreation at the University of Utah. Her research focuses on appetite and food-intake regulation in response to lifestyle interventions such as dietary restriction and exercise. Currently, she is investigating how type of exercise (e.g., aerobic vs resistance) influences hormonal and behavior indices of appetite regulation, and mechanisms underlying response variation in body mass regulation with exercise. Another current area of research focus is on development of effective weight loss maintenance strategies. Dr. Halliday is also examining how sex as a biological variable, may influence the appetitive responses to energy deficits elicited through both increased exercise energy expenditure and caloric restriction. She received her PhD in Clinical Physiology and Metabolism from Virginia Tech in 2016, where her research focused on exercise and dietary interventions for the prevention and treatment of obesity and related cardiometabolic conditions. She is also a Registered Dietitian, having completed her BS in Dietetics in 2010 at the University of Wyoming, and her Dietetic Internship through the University of Houston in 2011. We have a conversation about the change in obesity rates over the last 50-60 years and what the current epidemiology states regarding the impact on populations and general health. We discuss traditional energy balance teachings and whether a “calorie is a calorie” as it relates to weight loss. Professor Halliday discusses GLP-1 medications, what problems they meant to solve and for which candidates and explains the side effects. We talk about the efficacy of exercise for improved health and weight loss and whether wearable technology can assist health outcomes. He's been an advisor and consultant to the Breaking 2 and INEOS projects with Eluid Kipchoge and professional endurance athletes including Paula Radcliff. Professor Jones gives his understanding of the evidence of the performance effect of the so called “super shoes” and whether they explain the recent pro marathon runner excess performance and if so, by how much. Amateur marathon runners may find interesting our exchange about the Boston Marathon and how it is getting harder to get into, and what amateur marathoners must do to enhance performance in order to qualify and get into the Boston Marathon today. Professor Jones gives his perspective on the popularized notion that when it comes to marathon training “volume is king” and if not, what would be the alternative. We talk about distance runners that are getting older, and how Professor Jones recommends changing training, if at all, for those looking to remain competitive. Finally, we talk about science and evidence-based nutrition protocol throughout the training cycle and pre-race and race nutrition. Mike Mandel has been a professional hypnotist since 1975. He’s traveled the world doing thousands of hypnosis shows. He’s a forensic hypnotist who worked with the police on major crimes. These days he loves teaching hypnosis in our Toronto classroom, conferences around the world and especially online at the Mike Mandel Hypnosis Academy. Chris Thompson got hooked on this stuff by watching Mike perform hypnosis at his University. He eventually studied with Mike and they became best friends. Together, they launched this online academy in 2013. In our conversation I seek to understand from Mike and Chris, what is hypnosis, how does it work and are certain people more or less susceptible to being hypnotized. We talk about the clinical and therapeutic applications of hypnosis and the efficacy of the results. We talk about applications for athletes and sport performance. I seek to understand whether or not you can hypnotize an athlete to compete and perform at a high level. Finally, we talk about mastering hypnosis and the steps one would need to take to learn hypnosis abilities. Nick B. Tiller Ph.D. is a senior researcher in exercise physiology at Harbor-UCLA and author of The Skeptic's Guide to Sports Science which was named one of Book Authority's "Best sports science books of all time". Tiller is a columnist at Skeptical Inquirer magazine, a columnist at Ultra-Running Magazine, and associate editor at the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism. For over a decade, Tiller has been scrutinizing the commercial health and wellness industry through the critical lens of scientific skepticism. Nick is a renowned authority on the physiology and pathophysiology of ultra-endurance exercise. Nick ran his first marathon in 2001 at the age of 18 years and contested Ironman triathlon (Frankfurt; European Championships) in 2009. In 2010, he ran his first ultramarathon. Since then, Nick has contested some of the world's toughest endurance races including the Marathon Des Sables (Sahara Desert) and several 100-mile trail races. In recent years, Nick has unified his personal passion for ultra with his professional work in physiology, contributing numerous original research and review papers to premier exercise science journals. In addition to peer-reviewed research, Tiller contributes articles to mainstream outlets, and writes a monthly column in Ultra-Running Magazine. We have a conversation about his many of the topics that’s in his book The Skeptic’s Guide to Sports Science, Confronting Myths of the Health and Fitness Industry. Professor Tiller discusses the placebo effect and breaks it down for the listener. We discuss the common “placebo effect is still an effect so what’s the big deal” response. We also talk about the potential downsides to placebo effect particularly with unproven methods. We have a conversation about acupuncture, cupping and dry needling, and why we’ve seen motivation of such alternative medicine among athletes and whether or not there is any demonstrated efficacy of such methods beyond placebo. We talk about nutrition and in particular fad diets and supplements driven by heuristics and biases that have led populations to seek quick fixes for weight loss under an increasing obesity epidemic. We discuss the efficacy of a myriad of athlete recovery protocols including, cold immersion, cryotherapy, massage or robot massage, compression garments and whether or not there is anything that has been scientifically demonstrated to meaningfully expedite performance or recovery. Finally, we talk about logical fallacies that are typically made by people and Professor Tiller discusses his response to such fallacies. A conversation with Carol Irwin PhD, one of the key researchers for more than a decade around the issue of swimming competence among populations. We discuss her research teams latest qualitative report “Factors impacting Swim participation and Competence,” which aims to understand why we see lower swimming proficiency rates in underserved populations. Dr. Irwin has PhD in Curriculum and Instruction/Health Education and an MA Sport Pedagogy. She is an associate professor of physical education, teacher education in the College of Health Sciences at the University of Memphis. Dr. Irwin has been the Principal Investigator for several USA Swimming research studies, including “Constraints Impacting Minority Swimming Participation.” This nation-wide study was the first research to determine minority youth swimming ability, and to dig deeper to explore possible reasons why these underserved populations drown at such high rates. She has also taken action to solve the problem by becoming research chair of Splash mid-south, a community-based program that supports diversity in swimming as well as decreasing drowning rates. Dr. Irwin discusses her background and what drove her and the other members of the research team to prioritize study of this phenomenon. She discusses the research methodology, of the May 2020 qualitative report, how it built off previous work, and some of the limitations. We review the key findings of the report including the insights that allow understanding about why we lower swimming competency in underserved populations and in what direction are the numbers moving. Finally, Dr. Irwin provides insight into potential solutions. A conversation with Tammy Hanson the elite education manager with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). A podcast that will be very informative to listeners that seek to understand the core pillars of fairness in sport through the lenses of anti-doping. We talk about the history of USADA, the core pillars that it is built upon, how USADA defines fairness and the impact to sport since the emergence of USADA. We discuss the list of prohibited substances (banned substances) and how the list is determined and periodically reviewed. In this time-box we touch on questions about marijuana and its inclusion on the prohibited substances list. We also discuss the difference between prohibited substances and over-the-counter products and ergogenic aids. We talk about the scheduled and random testing protocols, processes, and procedures USADA employs to ensure compliance in athletes. We touch on age-group/amateur athletes and whether they can be subject to testing like professional athletes. We review what is a therapeutic use exemption (TUE), the criterion for a TUE and how an athlete might request it and when it may get approved or denied. Keri Serota has a master’s degree in kinesiology, and she is a US triathlon certified coach and a member of the USAT board of directors. She’s also the co-founder of Dare2Tri. Dare2tri is a nonprofit organization with the mission to enhance the lives of individuals with physical disabilities and visual impairments by building confidence, community, health and wellness through swimming, biking, and running. Dare2Tri has encouraged recreation, racing, and competition in this trifecta of sports, while also cultivating a sense of community for all athletes, who are not labeled by physical ability, but rather their determination and will to succeed. Dare2Tri empowers athletes of all ability levels from beginner to elite to be physically active, engaged with their community, and set and reach goals. We transform lives by boosting individuals’ self-esteem, confidence, and self-worth. We have a conversation about Keri’s journey from athlete to being an expert on the training and coaching of athletes with disabilities and being co-founder of Dare2Tri. We talk about some of the aspects of training and coaching athletes with disabilities and some of the things athletes and coaches have to consider. We have a conversation about the classifications that exist in the arena of athletes with disabilities and Paralympics and the complicated math of trying to ensure fairness and equity. We talk about the Paralympics and some of the big stories out of Tokyo. Finally we talk about steps people, athletes and coaches can take to get involved and inspiring more resources for athletes with disabilities. A conversation with Evolutionary Anthropologist Dr. Herman Pontzer, Phd. He received his PhD from Harvard University now an associate professor of Evolutionary Anthropology at Duke University. He is the author of a new book Burn: New Research Blows the Lid Off How We Really Burn Calories, Lose Weight, and Stay Healthy. We have a conversation about what an evolutionary anthropologist does. We discuss his book Burn and the cost of energy, the variables of daily energy expenditure, metabolism and what is a “calorie” in scientific terms. We touch on the 3,500 caloric deficit rule to lose 1 pound and what we should understand about the metric. We talk about the diet and activity of early hominins, the differences between humans and the other great apes, and the downside of living in our evolved bodies in modern times including tribalism, obesity and cardio-metabolic disease. We talk about Dr. Pontzer’s research after studying a modern-day hunter gatherer community called the Hadza in Tanzania and how the conclusions of the research lead to the concept of constrained total daily energy expenditure. Dr. Ponzer describes the implications for those with weight loss goals.
