Unlike other board games such as Mafia or Werewolf, Among Us divides players into two teams: crew members and Impostors. Depending on the rules, the game pitts a number of innocent crew members against one or two secret Impostors and throws them into a group of up to 10 players. Since the game depends on social deduction and deception, teamwork is an important tool with which players can win at any time.

An Impostor is a player who wins by killing the majority of Crewmates, and they have to do it before all tasks are completed.
