In the third week of our Little Mermaid Month, we read The Seafarer's Kiss by Julia Ember! This 2017 novel tells the story of Ersel, a mermaid living in frozen seas far north, who becomes entangled in the tricky dealings of the Norse god Loki. Among other things, we discuss the question of how much of a classic story must remain intact for a new version to still be a retelling, not just as it relates to this novel but also as it relates to an outlandish statement that the musical Grease is a retelling of The Little Mermaid!
