This exclusive BCfm podcast was commissioned as part of Resourcing Racial Justice (RRJ) reflections, learning and evaluation. The four people charged with criminal damage for toppling the statue of enslaver Edward Colston were recently found not guilty by a jury. It was a historic case which made headlines the world over. But here in this podcast, we talk about an aspect of the trial that you will not hear about in the news: love. Using archive news footage, interviews with campaigners, and scenes from the courtroom, presenter Priyanka Raval - who was there for the duration of the trial - looks at the remarkable role of love, compassion, and allyship in this case. We ask, was this a win for racial justice? And what role does love play in our efforts for social justice? Presented and Written by Priyanka Raval Produced by Marcus Smith and Tin Hinson…

FAMILY is the work of local people, freshly trained in podcasting by BCfm, using old archival audio digitised by UOSH digitised. The podcasters tell special stories inspired by the oral history from two collections held at Bristol Libraries - ‘A Town in the West Country’ and ‘Bristol People’s Oral History Project’. Under the guidance of BCfm’s Pat Hart, local people were recruited and trained to create podcasts. Using the oral histories as their starting point, participants enhanced them with research and commentary, reflecting on what these voices are telling us. Moving, funny and thoughtful by turns, they have been compiled into this one hour audio piece. The ‘A Town in the West Country’ collection was recorded in 1988, capturing memories of Bristolians reminiscing about wartime Bristol. The recordings were part of research for a play of the same name that was performed at the Bristol Old Vic. The ‘Bristol People’s Oral History Project’ collection was recorded by Stephen Humphries in the late 1970s. Steve was researching recollections of childhood and youth in the first three decades of the 1900s. The project interviewed about 200 working class people from Bristol and the West Country who were born between 1890 and 1925. Both collections are now available in digital format thanks to UOSH based at Bristol Archives. Unlocking Our Sound Heritage is a national project led by the British Library and supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.…

Phoenix from the Airwaves The Untold In a community centre in inner city Bristol, next to the nursery, and the café and the hall for local meet-ups and yoga, sits a very special place. The BCfm – Bristol Community FM – radio station. From their studio next to Easton community centre’s reception, 204 volunteer radio presenters broadcast to the city of Bristol and beyond. Dezzi Rankin (the resident Sunday morning reggae host), Shout Out (LGBTQ+), Silver Sound (for the older listener), Mid-Week Sports bar, Real Women – they’re all here. Pat Hart has been the station manager for ten years – and also the station’s breakfast presenter. “I don’t think there’s a single part of life in Bristol we don’t represent.” It is always a struggle, but with grants drying up, the station has found itself living more and more of a hand to mouth existence. At the beginning of 2019 he found himself asking the council for more support, but nothing could prepare him for what was around the corner. “If I’d have had a crystal ball, I might have run away at the beginning of 2019.” One fateful day in August at 11am, Tony Johnson launched his 50th Anniversary of the Moon landings special with Telstar. “I plugged my MP3 stick into the usual slot… and then I smelt something strange. Looked to my left, and saw the smoke coming from somewhere behind the desk.” He did his next link, alerted the receptionist to the need for a fire engine, and then as the studio filled with acrid smoke, he queued up an hour’s worth of music. “The radio host’s worst nightmare is dead air.” Pat arrived to find the studio completely destroyed, the insurance documents illegible from fire damage, and his thoughts turned to the listeners. The longer the station is off air, the more perilous their situation becomes. Can Pat get the station back on air - and fast? Produced by Polly Weston for BBCR4…
