Today Yuliana is joined by Wati Grossman, a fashion designer who gave up a law career to pursue her passion and love for fashion, and who now has over 30 years experience as a fashion professional in New York and San Francisco. In addition to her own design pursuits, Wati provides mentoring and consulting to fashion-related start-ups, garment designers and manufacturers in Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area, and is also a passionate supporter of the visual arts.

The conversation begins with Wati delving into the event that redirected the course of her life - her decision to change her career - and then she talks about her journey in the fashion industry and how her legal background helped her in her new career. Throughout the episode, Wati discusses sustainability in the fashion industry, a subject that contradicts what fashion is about, and she tells us to consume less, repurpose more and share as much as we can. The episode rounds off with Wati talking about the one song that resonates with her life- a song about surviving.

Episode Highlights:

- The event that redirected Wati's life

- Walking away from the legal profession

- Forging a new path in a new country

- Wati's journey in the fashion industry

- A safe way to start what you love doing

- How having a legal education helped Wati in her new career

- Sustainability in the fashion industry

- What is a capsule wardrobe?

- Wati’s projection of herself as a fashion designer in 5 years

- Monitoring what we consume.

- The song that describe Wati’s life

Quotes:

“I had decided that I was just going to reinvent myself.”

“There was a huge collective gasp from my larger family for choosing a non-traditional career path. ”

“It certainly is a process and you do have to start from scratch, you have to find new friends, you have to be resilient, and there's a lot of loneliness involved, obviously. Then you find your tribe and it just goes from there.”

“Making that change from being a lawyer to pursuing fashion design had a huge impact on me philosophically, not just career-wise.”

“I did pursue my dream of studying fashion design, worked in the fashion industry, started my own line and my own brand.”

“You need to be doing something you love.”

“In this day and age, being an artist is being an activist for social change.”

“The fashion industry is the biggest offender in terms of pollution after the oil industry. There is just so much that needs to be done.”

“There is something wrong when a garment, whether it be a T-shirt or a dress, costs the same as a sandwich.”

“We just need less, we need to pass on, we need to recycle and share with our sisters.”

“It was definitely this idea that no matter what you throw at me, I'm going to make the best of things.”
