A black man in colorful fabrics, furs, feathers, chains and a mask, Bou Saadia is a figure seen dancing in processions and in the rites and rituals of the Stambeli, Diwane and Gnawa music of North Africa. According to the legend, he was originally from the south of the Sahara. When his daughter, Saadia, was abducted by slave traders, he went to North Africa to search for her. This podcast tells his story.

In "Myths”, the first of the #Mudawanat podcast series, we look into urban myths through personal anecdotes, contemporary social experiences and cultural productions and practices.

Mudawanat is a living archive of contributions that document the contemporary culture scene in the Arab region.

The Mudawanat project is co-produced by Culture Resource and the British Council. The content of this podcast does not necessarily express the views or ideas of either organization.

Production and broadcasting for this project is supervised by Sowt.

Mudawanat, which consists of two series, “Myths” and “Alternatives,” is the pilot product resulting from the work of participants in the first round of the Mudawanat program. Brought together in Tunisia in January 2020, they are a group of researchers, writers, journalists and artists involved in arts and culture in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Algeria, Egypt and Palestine. You will get to know all of them in turn.
