A conversation with Michael Wardian ultra-marathon runner and holder of multiple marathon world records.
He’s an ultra-marathoner and also an endurance coach that has racked up a pretty phenomenal record of marathon and ultra-marathon finishes and records. He’s completed double digit 100 mile + ultra-marathons, and is the world record holder for the World Marathon Challenge where he ran 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days at an average time of 2:45:57.
We talk about his origin story. We spend the lion share of the time talking about running, nutrition and training science and attempt to deconstruct how it is that he’s able to perform the way he does.
We talk about where he’s at now in life and some of the next big running endeavors.
Michael gives his running advice to non-runners and experienced runners allowing runners of all abilities to get something valuable out of the podcast.

She is a Professor at Mid Sweden University with a broad research agenda in the female athlete, and menstruation effects on training, and racing performance. She is a coach and 2x age group world champion in triathlon. Professor McGawley engages in a science centered conversation around the protected women’s category in sport and explanation and implications of athletes with DSD. We talk about the paper she co-authored with other scientists and unpacks the evidence and critique of the IOC’s 2021 framework aimed at providing governing bodies with guidelines for fairness and inclusion. Professor McGawley gives her dissemination of a common rebuttal regarding performance advantage (i.e., Phelps advantages). Finally, Professor McGawley provides listeners with the key considerations that athletes/coaches should be aware of regarding the menstrual cycle, and the impact on female athlete training, racing and performance. Tanya Halliday, PhD, RD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health, Kinesiology, and Recreation at the University of Utah. Her research focuses on appetite and food-intake regulation in response to lifestyle interventions such as dietary restriction and exercise. Currently, she is investigating how type of exercise (e.g., aerobic vs resistance) influences hormonal and behavior indices of appetite regulation, and mechanisms underlying response variation in body mass regulation with exercise. Another current area of research focus is on development of effective weight loss maintenance strategies. Dr. Halliday is also examining how sex as a biological variable, may influence the appetitive responses to energy deficits elicited through both increased exercise energy expenditure and caloric restriction. She received her PhD in Clinical Physiology and Metabolism from Virginia Tech in 2016, where her research focused on exercise and dietary interventions for the prevention and treatment of obesity and related cardiometabolic conditions. She is also a Registered Dietitian, having completed her BS in Dietetics in 2010 at the University of Wyoming, and her Dietetic Internship through the University of Houston in 2011. We have a conversation about the change in obesity rates over the last 50-60 years and what the current epidemiology states regarding the impact on populations and general health. We discuss traditional energy balance teachings and whether a “calorie is a calorie” as it relates to weight loss. Professor Halliday discusses GLP-1 medications, what problems they meant to solve and for which candidates and explains the side effects. We talk about the efficacy of exercise for improved health and weight loss and whether wearable technology can assist health outcomes. Prof Jones has authored more than 350 original research and review articles (>38K citations) and is co-Editor of three books. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences, the European College of Sport Science, and the Physiological Society. He's been an advisor and consultant to the Breaking 2 and INEOS projects with Eluid Kipchoge and professional endurance athletes including Paula Radcliff. Professor Jones gives his understanding of the evidence of the performance effect of the so called “super shoes” and whether they explain the recent pro marathon runner excess performance and if so, by how much. Amateur marathon runners may find interesting our exchange about the Boston Marathon and how it is getting harder to get into, and what amateur marathoners must do to enhance performance in order to qualify and get into the Boston Marathon today. Professor Jones gives his perspective on the popularized notion that when it comes to marathon training “volume is king” and if not, what would be the alternative. We talk about distance runners that are getting older, and how Professor Jones recommends changing training, if at all, for those looking to remain competitive. Finally, we talk about science and evidence-based nutrition protocol throughout the training cycle and pre-race and race nutrition. Mike Mandel has been a professional hypnotist since 1975. He’s traveled the world doing thousands of hypnosis shows. He’s a forensic hypnotist who worked with the police on major crimes. These days he loves teaching hypnosis in our Toronto classroom, conferences around the world and especially online at the Mike Mandel Hypnosis Academy. Chris Thompson got hooked on this stuff by watching Mike perform hypnosis at his University. He eventually studied with Mike and they became best friends. Together, they launched this online academy in 2013. In our conversation I seek to understand from Mike and Chris, what is hypnosis, how does it work and are certain people more or less susceptible to being hypnotized. We talk about the clinical and therapeutic applications of hypnosis and the efficacy of the results. We talk about applications for athletes and sport performance. I seek to understand whether or not you can hypnotize an athlete to compete and perform at a high level. Finally, we talk about mastering hypnosis and the steps one would need to take to learn hypnosis abilities. Susan Sotir, PhD coaches with Breakthrough Performance Coaching , she has a PhD in Sport Physiology and Exercise Psychology and is an assistant professor at Springfield College. Susan brings over 25 years of experience in sport coaching. She has worked with endurance athletes of all levels from recreation to competitive to professional athletes. She is a Level III triathlon coach with USA triathlon. Susan was a DIII swimmer at Tufts University and her first triathlon was in 1989. Since then, she has raced triathlons from sprint to IRONMAN distances, some years racing near the front. She is a certified strength and conditioning coach (NSCA-CSCS), and is a Precision Nutrition Certified Coach. In addition to sport coaching, Susan serves as a consultant for elite athletes and coaches developing and integrating mental skills into sport practice and performance. We have a conversation about psychological factors that typically impact athlete performance, and some of the mental skill building approaches she employs to help athletes. We talk about the heightened awareness on providing tailored training and racing protocols for female athletes and considerations she explores with female athletes. (e.g., 28-day cycle, menstruation, contraception implications, Female Athlete Triad, RED-S, menopause, and perimenopause). Dr. Sotir weighs in on the question of sports physiology research being conducted on mostly men and the resulting impact on the solutions for women. Dr. Sotir gives her advice on improving swimming skills for triathletes, pool swimmers and open water swimmers and some of the tactics and strategies she uses with athletes. Finally, we talk about strength, nutrition, and body composition and how she approaches the conversation with athletes, and what she recommends, if anything, through the training cycle.
